Even on the cracked blacktop of “Methadone Mile,” a rough stretch of blocks in the South End where recovering addicts congregate to be dosed each morning, Michael McCarthy stood out as wretched and strange, said dozens who knew him.

With a faraway look in his hooded eyes and a little Pomeranian named Bailey cradled in his arms — to detect his seizures, he told people — McCarthy moved slowly and spoke of conspiracies, the occult, and a demon with horns and a long lizard tail.

Before being elected, Charlie Baker responded to child deaths by demanding state agency resignations; now he's blaming policy.

BOSTON — With the identification of “Baby Doe” as 2-year-old Bella Bond, Gov. Charlie Baker finds himself again thrust into the sad – and sadly familiar – position of responding to the death or mistreatment of a child at one point under the supervision of the state.

The cases pose a unique challenge for Baker – a self-described policy wonk – who served as secretary of health and human services under then-Gov. William Weld in the 1990s.

Bella Bond's grandmother calls mother a liar

(MyFoxBoston.com) - Bella Bond's paternal grandmother is expressing regret that she hadn't taken the baby before her murder.

She also said she believes Rachelle Bond, Bella's mother, is a liar.

Quinn said Bond showed up at her house last Thursday night with her son, Joe Amoroso, and said they had something to tell her.

The next morning when news broke that police had identified Bella as Baby Doe, she Amoroso and Bond were all watching the news together. Shortly after, investigators came and arrested Bond.

Quinn says funeral services have not yet been finalized for Bella.

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) - Bella Bond's remains are still at the medical examiner's office in Boston and according to the Suffolk county District Attorney that’s where they will remain during the investigation and legal precedings.

Bella's father, who hasn’t been in Bella's life, said he wants these do-gooders to know he appreciates it.

“I just want all the people out there to know that Bella was an angel sent from heaven just brought back home. She touched the lives of many and I am so grateful and so thankful for all of the love and compassion and support that's out there,” Joseph Amoroso said.

Amoroso is most likely Bella's legal next of kin, according to the DA, and will likely be the one who makes the decision about when and where Bella is buried once the medical examiner's office releases her.

Keller @ Large: Why No Charges For Bella Bond’s Father?

Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley tells WBZ political analyst Jon Keller that it does not appear that Joe Amoroso is criminally culpable.

“He didn’t have knowledge of the acts that constituted the homicide and the accessory after the fact, we believe, no more than a day before the arrests were made,” Conley said. “We can perhaps say he is morally culpable, he certainly should’ve picked up the phone and done something earlier.”

Shapiro pointed the finger at Bond after yesterday’s hearing in Dorchester District Court. “When she was arrested for Bella Bond’s death, she decided to blame it on Mr. McCarthy,” he said. “That is simply not true. He is shocked and saddened by the death of Bella Bond, but he did not kill her.”

But one veteran litigator thinks prosecutors need to hold Rachelle Bond accountable, too, even though she helped deliver the goods on her boyfriend.

A look at Bella before she was Baby Doe

Rachelle Bond was 36 years old and homeless, a drug addict and a prostitute, when she stood before a judge in 2012, desperate to stay out of prison.

Hauled into a Boston courthouse that day, Bond had violated every condition of her probation, including an order that she attend a drug rehabilitation program.



But Bond was also three months pregnant, carrying a baby she hoped would be her salvation. Sending Bond back to rehab instead of to prison, her lawyer argued, might be best for both of them.

“Ms. Bond is carrying a child who is voiceless in this particular matter,” the lawyer said.

Born after Bond’s release from prison, Bella Bond would spend the entirety of her short life voiceless. Her middle name, Nevaeh, was “heaven” backwards, and only after she was gone — only after her unidentified body was discovered in a trash bag on the Deer Island shore — did the world begin to hear her.
