Ex-students attack school in Brazil, 8 dead

SUZANO, Brazil (AP) - Two masked men armed with guns, knives, axes and crossbows descended on a school in southern Brazil on Wednesday, killing five students and two adults before taking their own lives, authorities said.

The men, identified as former students at the school in a suburb of Sao Paulo, also shot and killed the owner of a used car business nearby before launching the attack on the school, authorities said.

Besides the five students, the dead included a teacher and a school administrator, said Joao Camilo Pires de Campos, the state's public secretary. Nine others were wounded in the school attack and hospitalized, he said.
Authorities identified the attackers as 17-year-old Guilherme Taucci Monteiro and 25-year-old Henrique de Castro.

"The big question is: what was the motivation of these former students?" de Castro said.

Monteiro opened fire with a .38 caliber handgun and de Castro used a crossbow, de Campos said, adding that forensics would determine how the victims died.

The attackers were also carrying Molotov cocktails, knives and axes, authorities said

"In 34 years as a policeman, it's the first time I see someone use a crossbow like that," police Col. Marcelo Salles said. "It is horrendous."

    Deadly shooting at Brazilian school

The school has some 1,000 primary and secondary students, aged between six and 18, and a language centre. It is located in downtown Suzano, some 50km (31 miles) from São Paulo.

The gunmen entered the school and shot dead the co-ordinator, 59-year-old Marilena Ferreira Umezo, before killing another employee, said Marcelo Salles, commander of police forces in São Paulo.

They then killed four students and injured several others before going to the language centre, where a teacher and students locked themselves in a classroom. The attackers then killed themselves in the hallway.

Only secondary students were at the school at the time of the shooting. Police arrived eight minutes after being called and did not confront the gunmen. Two students later died in hospital.

Atiradores de Suzano, que usaram a estética de Columbine, eram vizinhos “tranquilos”

Suzano shooters, who used the aesthetics of Columbine, were "quiet" neighbors,

Luiz Henrique de Castro, 25, and Guilherme Taucci Monteiro, 17, lived on the same street and studied at the Suzano school that they invaded this morning.

    SBM

Cesar says that Luiz Henrique had a normal relationship with the family and mentions only a few fights, "what happens in the whole family." Another neighbor, who declined to identify herself, said that "Luiz was the most explosive and Guilherme was quieter". The neighborhood speculates on the reasons for the incident and comments on the profile of the young people named as the perpetrators of the attack. "For me, Luiz was more likely to plan something like that," says another neighbor, who also does not want to identify himself. Others say that Luiz's family barely spoke to their neighbors. "They were always very reserved, they were little talk."

Crimes committed by young people in Suzano bear a number of similarities to those committed by Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold at Columbine High School in Colorado, United States, in 1999, which left 13 dead and 24 wounded. In both cases, they were former students who used different types of weapons - among them explosives - and wore dark clothes, hats, gloves and a tactical belt.

Columbine, Realengo e Suzano, os mais sangrentos massacres nas escolas de Brasil e EUA

    SBM

In the last 20 years, there have been at least six expressive tragedies in Brazilian colleges. In addition to today's:

    - Goiânia (Goiás) in 2017: Two students were killed and four others were injured in a shootout at a school in Goiânia, capital of Goiás. The crime was committed by a 14-year-old companion of the alleged bullying victims .

    - Janaúba (Minas Gerais), in 2017 - The night watchman of the day care Center Municipal de Educação Infantil Gente Inocente set fire to dozens of children between four and six years. Eight of them died and two dozen had to be rescued. A teacher and the perpetrator also died.

    - Realengo (Rio de Janeiro) in 2011: Twelve students from a school in Realengo, a humble neighborhood on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, died after a man opened fire. The bomber, identified as Wellington Menezes Oliveira, 24, was a former student of the school and committed suicide after the massacre.

    - São Caetano do Sul (São Paulo) in 2011: A ten year old student shot a teacher and then committed suicide at a public school in São Caetano do Sul, in the metropolitan region of São Paulo.

    - Taiúva (São Paulo) in 2003: A Brazilian student shot himself in the head after shooting nine people in high school studying in the city of Taivava, 370 kilometers northwest of São Paulo. One of the wounded died, while another was paralyzed.

Brazil school attackers imitating Columbine massacre: police

Brazil school attackers imitating Columbine massacre: police

Two young men who stormed their former school in southern Brazil armed with a gun, crossbows and axes, killing seven people, were trying to emulate the 1999 Columbine attack in Colorado and had been planning the assault for months, police said Thursday.

Friends and former classmates told investigators that 17-year-old Guilherme Taucci Monteiro and 25-year-old Henrique de Castro were obsessed with the attack on Columbine High School, Sao Paulo civil police director Ruy Ferraz told a news conference. He said the pair had been planning the attack since at least November.

Ferraz said the acquaintances said they didn't believe the attack would actually happen, or feared that telling anyone would make them targets.

The Colombine attack, also undertaken by two heavily armed young men, left 13 dead. And as in Wednesday's rampage, the Columbine assailants took their own lives.

Monteiro and de Castro "wanted to prove they could act like in Columbine High School with cruelty and with a tragic character so they could be more recognized than" even the Columbine killers, Ferraz said

Ferraz said a third person, a 17-year-old former student at the school, had been involved in planning but was not present at the school when the attack happened.

He did not identify the accomplice but said police have asked a judge to issue a warrant for the teen's arrest.

Teenager detained over Brazil school shooting

Brazilian police on Tuesday arrested a teenager suspected of involvement in planning last week's high school shooting that left eight people dead and shocked a country long-used to deadly gun violence.

The 17-year-old was initially detained on Friday, but later released after denying taking part in the attack near Sao Paulo by two ex-pupils, who committed suicide.

A judge ordered the boy's arrest after police obtained new evidence from his home and cell phone, and those of the killers, a police official in Sao Paulo told AFP on the condition of anonymity.

The teenager, a former classmate of one of the attackers, can be held for a maximum 45 days without charge.
