A QUIET Cooloola Cove street was the epicentre of frenzied speculation yesterday as police established a crime scene in the backyard of a fisherman's home which backs on to the Toolara Forest.

Police moved in on the Investigator Ave property early on Monday morning, erecting a marquee over a site in the unfenced backyard and maintaining an around-the-clock guard while they investigated a possible link with the murder of Gold Coast father Shaun Barker, whose skull was found nearby in April.

Man accuses police investigating Shaun Barker death of 'trashing' his house

A Tin Can Bay man has accused police of “trashing” his house, and says he has no idea why homicide detectives think his property is linked to the death of Gold Coast man Shaun Barker.

Police spent three days searching Stephen Armitage’s Cooloola Cove home this week, where they confiscated numerous items including computers and telephones.

Their search was linked to the death of Mr Barker, whose skull was found in the Tin Can Bay region by forestry workers on April 10.

Police left Mr Armitage's home on Thursday and did not lay any charges.

Mr Armitage said he believed someone provided a false tip-off to police because he and his family didn’t know Mr Barker.

“I’ve got nothing to hide, that’s the thing. That’s what I was telling the coppers,” he told Fairfax Media.

“I’m just pissed at the way they’ve trashed the house. I had to go and buy a new bed because they broke my bed when they were pulling it apart.

“They pulled everything apart in the house and they broke pots out the back.

Police declined to respond to Mr Armitage’s claims on Friday afternoon.

“As the investigation is ongoing it would not be appropriate to comment at this time,” Queensland Police said in a statement.

After investigators - including forensic teams - turned up at his Cooloola Cove home, Mr Armitage said rumours about he and Mr Barker were rife in the area.

“Apparently one of the rumours is he was my ex-wife’s boyfriend. The rumours are ********. I’d be buying the guy a beer if he was my ex-wife’s boyfriend, not burying him in a hole,” he said.

“Everyone in town is talking about me. I’ve done nothing wrong but you go somewhere and they look at you like you’re a criminal.”

Mr Barker was last seen by his family in mid-December and his skull was found in the Toolara State Forest five months later.

The 33-year-old’s Kia Rio hatchback was found in bushland on the Gold Coast last month.

It is indeed very strange. Do we know if he had any links to Tin Can Bay at all? Was the skull the only bones recovered?

The fact we've had remains found on Tin Can Bay in April and September last year, and now this, well... It's very disturbing. Tin Can Bay is just a small town. Something disturbing is going on there.....

Forestry workers made the discovery on April 10 in a remote location dotted with hoop pine plantations. A subsequent search uncovered other skeletal remains in a shallow pit about 95m from where the skull was found.

In relation to the dismembered torso which has not been identified....

Car clue in Cedar Pocket torso investigation

Police investigating a baffling case where a burnt human torso was found on the side of a rural Queensland road have identified a car seen in the area prior to the body being found.
Investigators believe a small orange, gold or bronze Nissan Micra hatchback was seen in the area prior to the discovery of the remains in Cedar Pocket, about 17 kilometres east of Gympie.
The car was seen by witnesses near the Tin Can Bay and Rainbow Beach areas on September 19 last year before the body was found at 6.27pm that evening.
The driver of the car has been described as a middle-aged Caucasian woman of medium build with blonde/brown hair.
The torso was found decapitated, with both arms removed below the elbow.
Detectives are yet to identify the victim, but DNA testing on the remains has revealed that the deceased is a man aged between 40 and 80 years old, who was likely to be more than 183 centimetres tall with a solid build.
Forensic examinations showed the man had been taking prescription medication named Quinine. Earlier this year, police said they were trying to contact GPs and pharmacies to find further clues on the man’s identity.
Police also found a burnt beach towel at the scene.
Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or at crimestoppers.com.au.

Detectives have arrested and charged three men in relation to the murder of Gold Coast man, Shaun Barker.

Mr Barker was reported missing by his family on January 14.

Following his disappearance, a joint investigation by the Gold Coast Criminal Investigation Branch and the Homicide Investigation Unit was launched, code named Operation Mike Dorado.

As a result of investigations, police determined the last positive sighting of Mr Barker was at a service station at Broadbeach on December 10.

A skull and other human remains located by forestry workers in the Toolara State Forest on 10 April 2014 were forensically examined and identified as that of Mr Barker.

Detectives today arrested three men – a 37-year-old Gold Coast man, and two men from Cooloolah Cove, aged 45 and 22.

They have been charged with murder, interfering with a corpse, torture and deprivation of liberty.

Good work QPS!!

October 04, 2014

Police today revealed Mr Barker was abducted from a Gold Coast service station, tortured and stuffed in an esky for ‘a lengthy period’ before he was murdered.

“It was a vicious and horrific death,” South Eastern Regional Crime Coordinator Detective Superintendent David Hutchinson said.

“He was held against his will before being killed. It was certainly one of the most horrific ones (murders) that have occurred in recent times.”

Supt Hutchinson said police believed more people had information about the murder but may have been frightened to come forward.

But now that the suspects had been arrested, it was hoped people with knowledge of the crime would assist police.

Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Police are seeking information about his white 1983 model 80 Series Toyota LandCruiser station wagon.

Detectives would like to hear from any members of the public who have information about the death of Mr Barker, or who have knowledge of the location or movements of a white 1983 model 80 Series Toyota Landcruiser station wagon, which at the time displayed Queensland registration 817SBZ.

Supe Hutchinson said today’s arrests have been the culmination of a comprehensive and protracted investigation which started as a simple missing person report.

“I would like to acknowledge the Crime and Corruption Commission’s (CCC) significant contribution to this investigation.

“They gathered crucial evidence through a series of coercive hearings from July 2014.

“The CCC’s hearings helped investigators to identify those involved in the alleged murder and the timeline of events leading up to it.”

Was the father armitage the bloke who had his house searched and kicked up a big stink to the media??
