GUILTY AZ - Roman Barerras, 3, starved to death, Tucson, Dec 2013 *mother arrested*

Poor Roman.

In other cases, I've read that it's not uncommon for a family to single out one child for abuse or mistreatment. I don't think I've ever read why, though. Maybe there isn't a why.

It's actually not uncommon. Sad and I don't know how or why it is done. Friends I know, have custody of their two nephews because their parents did the same thing, "picking a child." They had four children and she was due any day with the fifth when the girl was murdered by the mother. What she did though was instructed her oldest to be the "ring leader," she was around 11 and her and the two boys (I believe around 9 and 7) were tasked with hitting and torturing the 5 year old. The 5 yr old was pretty much starved. The neighbors didn't even know was he existed and she never left the house, went to the doctor, or school. It was horrible what these children went through. The boys had never used silverware, didn't know their birth dates or age, and thought when you were given food it was a reward and you had to scrub the floor or windows, etc. the mom gave birth shortly before the child finally died, days actual. They tried to cover it up, but the husband came home, find her and called police. They are both locked up for a long time. So, long story short, it does happen.

The last time he was seen was 2012! CPS has failed so many kids here. Even with a computer glitch that didn't meet the standards for investigating child abuse for years, common sense should have taken over. How frustrating & heartbreaking it must have been for the workers too. grrrr I wonder why the workers wouldn't know that mom wasn't even to be around Roman?

Some of us were following Roman in Isabel thread & another missing girl from 1996 who lived in the area Roman was found, Karen Grajeda, age 7.

Cute little boy. So sad he was treated so bad & dad let it happen. I'm not sure why he wasn't charged with more. jmo

I literally just read a fictional story about this on Reddit. To see it happen in real life both sends shivers down my spine and breaks my heart once more for these precious angels.

Opening statements delivered in Barreras trial (with clip)

April 17, 2019

"...In her opening statements, prosecuting attorney Virginia Aspacher said Raquel Barreras treated Roman differently than her other children, keeping him isolated. Some of those siblings will be called to testify about that treatment during the trial.

The prosecution said Barreras “knowingly and intentionally” abused her child in a way that could lead to death and, in doing so, murdered him.

“It took Roman a long time to die. It took him a long time to starve to death and she watched him do it,” said Aspacher. “We cannot make these things better for Roman. What we can do is bring justice to Roman, the justice that Roman deserves.”

In opening statements, the defense pushed back on claims Barreras murdered her son.

Defense attorney Cynthia Yializis said Roman was a “medically compromised” child that required doctor visits, which he did not receive, and said it is possible there were “other, natural causes of death”....

The defense attorney shifted blame to the child safety officials, as well as to Roman’s father and adult sister. Yializis said these are people that could have helped Roman when he was alive, but did not...."

Siblings of Roman testify in Barreras trial (with clip)

April 19, 2019

"TUCSON – It was a heart wrenching and an emotional day inside a Pima County Superior courtroom. Witnesses, some who are family members of Raquel Barreras, took the stand to testify....Friday, Roman’s sister told the court said she asked her mom why Roman was left inside that toy chest and the mom replied. “He was very very very bad.”

The brother of Roman also testified and got very emotional as he said he looked inside the toy box in the backyard before they moved and saw his little brother dead inside.

Another sister talked about how Barreras would not let her four other kids play with Roman and said “It was none of their business.”...

The siblings of Roman also talked about how there was a laundry room outside their house. Their mom would keep Roman in it, locked. Two of the kids would sneak in to feed their three-year-old brother crackers and said he looked very thin and knew something was wrong.

The trial is expected to resume on April 29 and wrap up sometime in May."

Jury to begin deliberations in Raquel Barreras’ murder, child abuse trial Friday morning

May 2, 2019

"TUCSON, AZ (KOLD News 13) - The jury will begin deliberations Friday morning for the murder trial of the Tucson woman accused of starving her child to death.

Attorneys presented the closing arguments Thursday, May 2, signifying the close of the case that began in 2014.
Raquel Barreras is facing murder and child abuse charges related to the death of her 3-year-old son Roman Barreras. The prosecution painted a picture of a mother who knowingly starved her child to death. They allege Barreras would not allow her other four children to feed or care for Roman, while keeping him locked inside a storage closet separate from the rest of the house.

“What he endured is child abuse. what he endured at her hands and what led to his death is murder,” says prosecutors....

Barreras’ husband, Martin Barreras, rejected a plea deal on a first-degree murder charge on April 26 and will go to trial on Aug. 6...."
