Obama intel agency secretly conducted illegal searches on Americans for years

More than 5 percent, or one out of every 20 searches seeking upstream Internet data on Americans inside the NSA’s so-called Section 702 database violated the safeguards Obama and his intelligence chiefs vowed to follow in 2011, according to one classified internal report reviewed by Circa.

The Obama administration self-disclosed the problems at a closed-door hearing Oct. 26 before the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court that set off alarm. Trump was elected less than two weeks later.

This collection of Americans’ communications is often called “incidental” because it occurs in the course of surveillance directed at foreign targets. But the “incidental” label is something of a misnomer, because incidental collection is in no way accidental or inadvertent. The government knows in advance that it will acquire Americans’ information in the course of its warrantless surveillance. In fact, intelligence officials advocating for the passage of Section 702 made clear that this was one of the principal purposes of the law.

I'm more concerned with the NSA and Privacy/Civil Rights in general, regardless of who is President.

Obama is no longer president. Republicans control the house, the senate and the presidency. So any concerns about lingering fascist policies from the Bush era that were continued by Obama need to be taken up with those currently in power. Because they have the actual ability to change it with their majority. Think they will?

Well of course not. The surveillance is legal via the Patriot Act, sponsored by republicans, ushered in via bi-partisan support with the majority of dissenters democrats, renewed in 06' by a republican majority in congress, signed by Bush, and extended under Obama with bi-partisan support for its basic tenets.

This is a desperate attempt to deflect from the unmitigated disaster of the Trump administration with something they are trying to relate to Obama, which is wholly irrelevant presently due to the republican trifecta and congressional majority.

No offense to my dear fellow posters meant but this is like a small child being punished for playing with matches and lighting part of the garage on fire, saying, "But Johnny threw eggs at old lady Murphy's house last year!"
"That's true, Jimmy, but what does that have to do with you almost burning down the house today? And I guess you forget that not only did you also throw the eggs, you're the one who came up with the whole idea and encouraged Johnny to do it!"

Obama promised transparency. But his administration is one of the most secretive

After early promises to be the most transparent administration in history, this has been one of the most secretive. And in certain ways, one of the most elusive. It’s also been one of the most punitive toward whistleblowers and leakers who want to bring light to wrongdoing they have observed from inside powerful institutions.

    Please Excuse My President

Few things are more difficult in politics than confronting failure and learning from it. It is especially difficult when a leader you have championed, and in whom you have placed your highest hopes, turns out to be less than he seemed.
Such is the dilemma facing liberals in the age of Obama. Barack Obama entered the presidency with his sights and standards very high, and many liberals believed he could be the transformative figure they had been awaiting for generations. But by now it is clear that, by any reasonable measure (including those set out by Obama himself at the beginning of his term), his presidency has been a failure.

Solyndra: Politics infused Obama energy programs

Then came the August morning when Sterio heard a newscaster announce that more than a thousand Solyndra employees were out of work. Only recently did she learn that, within the Obama administration, the company’s potential collapse had long been discussed.

“It’s not about the people; it’s politics,” said Sterio, who remains jobless and at risk of losing her home. “We all feel betrayed.”

Since the failure of the company, Obama’s entire $80 billion clean-
technology program has begun to look like a political liability for an administration about to enter a bruising reelection campaign.
