Judges accused al-Shehab of “disturbing public order” and “destabilizing the social fabric" — claims stemming solely from her social media activity, according to an official charge sheet. They alleged al-Shehab followed and retweeted dissident accounts on Twitter and “transmitted false rumors.”

''Leeds University confirmed that al-Shehab was in her final year of doctoral studies at the medical school.

“We are deeply concerned to learn of this recent development in Salma’s case and we are seeking advice on whether there is anything we can do to support her," the university said''

The Guardian seems to suggest that the sisters' family in the Kingdom took back their bodies for burial.

The Guardian understands their bodies were repatriated sometime last week, and they were buried according to Islamic traditions.

While the family has remained publicly silent, it is also understood the women’s parents have remained in contact with New South Wales police.

Makes me wonder.. If it was suicide, why didn't they leave a note? Could just be simply saying where they wanted to be buried. Or could have said more.

Maybe it doesn’t apply to Islamic tradition, but usually only about 24% of suicide victims leave a note. (Younger people without a prior history of mental illness). Also, in some religious groups (Christians, but offshoots from the mainstream), if suicide, a note is a must.

Yes I do understand not every suicide leaves a note. I have no idea what the norm is for their cultural and religious background. If they were atheists, they wouldn’t care. In a way, I am positive that in this, they told the truth.

But in general, we don’t know them. The problem is, no one knew them, it seems.

I think their deaths were out of hopelessness, in one word.

Another issue. They were afraid of a man persecuting them, and they died. Does it mean that they were justified in their fears?

Or, regardless of all rational elements (asylum seekers, atheists, gay), could there be something irrational in them? Pure paranoia? Never treated, never paid attention to?

There is such a possibility. Controlling, angry, paranoid male relative, whom they were afraid of, and similar genetic in at least one girl - would it be possible?

And since they didn’t eat much, but seemed to survive on coffee and energy drinks- could plain eating disorder contribute into their demise? (Especially when they ran out of money?)

I am thinking there were several factors contributing to their deaths.

Granted, we know almost nothing about the sisters.
Do we even know their real names?

Another thing.
I read that Australia was locked for foreigners during Covid times.
So, if they were afraid of somebody, this person must have been living there.

Thank you for the link. I think I missed the info that says they had an active visa because there was talk on the thread of their 5 year one finishing ? I think anyway.

Just thought that was curious - if it was ending, I'd be leaning towards suicide..

I agree. My mom was so social that, visiting me in US, not speaking any English, sitting in some tiny square with her grandson, in several days, she found a couple of friends and an older admirer.

So I assume that by nature, the sisters were not very social. Otherwise, someone would be there. I suspect that they might have been different, personality-wise, but the less social one held the other one back.

If so, the fate was against them. 1) they were staying away from their community, that could understand them; 2) they were holding onto each other. This, alleging that one was straight and another, gay, was limiting both; 3) they look pretty on these photos, but given that they were so shy and stood out of the mainstream group, how easy would it be for them to find partners?

One thing I can not fathom, there is so much SM for atheists, how come they didn't find support there?

Were they supported financially by their family with the provision that they won't advertise being atheist or gay? Or did the support stop when they "came out"? If would be interesting to know how soon after they attended the gay party they ran out of money?

Could it be so that some PI was, indeed, following them, but his job was to see that they did not stray off the Islamic line?

I doubt they would be buried in a pauper's grave. When their own family wants to remain anonymous I question whether there is a 'somebody' who would come forward and care for their gravesites since graves are unmarked in SA and visiting is discouraged. The sisters were way beyond having normal burial ceremonies since they were deceased for a significant time before burial. I also doubt they would be buried with their heads facing Mecca as a final insult. MOO

Just an update on the apartment - I think it is now rented out. In fact, I drove past yesterday and saw a guy standing on the balcony checking out the views (of us cars on Canterbury Road). That corner balcony is so visible.
