I wish I knew when in 1960 the skull was found. I couldn’t find anything about it’s discovery. There are only a couple of potential matches. For some reason William stands out to me and he somewhat resembles the sketch. The others not so much.

A bit young, but the location and circumstances caught my eye: Thomas Clyde O’Daniel – The Charley Project
William Durrell Patterson looks like a potential match, he looks like the John Doe sketch.

This article was printed in April 1961 after the skull was recovered but says it was originally discovered by two teen boys in October 1960.

The skull contained a bullet hole.

I can not find whether or not this man was ever located or returned to his new bride. Anyone else able to?

Reconstruction:

LaBoone, Ken "Human Bones Found North of Flagstaff," Arizona Daily Sun, July 8, 1980, pg 3.

"a hiker found human remains, a loaded pistol, old newspaper and coins under fallen trees."

"a man man said he found a human skull in the same area in 1962, and gave it to the Museum of Northern Arizona."

"the coins had none dated later then 1957"

LaBoone, Ken "Man's Death: Was It Murder or Was It Suicide?," Arizona Daily Sun, September 28, 1980, pg 1.

"[the pistol] was a pre-1900 vintage .32-caliber revolver carried in a Smith & Wesson pistol box...with four live rounds in the cylinder and more cartridges in a match box."

"the man walked with a gait...and had spinal arthritis and a hip deformity consistent with prolonged office work"

"his [clothes] included dress shoes, a belt, fragments of light-weight clothes."

"he was thought to have died in June or July 1957 near the Flagstaff Country Club [Kowboy Kountry Club]."

LaBoone, Ken "Museum Locates Skull Needed in County Probe," Arizona Daily Sun, October 28, 1980, pg 1.

"The skull has two bullet wounds - an entry wound near the right temple, and an exit wound high on the left side."

"The newspaper was a scrap from a 1957 edition of The Arizona Daily Sun."

"Deputy Releases Drawing of Dead Man Whose Bones Were Found Last Summer," Arizona Daily Sun, May 19, 1981, pg 14.

"The man had blond-gray hair"

"He probably wore dentures."

"[Even after locating the skull] detectives aren't sure if the wound was self-inflicted or if the man was a murder victim"

I tried to find out exactly where Kowboy Kountry Club was but I couldn't find an exact location, but it was located on Schultz Pass Road off of Highway 180. If I'm guessing it was about here. Kowboy Country Club was destroyed by fire on December 23, 1981.

But so I have questions: is the skull found in 1960 part of the remains found in 1980? Or was the sketch made with remains from 1980?

From what I can gather from the article the skull was found either 1961/1962 (articles give conflicting dates). When these remains were found in 1980 it was headless, the man who found the skull in 61/62 called in to the police and said that he found the skull in the same vicinity. The skull was connected back to this case then located at the Museum of Northern Arizona & the reconstruction was made from the skull from 61/62. It seems that LE operated under the thought that the skull was part of the remains from 1980's, I'm not sure if any DNA testing was done to confirm that considering the time period. However, the bullet wound in the skull from 61/62 matches the caliber of gun found with the remains from 1980 so I assume they do match up.

Hopefully that makes a bit more sense?

Thanks, now it's clear, I've already taken a look at the disappearances in Arizona but I haven't found compatible profiles, I'll check other states as soon as I have time.
