Caitlin O’Brien had just won the fight of her life after successfully undergoing surgery to remove a brain tumour.

But the 31-year-old Melbourne nurse cheated death only to be killed less than five weeks later.

According to police, Ms O’Brien was found dead inside her Kooyong Road apartment at Gardenvale in the city’s southeast at about 7.30pm yesterday when police conducting a welfare check broke down her door.

Her boyfriend Shea Sturt, 32, was arrested a short time later and charged with her murder.

He fronted Melbourne Magistrates’ Court this morning less than 24 hours after the gruesome discovery.

This poor nurse, recovering after brain surgery has been murdered.
Hope this Creep's life, that committed the murder, is now ruined, with Justice and Karma, working swiftly.

Caitlin O'Brien, a tragic murder, and the excuses we keep accepting for men's violence.

Caitlin O'Brien and Shea Dylan Sturt met as teenagers at TAFE. But theirs was anything but a fairytale romance. Sturt began abusing Caitlin in 2008. Court documents reveal just some of the physical violence carried out against Caitlin included punching, kicking, throwing furniture, pulling hair, strangling and suffocating.

In one incident when Sturt became angry with Caitlin, he grabbed her by the hair, pulled her head onto his lap and punched her six to seven times to the back of the head. When his mother, who witnessed the attack, told him to stop, he said, “I should be able to hit whoever I want.”
