WTH? --86? How can it happen so many times without someone being locked up for awhile?

Well, she's a juvenile. The sad thing is most parents will NEVER give up on their child, despite all evidence that their child does not reciprocate their love, & some may spend their last moments knowing their own child is killing them. & I guess it's not really sad, just tragic & chilling, because most parents I know would willingly give their lives for their kids.

“There has been no confession yet, but the couple are now being detained and interrogated,” said Hery Wiyanto, Bali police spokesman, adding that the killing took place on Tuesday...

Ida Bagus Putu Alit, a forensic expert at the hospital that conducted an autopsy, said Sheila von Wiese-Mack, 62, had been “hit by a blunt object, and the blows were concentrated on the face and head.”

“There were signs of a struggle by the victim as there were bruises on her arms, and some fingers were broken,” Alit added.

I looked up Bali prisons. Ugh very very bad. They are in for the shock of their lives.

Schaefer was arrested and Mack was detained last month at the Conrad Hotel on Rush Street, after an employee called police about a disturbance. Chicago police confirmed Schaefer was charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct and breach of peace. Mack was released without charges.

Schaefer also had a 2012 conviction for simple assault, but was sentenced to court supervision. He had previous drug- and alcohol-related arrests, but charges were dropped in those cases.

Sheila von Wiese Mack was on vacation with her 19-y.o. daughter in Bali, when the daughter's 21-y.o. boyfriend joined them. The mother and boyfriend were seen arguing. The daughter and her bf later checked out, calling a taxi, and putting a suitcase in the trunk. They told the driver to wait, then disappeared. After waiting two hours, he drove to the police station, where they opened the bloody suitcase, and found Sheila. Police tracked down the daughter and her boyfriend, and arrested them.

Was it pre-arranged/planned for the boyfriend to join the mother & daughter in Bali or did he just show up? TIA

I believe Sheila and Heather were already there and Tommy arrived shortly before the murder. Like that day or maybe the day before. On August 6, he posted on FB about trying to get his passport.

Also noticed Tommy refers to Heather as Heather Reyes-Mack on FB. Where does the "Reyes" come from?

Chicago widow Sheila von Wiese-Mack had traded in her Starwood travel points to go on vacation halfway around the world to the posh and popular St. Regis Bali Resort in Indonesia. She took her 19-year-old daughter, Heather, as she had on every getaway, friends said.

But the pair had their tempestuous moments, and those same friends begged von Wiese-Mack not to travel with her daughter this time...

Before leaving for Bali, the mother and daughter had been fighting. Heather Mack had dropped out of college, moved out of the house and was living in a hotel, von Wiese-Mack told her friends. She managed to track the teen down, but barely recognized her anymore, Bacharach said. “She tried to hope when it came [to Heather],” he added.

Her friend and neighbor last saw von Wiese-Mack when she moved from Oak Park to a downtown Chicago condominium about a year ago. She said the victim -- a cultured woman with an MBA who worked for Sen. Ted Kennedy and Studs Terkel at different points in her life -- simply could not control her mentally unstable daughter.

"Either threatened her and battered her, so I came with her once, and she had a psychotic episode. Police came. (The child did?) Yeah. And they took her away," said the friend. "She's the only child she had and she loved her so much, that she didn't want to hurt her and she didn't want to leave her in any mental institution too long. And she was also scared to death."

Mark Bacharach, a close friend of hers, said von Wiese-Mack had long struggled with her daughter after her husband's death in 2006. At least four or five of us would say to kick her out. She was hanging out with a bad crowd,” he told NBC News. “But Sheila always took her back. [Heather] could be as charming and self-effacingly sweet one minute, and then a vicious little monster the next.”

Police believe Schaefer killed the woman after a fight on Monday night.

“We don’t know yet why he killed the victim,” Redastra said. “But Tommy and the victim had a fight last night in the hotel lobby.”

Police found and arrested the couple on Wednesday.

If the daughter was a vicious little monster as the mom's friends claims, why are the police dead set on Schaefer being the killer?

This is a really tragic case all-round. It sounds as if the daughter has a serious history of mental illness........that article posted a little bit earlier today mentions psychotic episondes. She obviously needed some serious help.

Her poor mother.....it's so hard as the mum. You always want to give your child the benefit of the doubt and give them another chance.

Unfortunately though, this is the end result.....

I wonder what the boyfriend's role in this was?

I'm totally shaken up to read what happened to this woman and loving mother who ended up dead in a suitcase.

Noticed on the boyfriend's fb that he said he was going to Indonesia and might not come back. So, now, I'm wondering if this was premeditated. Please stay there, dude, and your gf too. :jail:

WTF is "it"? And, What does "it" do?

Was this her biological child?

"She ended up becoming an editor for Studs Terkel, as well. “Of course he had his radio show at WFMT, and he had an assistant there, Sydney Lewis. But he had me editing his published interviews, and he’d often invite me along when he was going to see someone interesting.” One day, Terkel off-handedly said that he thought she should consider the unusual University of Chicago PhD program that goes by the name “Committee on Social Thought.” In particular, Terkel said she should study with Saul Bellow. She demurred, saying that it sounded intimidating. “Just go talk to him,” Terkel said. Dutifully, she went. When Bellow appeared, he asked her why she was there. She said it was because Terkel had sent her. “Well, then,” Bellow said, “if he sent you, I guess we should take you on.” Thus began ten years of study with Bellow. “It was an extraordinary time. We studied the books Bellow wanted to study, which included authors Joyce, Fitzgerald, Dickens, and Balzac. Of course I also read all of his own books, but we never discussed them.” In Hyde Park she Photograph by Robert McCamant met and married the musician James Mack.

“He had a big house in Oak Park where he’d lived with his previous wife, so it just seemed sensible to move there.” Among a variety of musical activities, Mack was director of music at Rockefeller Chapel at the U of C. At age 43, she had her daughter."

What a beautiful resort! It's hard to imagine such violence happening on what should have been a lovely vacation.

Good clear pictures of the daughter and the boyfriend after being apprehended. I don't see any scratches or bruises on them, but the boyfriend hides his face. Unfortunately, I think the mother, Sheila, tried to defend herself but was overpowered. JMO, but it sounds as though she may have been sleeping or it bed when first attacked.

By the way, I ran a search and found pics of the main prison in Bali. IMO, it looked clean and not horrible enough for whoever did this to dear Sheila. Bali has very strict drug laws and I wonder if either of them had any drugs on them.
