Australia - Shandee Blackburn, 23, murdered, Mackay, Qld, 9 Feb 2013

I am wondering if Shandee walked past the units on the corner and further up Boddington Street towards her house, was attacked and turned around and ran back the way she had come, maybe because she saw the taxi dropping someone off and was seeking help. That would place her back near the corner where she collapsed from her wounds.

I used to live a few blocks from where this young woman was murdered. So tragic.

So did I, Alioop! Norris St, just near the convenience store. This is such a disturbing story - initially read like a drunken fight but now seems like a Jill Meagher attack without the sexual component.

Flowers, notes and candles are being placed in tribute at the site where her body was found.

Shandee Blackburn's friends have pleaded with young women to avoid being out alone at night as they try to come to terms with her violent death last weekend

In a tragic twist, her best friend David Marsters said he and Shandee's family had only recently convinced her to move back home from the Gold Coast - where she had spent the past year - because they were concerned for her safety.

Mr Marsters begged people to avoid walking alone at night.

"I never used to think there was anything to worry about," he said. "No matter how safe you feel or how well you know a place, please don't travel alone after dark.

My gut reaction to this is first, that her killer knew her, somehow - either directly (someone in her life) or indirectly (someone who Shandee didn't know personally but who was familiar with her). Because.. 22 stab wounds. No mention of rape. All so quickly.. And so close to her home, like they were just waiting for her to turn that corner. Was someone upset she was leaving the country with her boyfriend/that she had a boyfriend in the first place? Mad at her about some issue at work? That she left the Gold Coast? Was there a reason her family and best friend were so concerned for her safety there?

22 stab wounds is overkill, a terrible rage. And someone was walking around pre-armed with a weapon.

Ofc, I could be wrong and it might have been sheer crime-of-opportunity for a psychopath or raving meth addict wandering about with a knife, but yeah. Gut says the killer knew her. In one way or another.

Whatever the case, I hope they catch her killer quickly. Poor Shandee, her family must be devastated.

Oh dear gods. That's a pretty good bet, then.

But was it just bad timing? Meth head's walking along with a knife. Shandee turns the corner... or were they waiting for her? Either way, Marley, thanks for that info. I'd say the local meth heads would be a swift port of call for the police.

Rumours were flying via text and facebook last night in Mackay. Police have commented on these rumours in this mornings newspaper.

Police say there is no drug rehab house in boddington street. A quick google search found there is.

Thank you. That was interesting.
Was Shandee found near the park?
Could it be a robbery gone bad?

Me too Radster though I was closer to the other end of Norris St. small world hey! I used to go and buy lollies as a kid from the de campo's at their shop

Flowers and candles are outside the unit block next to park. I presume this is where she was found. The park is just an area of mowed grass not really a park as such. The rehab house is on the other side of the road about a third of the way down the street from the where she was found. To me it was far too vicious and horrific to have been a robbery.

from the article linked above, quoting Det, Paul Elliot:

Q: Do you think this murder has created fear in the community among women?

A: I don't know whether this particular incident has or social media has. I'm not saying it has, but I could point the finger that if people were getting concerned about what's going on, then social media has got a lot to say for that.

Uh. Or they're getting cncerned because the in the last 12 months there's been a LOT of Australian women being murdered???

Just seemed like a bit of a dense comment, imo.

So we have a drug rehab down the street and an African gang (I tend to believe there is one, since the rehab was said to not exist either..).

I think 22 stab wounds in a blitz attack, no sex element, would normally indicate to me a personal edge to the crime. But if the perp was high on something.. drugs change things a lot. Amplify things warp motives. It all seems very sudden and savage, enraged.

But whoever it was, they did not dash home for the knife. They were carrying that weapon already. So it was someone who was already expecting to engage in violence at some stage. I bet they have a police record.

Evidence of attempted rape/abduction would change my whole thinking, here.

Thanks Mrs Plod. I got the viral text last night with the rumours referred to by police in the paper today. It was too ridiculous to believe.

Interview with Shandee's best friend:

http://www.news.com.au/national/sha...ted-many-a-heart/story-fndo4ckr-1226577458896

.."exciting and terrifying"..? Okay.

He also says she "didn't always pick the best boyfriends" though her present one is nice.

Was this the person who found Shandee on the ground and called out for help, "My friend.." etc? I wonder if he was at Shandee's house when it happened, or lives closeby.

My Moo and Take on the developments is that someone got angry at her that night at work. Whilst this person was travelling home in a taxi, probably the one seen in the video from Macca's, they(He) spotted her walking home. He asked the taxi to stop and jumped out. I had read their were 22 stab wounds(allegedly) How does this much brutality happen in the street? I imagine the person who was helping her had witnessed the attack and his car was the one seen behind the taxi.
Surely the taxi driver and this person who helped would have to have seen the perp?
I'm not sure about the guy walking in the drive thru, he doesn't look like he has a weapon(knife). One of the single guys in the ute's though may have a weapon in the car??
All MOO

Just horrible. Another poor woman murdered for simply walking at night.

I also think someone attacked her that knew her. Im reaching even to the point of premeditation...... So senseless.

THE mother and sister of murdered 23-year-old Shandee Blackburn are organising a Stop the Violence Walk for their "beautiful girl" tomorrow night.

Vicki and Shannah Blackburn are asking the community to join them and wear fluoro colours as they retrace Shandee's last movements on the night she was viciously murdered.

"We want to do this to give people the opportunity to show their support for Shandee," Vicki Blackburn said.

Q: Why do you think there has been so much public interest in this investigation?

DETECTIVE Acting Inspector Paul Elliot - A: If we go back to Jill Meagher that prompted a very big media response. She was a young female person who was walking home at an odd hour at night.

Every homicide is devastating. Everyone should be allowed to walk home.

For argument sake, you've got a young looking girl going home and you've got a middle aged man going home under exactly the same circumstances. They still should have the right to get home. It doesn't matter, they should have the right to do what they want.

Hundreds of Mackay residents have braved rain and gusts to march in the dark in memory of a murdered woman in north Queensland.
Police say 23-year-old Shandee Blackburn was stabbed to death last Saturday morning at East Mackay while walking home from work.
Streets in the area were blocked off on Friday night as about 300 people followed her final steps.

Specialist homicide detectives and local officers have established Operation Lima Zimzala to try and find those responsible for Ms Blackburn's murder.
Detective Acting Inspector Paul Elliot says they have received a number of leads from the public.

Crucial footage captured by Les Benson's CCTV camera may be the last time the 23-year-old Mackay woman is seen alive on her journey home - just a minute's walk from where she was killed in a stabbing frenzy.

Positioned about 150m from the murder scene, the footage is vital for police.

"They did see her walk past in the camera," Mr Benson, 43, told The Courier-Mail, from his Juliet St home. The camera, which holds recordings for a month, has a clear view of cars on the street and captured them as far as 100m away at a service station.

"There were a few cars and a lot of taxis," Mr Benson said.
