Australia - Girl, 17, left for dead at Lake Heights near Port Kembla, NSW

April-lee Gillen was victim of kidnap, not hit-and-run, Wollongong police say

A teenage girl who was found on a roadside with critical head injuries is believed to have been kidnapped but managed to jump from the car, police say.

April-lee Gillen was initially thought to have been the victim of a hit-and-run after residents found her lying unconscious on the roadside at Lake Heights, just south of Wollongong, on April 20.

But police now say she was dragged into a black BMW SUV by two men, after being approached by them on Northcliffe Drive about 12.20am.
April-lee Gillen is believed to have escaped from a car but suffered serious head injuries.

Police appeal following attempted kidnapping of teen - Warrawong

The footage shows a black BMW SUV driving in the area about the time of the incident which is believed to be from the local area.

“We’re looking for assistance to identify the occupants of the car to piece together what happened to April-Lee,” Detective Superintendant Wayne Starling, Lake Illawarra Local Area Commander, said.

“April-Lee’s parents have been told their daughter will take some time to recover from this incident. Her memory has suffered as part of her injuries. She cannot even recall going on a family holiday just prior to the incident”.

I just read this latest update myself. Have I missed something, or is this the first we are hearing about the kidnap attempt? If so, this is a very good example of police holding back certain information from the public - unless it's new information for them as well.

I don't think it's new to them, they would have had to suspect something to go looking for CCTV. Her FB message would also give them something to work with.

April-lee Gillen woke from coma after attempted abduction to find she was pregnant

She was taken to Wollongong Hospital where she spent two weeks in an induced coma. A section of her skull was removed to ease the pressure on her brain.

Police initially suspected that April-lee had been injured in a hit-and-run crash, but CCTV then emerged of a black BMW sports utility vehicle driving in the area, performing a sudden u-turn and driving back along Northcliffe Drive.

Acting Superintendent Andrew Koutsoufis said police now believed someone tried to abduct April-lee.
