The discovery of human remains in a Queensland state forest frequented by gold fossickers has sparked a police investigation.

The remains in Durikai State Forest, in the Scenic Rim region west of the Gold Coast, are being analysed by forensic officers.

Durikai State Forest, near Warwick, is partially open to gold fossickers.

Camping is prohibited and it has no facilities.

Investigations are continuing.

They probably are suspicious. If they were archaeological or something they would be scattered and not just out in the open like that, true?

I think if they were historical they would more likely be buried under layers that build up over many years.
You usually hear about ancient remains after some project that involves digging.
Though maybe after floods or mudslides some might be brought to the surface.

When they say not suspicious they usually mean that the person took their own life.

Yes, 'not suspicious' is usually code for suicide. They seem to say 'natural causes' otherwise. Sometimes 'not being treated as suspicious' can go either way (suicide/natural causes). Depends on the circumstances and how they word it IMO

That said having not long since studied some archaeology at uni it is possible for remains of archaeological interest to come to the surface through various means. Erosion, weathering, animal activity, human activity, movements of water etc etc

Whatever the cause of death, someone will get their name back, and hopefully some family can get some closure

Often if they are certain it's suicide, the Lifeline and others similar websites will be listed below the article.

I am guessing if they've been there awhile it might be difficult to differentiate between a suicide and a homicide staged to look like one. Yes, I am getting carried away. You all are probably right that they think the remains are older, brought to the surface by water or similar.

I'm actually thinking they aren't older remains, but I could be wrong.

Behind a paywall but there's a snippet there, plus a photo

Bones may solve mystery of a sister ‘hopelessly lost’

A skull and bones found in a remote area of Queensland bush are most likely those of a Chinchilla woman Kerry Lynette Mackay, who disappeared with her dog 17 years ago after leaving her home and getting hopelessly lost on her way to Cunnamulla.

Kerry Lynette MACKAY

September 1st 2007 - Kerry's car has been located in the Durikai State Forest near Warwick, QLD. The remains of Kerry's pet birds were found inside the car but no trace of Kerry or her dog Grizzly have been located at this stage. Police are currently searching the forest near the car. The car had a flat tyre but was in otherwise good mechanical condition. No foul play is suggested.

Can anyone locate an update?

So far the only news I can find is from March this year.

The five unsolved crimes that haunt Warwick

It's behind a paywall but it says the bones found have been sent off for DNA testing, and that there's been no updates since
