First a slip-up, then down to business

IT STARTED with a slip-up. Gerard Robert Baden-Clay, dramatically taking the stand in his own murder trial, was asked a simple question.

How long had he been married to his wife Allison, the woman he is accused of murdering?

“We would have been coming up to our 14th wedding anniversary,’’ he said, before realising he was a year off.

“Sorry, it would have been coming up to our 15th,’’ he corrected, cutting off his defence barrister, Michael Byrne QC.

Mr Byrne was already in the middle of his next question, which happened to be his biggest: “Mr Baden-Clay, did you kill … ?’’

Gerard’s misstep forced Mr Byrne to repeat the question. This time, Gerard answered confidently: “No I did not”.

If it was nerves, they seemed to evaporate the longer Gerard talked.

Gerard Baden-Clay's phone log shows early-morning charge

Rae Wilson | 25th Jun 2014 10:55 AM Updated: 1:19 PM

AS the Crown closed its case against Gerard Baden-Clay, it revealed the father of three's mobile phone was connected to a charging device in the early hours of the morning.

A list of admissions shows his phone was placed on charge at 1.48am on April 20, 2012, and removed from charge at 6.18am - something extracted from his phone's log.

Mr Baden-Clay has always maintained he went to bed about 10pm on April 19 because he was feeling sick.

He repeatedly told police he was a heavy sleeper and was not sure whether his wife Allison slept in the bed next to him.

Day 11: Gerard Baden-Clay will testify in his trial for murder of wife Allison

June 26, 2014 5:12PM

'DID you kill Allison?' 'No I did not'. Gerard Baden-Clay is in the witness box giving evidence about his marriage, business and illicit affairs in his defence at his trial in which he is accused of killing his wife Allison.

Baden-Clay says he did not dispose of her body or clean up afterwards. He said in his mind he did not have a relationship with his mistress Toni McHugh and that he was planning to spend the rest of his life with Allison. He did however get the number of years they were married wrong.

He also said he had "never" been scratched by his wife and said the marks on his cheek on April 20, 2012 were from shaving.

When asked whether he killed his wife, Baden-Clay said: No I did not".

THERE are tickets and ushers at the door. Lines that stretch and curve. Security to break up fights and altercations.

The trial of Gerard Robert Baden-Clay has captivated the state and is about to get more compelling.

For three weeks, the crowds have only grown at the Queen Elizabeth II Courts of Law building on George St in the Brisbane CBD.

And with Gerard to take the stand on Monday to continue giving evidence, the rush for seats is expected to reach a new peak.

Gerard Baden-Clay Trial Live Coverage: Day 12, Week 4

Date June 30, 2014 - 10:00AM

4:42pm Wrap: This afternoon ...

* Mr Baden-Clay demonstrated for the jury how he cut himself shaving on the morning he reported his wife missing, using a pink highlighter pen.

The court has previously heard from forensic experts who have said the injuries on Mr Baden-Clay's face were more consistent with fingernail scratches than cuts from a modern razor.

* The 43-year-old recounted his movements on April 19, 2012, telling the court he was bitten by a caterpillar while watching his children compete in a school cross-country carnival that day. He said an "itching scratch" spread over his chest.

* He fumbled, however, as he recalled the morning he reported his wife missing on April 20, 2012.

"I started getting the children ready for school and I think I texted Al," he said.

"Actually, I think I texted her before I had all the children up. And I tried calling more than I texted."

* Mr Baden-Clay also told the court he asked police how he could help search for his wife in the days after she disappeared but was told "in no uncertain terms" not to join the search.

Gerard Baden-Clay claims he planned to stay with his wife

GERARD Baden-Clay said he had no plans to leave his wife Allison for his mistress Toni McHugh despite confirming July 1 as the date in an email.

He told Brisbane Supreme Court he hoped that would make Ms McHugh leave him because of another broken promise.

July 1 was Allison's birthday.

"I don't honestly know where that (date) came from," he said.

I just gave her a date because we were in a face to face conversation.

"She wanted me to leave Allison.

"If we were speaking personally to one another I pretty much agreed to anything she asked to keep her happy.

"I was braver when we weren't face to face."

Gerard Baden-Clay trial: Accused murderer made life insurance inquiry one day after wife's body was found

Accused killer Gerard Baden-Clay says when he inquired about how to claim his wife's life insurance the day after her body was found on a Brisbane creek bank, he was just following his father's advice.

Giving evidence at his murder trial on what would have been his wife Allison's birthday, the 43-year-old former real estate agent was asked by his barrister whether he contacted insurers Asteron Life on May 1, 2012.

"That's correct. The day before, we had found Allison's body and we knew it had been confirmed it was her," Baden-Clay, becoming emotional, told Brisbane's Supreme Court.

"Dad told me that I really had an obligation to the insurers to let them know. That was why I made the call."
