For Van Der Sloot, the End
Why do young murder suspects act like reality-TV stars rather than murder suspects?

<snipped>
If there are rules of behavior for people suspected of heinous crimes, no one told Joran van der Sloot. The 22-year-old Dutchman was arrested Thursday in Chile in connection with the murder of a girl in Peru. But he’d been drawing plenty of attention to himself even before that: he was arrested and released twice in connection with the 2005 disappearance of Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway while she was on a school trip to Aruba. A failure by authorities to find the body may have kept him from being convicted, but it didn’t keep his mouth shut: van der Sloot, the last person to be seen with Holloway, has told various stories about that night, and he was even caught by hidden camera confessing to having dumped her at sea. So the last thing van der Sloot should have had in his Peru hotel is the corpse of another young woman.

He’s not alone. Stories like van der Sloot’s are increasingly common among the current post-teen generation that grew up on reality television and virtual realism. Think of suspected child-killer Casey Anthony and the study-abroad student-murderer Amanda Knox, for instance. Kids in big trouble share the same sense of life without consequences—and an obvious loss of their moral compass—when it comes to the gravity of the accusations against them. It’s as if they’ve been conditioned to believe that life can simply be reset like a video game if things start to go bad. Or maybe that fame—even infamy—is so intoxicating that they just want more.

Certainly no one is more famous as an irreverent celebrity suspect than Seattle native Amanda Knox, who is serving a 26-year sentence for the sexual assault and murder of her British roommate, Meredith Kercher, in Perugia, Italy.

With Anthony and Knox, their actions greatly affected how people—and, inevitably, juries—perceived their guilt.

Anthony Motion On Jail Visits Denied
Judge Rules Jail Visits Won't Be Kept Confidential

POSTED: 11:08 am EDT June 8, 2010
UPDATED: 3:22 pm EDT June 8, 2010
<snipped>
Chief Judge Belvin Perry rejected a motion on Tuesday to keep Casey Anthony's jail visit records confidential.

Prosecutors said confidentiality would amount to special treatment for Anthony, and if the motion were granted, dozens of other inmates would be entitled to the same treatment.

Meanwhile, a hearing in the Anthony case slated for June 17 was rescheduled to July 15 at 2 p.m. A status conference remains scheduled for June 21, but Anthony is not expected to attend.

Judge Perry has ruled that the list of her visitors at the Orange County jail won't be kept secret. Perry filed his ruling Monday.

The judge also denied two other motions, one to compel forensic discovery and the other to strike state's notice of aggravating circumstances.

Judge denies 3 motions from Casey Anthony
5:29 p.m. EDT, June 8, 2010
<snipped>
In orders signed on Tuesday, Perry:
•Denied Anthony's request that prosecutors turn over a secretly recorded tape made by Joe Jordan while he was interviewed by a defense investigator in October.
• Denied a new request to produce a transcript of George Anthony's grand jury testimony from October 2008. "Parties seeking disclosure must make a strong showing of a particularized need in order to outweigh the public interests in the secrecy of the grand jury proceeding," Perry stated in his ruling. "Reported inconsistencies as to testimony is not enough."
•Granted Anthony's motion that the defense team not be required to pay up front the costs of compiling and copying some 5,000 tips collected by the Orange County Sheriff's Office.
•Granted Anthony's motion that the defense team not be required to pay up front the costs of compiling and copying some 5,000 tips collected by the Orange County Sheriff's Office. Instead, Perry said, the defense team can submit an invoice from the Sheriff's Office to the Justice Administrative Commission for direct payment.

Perry also assigned an updated schedule for the case's progress, rescheduling a June 17 hearing for July 15. The next status hearing in the case is June 21.

In earlier orders signed on Monday, Perry:
•Ruled that Anthony's wish to keep confidential her visitors at the Orange County Jail "in a high profile case does not qualify as a lawful exemption." Further, there is no exemption in state law that allows the court the seal such public records.
•Declined to strike prosecutors' filing of its notice of aggravating circumstances — reasons why it will seek the death penalty. Anthony's attorneys had argued that the state "merely filed a list of factors on which it may rely, failed to serve the defense with notice, and failed to provide any indication of the evidence it would use to prove the existence of those factors.
•And ruled that prosecutors do not have to provide some forensic evidence from Oak Ridge Laboratories. However, Perry said the defense could re-file a similar motion as long as it has a narrower focus.

On Monday, Perry “denied a defense request to seal the names of people who visit Anthony at the Orange County Jail,” anchor Lisa Bell reported this morning. “Her lawyers do not want prosecutors to know which experts are visiting their client.”

Overall, Monday wasn’t a good for the defense. Bell added, “The judge also shot down other motions from the defense regarding the death penalty and forensic evidence.”

Casey Anthony case: Prosecutors argue jury should hear 911 calls
11:00 p.m. EDT, June 9, 2010
<snipped>
Prosecutors in the Casey Anthony case filed a document Wednesday laying out arguments for letting jurors hear 911 calls made at the very start of the child murder case in July 2008.

Anthony's legal team has argued that dozens of statements made by her friends and family amount to hearsay and should be kept out at her trial scheduled for next year.

But in Monday's nine-page filing, Assistant State Attorney Linda Drane Burdick argues that the 911 calls made by Cindy Anthony, the defendant's mother, should be heard. The prosecutor contends that the calls help show the progression of stories Casey Anthony told to explain the disappearance of her daughter Caylee Marie.

911 Calls As Evidence Against Casey?
Thursday, June 10, 2010 9:52:44 AM
<snipped>
Just days after Judge Belvin Perry denied a series of motions filed by the defense, Casey and her attorneys face the possibility that more incriminating material could be allowed in her murder trial.

It’s just the latest blow to Casey’s defense as they try to keep what they said they consider hearsay out of court.

Prosecutors Wednesday filed documents laying out their arguments for why the jury should be able to hear 911 calls made by Casey’s mother, Cindy Anthony, in July 2008.

Prosecutors Want Jury To Hear Anthony 911 Call
Call Could Be Key Piece Of Evidence

POSTED: 5:24 am EDT June 10, 2010
UPDATED: 12:05 pm EDT June 10, 2010

Prosecutors say a 911 call made by Cindy Anthony on July 15, 2008, will show a jury the web of stories Casey Anthony told about the disappearance of her daughter.

A frantic Cindy Anthony is heard on the 911 call saying, "It smells like there's a dead body in the damn car." Prosecutors want the call heard in court and said the calls could be a key piece of evidence in Anthony's trial.

Anthony's defense team has also filed documents claiming that the 911 call, and other evidence, should not be used during the trial. Defense attorney's said the call is heresy and should not be heard in court.

Casey Anthony: Prosecutors want jury to hear 911 calls; will that happen?

“Prosecutors argue that those tapes are critical in the time line of events in the case,” Janelle Jordan of Central Florida News 13 said. “But the defense argues that they should just be considered hearsay.”

Jordan observed that listeners “can certainly tell the difference in tone of voice and intensity as Cindy Anthony continues to make those calls.”

WESH’s Wilson reported, “Prosecutors say that the 911 calls are vital to their case while Casey’s defense team says it’s all hearsay, so let’s exclude them.”

Casey Anthony: What do 911 calls say about Casey Anthony?
posted by halboedeker on June, 10 2010 12:36 PM
<snipped>
“Prosecutors say they help show the progression of stories that Casey Anthony told to explain the disappearance of her daughter Caylee,” WFTV-Channel 9 anchor Vanessa Echols said at noon today.

“The state wants to use it [the calls] at trial,” WKMG-Channel 6 anchor Laura Diaz said. “The defense wants it tossed out. Their argument is that jurors are only allowed to hear testimony under oath. But in papers filed late last night, prosecutors point out statements made by someone under stress can be allowed.”

WKMG played Casey Anthony telling a 911 dispatcher that a nanny had taken the toddler. Diaz quoted prosecutors’ contention that the calls “demonstrate the defendant’s lies about the fate of her daughter” and “demonstrate consciousness of guilt.”

Casey Anthony: Will jury hear 911 calls?
June 10, 2010 2:03 PM

The calls were placed on July 15, 2008 when Cindy Anthony finally located her daughter, Casey, and found out her granddaughter was missing.

"There's something wrong," Cindy Anthony said in the call. "I found my daughter's car today, and it smells like there's been a dead body in the car."

The defense argues the calls are hear-say, but a motion filed Wednesday by prosecutors says they can be used to show Casey made up the nanny kidnapping story.

"She's been my nanny for a year and a half, almost two years," Casey says to the operator.

Prosecutors want Anthony 911 calls to be heard

Could 911 calls placed by Cindy Anthony in the early days of her granddaughter's disappearance be significant in the proving the guilt or innocence of Casey Anthony? Prosecutors in Casey Anthony's murder trial believe they are and have filed a motion that would allow jurors to hear three of the calls placed in July 2008.

The calls were all placed on July 15, approximately one month after Casey Anthony said her daughter was kidnapped by a babysitter. In the first call, Casey's mother, Cindy, calls to report that Casey has stolen a car and money and hints at first signs of Caylee's disappearance.

Prosecutors Want Cindy Anthony's 911 Call Heard

Prosecutors in the case against Casey Anthony say that 911 calls made by Casey’s mother, Cindy, should be heard during her murder trial. "There's something wrong. I found my daughter's car today and it smells like there's been a dead body in the damn car," Cindy Anthony said in the 911 call.

Prosecutors filed a motion Wednesday to include the calls, saying they help show the progression of stories Casey Anthony told to explain the disappearance of her daughter Caylee. But the defense team says the calls should be excluded because they're "testimonial."

Chief Judge Belvin Perry says he will decide on the issue later on in the case.

WHAT'S NEXT IN THE CASE?
The hearing originally scheduled for June 17 has been rescheduled for July 15 at 2:00pm. Also, a status hearing is scheduled for June 21 at 1:30pm. Casey will not be attending the status hearing.

Casey Anthony defense again argues against death penalty aggravators
6:35 p.m. EDT, June 11, 2010
<snipped>
Attorneys for Casey Anthony submitted three new arguments against reasons that would be used to secure a death sentence in the child murder case.

One speaks about a capital felony — the murder — being committed while Anthony engaged in another felony, in this case aggravated child abuse. The defense argues that when examining if an aggravator might be overbroad, "the Court looks to whether there is a risk that the statute will result in capricious or arbitrary imposition of death."

The second circumstance questions whether 2-year-old Caylee Marie Anthony's death "especially heinous, atrocious or cruel," as defined in Florida's death penalty statute. The defense says prosecutors have not cited case law that "substantively address the constitutionality of the aggravator itself."

The third aggravator involves the capital felony, whether it was a homicide and "committed in a cold, calculated and premeditated manner without any pretense of moral or legal justification," as defined in the statute. The defense cites case law brought up in an earlier filing and argues that the cases "illustrate that the constitutionality of the cold, calculated and premeditated aggravator has not been resolved – as the state argues…"
