AZ - Toddler, 21 months, 911 called from CVS parking lot, dies later after being abused for over long period of time, Glendale, 8 Feb 2024 *arrests*

Yes, people have to really put the child first and be cautious about who they let into their life. Over the years I’ve seen so many boyfriends and girlfriends who have abused and killed their lover’s child. The stories keep piling up.

Not that it needs to be said here, but there are some great step moms, step dads, BF's, GF's. We only see stories about the bad ones.

It is sad. I don't understand why anyone would hurt children. And it seems to be happening more frequently.

Yes, you’re right. There are plenty who can be trusted. It’s just when they can’t be, the consequences are disastrous.

I should look at this more often...

Case info: According to court records, Francisco Javier Felix Higuera & Maria Isabel Machado Perez drove a 21-month-old boy to a CVS pharmacy on Thursday because he was not moving a& not breathing. The boy had bruises all over his body & cuts on his head, face & groin area. Firefighters were called. The boy was taken to Banner Thunderbird Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Higuera & Perez were taken into custody & police asked them how the boy got injured. Higuera initially said they were in a car crash “about 10 to 15 days ago” where they were rear-ended on the freeway, but later admitted that was a lie & that he was covering for Perez, according to police. Turns out, Perez was rear-ended by a hit-and-run driver & the boy was not in a car seat or wearing a seatbelt. Higuera told investigators that is how he got bruises on his face. Authorities say Higuera told them that the boy fell in the shower & had trouble standing at a park. A few days before being driven to the CVS, Higuera said the boy was throwing up & not eating, according to police. During questioning, Higuera was showing photos of the victim’s injuries & he admitted the bruises on his cheeks were from when he forced the boy’s mouth open to eat because he had not eaten since he was throwing up. Higuera was questioned again the next day when police showed him the boy’s autopsy results, which revealed that he was abused over “a long period of time.” Higuera then admitted to throwing the boy about four feet above the ground & into a crib on the day they took him to CVS, according to police. Higuera said he did this because the boy’s full diaper broke & he was covered in feces & after that incident, the boy started throwing up, according to court paperwork. Higuera also admitted to police to beating the boy with a belt on his chest & backside, according to police. Higuera was arrested & booked into jail on charges of first-degree murder and child abuse. Perez was arrested & faces a child abuse charge since police said she allowed the abuse to happen & didn’t give the boy medical care when he needed it. The autopsy revealed the boy died mainly due to a laceration to his liver & a detached bowel. The injuries caused the victim to bleed internally until he died. The timeframe of the onset of the injuries was consistent with the boy being in Felix-Higuera’s care.
Trial was set to begin on 10/23/24 continued on 1/7/25.

Maria Isabel Machado-Perez (19)
She is 19 and had a 2-year old? Wow. Kids should not have kids.
Depending on the length of their relationship, this might also have been not legal? And the baby daddy was certainly illegal. Or would a 16/17-year-old and a, say, 21-year-old be legal in AZ?
Google told me:
The age of consent in Arizona is 18 years of age. This means that anyone who is 17 or younger is legally incapable of consenting to sexual conduct. Anyone who has sex with someone under the age of consent can be charged with a serious sex offense. The crime is often a felony, and rarely a misdemeanor.
Yes, I know teens have sex, but an adult impregnating a teen really should be prosecuted.

Higueroa is the step father - and I changed his age to 22 - born Dec/2001 & she is born Dec/2004.
