A 12 -year-old girl in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales, suffered a potentially dangerous ectopic pregnancy after she was married to a 27-year-old in an Islamic ceremony last year, it's been revealed.

'The court papers revealed that after he was charged last year, an examination at Westmead Children's Hospital confirmed the child bride had "an ectopic pregnancy" and "miscarried".

She was examined after she complained of stomach pain.'

The girl, now 13, is in care. The man's been charged with persistent sexual abuse.

Disgusting. I don't know why the girl's parents don't get charged for allowing this marriage to happen. Surely it is child abuse ... and illegal. Removing the girl from their 'care' was good, but it is not enough imo.

"The pair had “married” in an Islamic ceremony in the girl’s living room in the Hunter Region after meeting at a mosque last January.

The court papers also said that the girl initially did not want to marry the man because he was too old but the man proceeded to send her a flood of text message since he first saw in a mosque in November 2013.

At first she did not reply to his dozens of texts messages but then began texting back."

Her 63-year-old father has just been jailed for at least six years for procuring his daughter for sex with a man. That man, now 27, has already been jailed for at least seven and a half years. Neither have been identified as that might identify the juvenile victim.

The court heard he viewed the marriage as a solution to the risk of his daughter committing sin and allowed the ceremony to go ahead, against the wishes of the child's mother.

She described his actions as a breach of trust.

Judge Sweeney said he "lacks insight into his offending".
