SPRINGFIELD — A week before Christmas in 1971, a young man with reddish-brown hair booked a room in the Hotel Charles in downtown Springfield. He signed the register as Bruce Peck, of 21 Orange St., Storrs, Connecticut.

Two days later, on Dec. 19, hotel staff found him dead in his room on the eighth floor.

Police quickly determined he died by suicide — the door was locked from the inside, there was a nearly-empty bottle of barbiturates on the bed with him and his head was wrapped in a towel — but detectives soon learned they had a bigger issue.

Bruce Peck was a made-up name, and 21 Orange St., Storrs, Connecticut, is a made-up address.
There was nothing in the room that could identify him. No driver’s license, no luggage, no personal papers, no anything that would direct police to his family.

In the days, weeks and months that followed, multiple articles appeared in the press, both in Springfield and Connecticut, about Bruce Peck. Police were hoping someone would come forward to reveal his real identity.

No one ever did.

Peter Joseph Bonick could be a possibility. Brown hair/Hazel eyes.

Peter was last seen on February 22, 1970. He was last seen traveling with a male companion.

Yes a good resemblance, especially in the jawline and chin. From what I have read about Peter, he was troubled and in trouble at a young age.

Thank you for posting the side by side.

Ironically, his last initial is ‘B’ and first initial is ‘P’. Reverse for alias of Bruce Peck.

Do you happen to see where UID height/weight is posted?
ETA - I see it in the article you posted. Thanks.
There is an uncanny resemblance between the UP and Peter Joseph Bonick. MOO

In the Bruce Peck newspaper cutting it says he was "about 5 feet 10"

Wow, strange coincidence!

I believe Peter is worth submitting for review. He has many rule outs, but this UID is not listed.

Oddly, "Bruce Peck" is not listed anywhere...

If anyone can find a higher quality version of the PM, I'd be up for doing a recon of BP.

Does John Doe have a chipped front tooth? Peter does.

Interestingly enough, a woman in/from a nearby town had an actual son named Bruce Peck. He was living in Colorado as of 2012, but grew up nearby I'm sure. He must have been of a fairly similar generation as this young man, who would have been born about 1951,as this woman was born in 1929. I came across her obit by accident. I wouldn't think that is a common name? I wonder what was this John Doe's motivation to use that name? https://obits.masslive.com/us/obituaries/masslive/name/maida-peck-obituary?id=20239798
