'Australian national team cricketer Philip Hughes is in a 'critical' condition and has been put into an induced coma after being hit on the back of the head by a ball during a cricket game in Sydney.

The incident, which occurred at Sydney's SCG in a match between the states of South Australia and New South Wales, seemed relatively innocuous at first.

Hughes, who was attempting to play a hook shot off Sean Abbott's bowling, missed the ball before it hit him on the back of the head. The 25-year-old then regained his footing, propping himself up on his bat, before falling suddenly face-first to the ground.'

Team mates are reported to be in shock. I thought protective helmets were mandatory in professional cricket now, but I guess not?

There is a photo at the link above of him falling. The way he's collapsing, with arms limp and not able to protect himself at all, looks really bad. I wish Hughes all the best.

    Phillip Hughes’ freak accident explained

Sports doctor Dr Peter *Larkins told the Herald Sun the precise area Hughes was hit is particularly vulnerable.

“The brain comes right down to the upper part of your neck, so when you get a fracture with bleeding underneath it can cause enormous pressure to build up in the spinal canal and go up into the brain,” Larkins said.

“The danger to Phil Hughes would be a combination of bleeding into the upper part of the spinal cord from the fracture.”

Rest peacefully, Hughesy. A promising young life, gone too soon. :rose:

Thoughts going out to Sean Abbott, too ... worst day of his young life as well. :(

I can't shake a feeling of deep, deep sadness about this. I am not embarrassed to admit I have shed tears for this wonderful young man and his heartbroken family.

I grew up in Australia as a child and know just how much cricket means to that country. Heartbreaking.

Rest in peace, Phillip Hughes. :rose:

Cricket's something I know I should love (grew up playing, and still love, baseball), and would love if only I'd grown up with it. But. In spite of patient coaching and instruction via email from my friend Coxy in Melbourne, and in spite of the rules conveniently spelt out on the cover of the great Roy Harper's great LP, "When an Old Cricketer Leaves the Crease" -- argh. It just has not clicked, no matter how many matches I've tried to watch on TV. But the fault is mine, and not this glorious game's.

Rest in peace Phil Hughes. The consolation, I suppose, is that death came in the middle of doing a thing you loved.
