This is slightly off topic, but one of my brothers had a seizure and then was unresponsive for a while overnight. He is now in the hospital while they try to figure out what’s going on (he has a history of a brain tumor, so anything like this is potentially serious). I am at the airport preparing to leave on a work trip. We haven’t lived together for over 35 years and we are at opposite ends of the political spectrum, but I would give anything to be by his side right now. I can’t imagine how this feels for the children. [emoji22]

Thinking of you and your brother - hugs!

I don't see that. I see all those kids responding to what they are told to do by Elvis. There is no spontaneity where they impulsively jump up to do a few quick dance steps to Jailhouse Rock, no real interaction between them and Elvis that is not called on by him for them to do, no impulsive hugs for each other or mom and dad.

In my family, the kids would have jumped up and danced in the aisles at an occasion like that. Some of the adults too. They might have been quiet during the "vows" part of it, but when the music started their legs would have been jumping in time with the beat of the music. Given the circumstances where they have been starved I can see they may not have felt like running around, but on the other hand, there is no real pleasure in the faces of those kids.

In my view for what was supposed to be a joyful occasion, it had almost a funeral air. If the T's meant to show how happy their kids was, it was a huge flop in my opinion.

The staged facade on Facebook makes me wonder if the reason they did this was for the parents to attempt to show they were 'normal' a few years ago. That is why I am wondering if there were some calls to authorities somewhere. Also someone made a good point that they changed private school names when they moved from Murrieta to Perris. Why would they change names of the private school? Well that makes me wonder whether someone contacted authorities in Murrieta at some point. In California the houses are so close together. When you view the model home in the CA Perris home, you can see some windows of the second story house next door literally looking into the window of the Perris house. Also I wonder why they had one Facebook account with both of their names on it as opposed to two. Perhaps the authorities will find all sorts of things on their computers.

Is this hearing called by the prosecution wanting to terminate parental rights or just contact?

I'm using something called critical thinking.

You are utilizing critical thinking to analyze information that you have obtained solely from law enforcement and the district attorney.

Woah! Assisted living is NOT a nursing home. Maybe that’s why there’s so much concern in some of the posts here.

Assisted living is basically an apartment building with a few modifications that you might not even notice, like red bell pulls to summon help.

Generally, the apartments are just like any other apartment! Except maybe the doors are wider (to accommodate wheelchairs), housekeeping, meals downstairs, or not, handicapped showers...

You pay rent, just like an apartment.

The apartments I’ve been in have full kitchens, opened to a living/dining area. These are not gourmet kitchens (though maybe some facilities have that, too), but are otherwise complete, including stove, microwave, fridge....no problem baking a batch of cookies for visitors or neighbors. Kitchen knobs will be easy to reach.

The apartments can be studio, 1 bedroom, 2 bedrooms. I’ve visited my aunt at a place where she and her husband had adjoining units, and the wall was taken down between them. That way, they could each have their own stuff.

There are different ways for handling laundry. Linens may be provided.

Some folks never eat downstairs....

Many assisted living places are like resorts....swimming pool, gardens, activities, pampering.

You usually pay extra for skilled nursing or have to arrange your own (at your expense) with an outside organization.

Hope that clarifies. We’re talking about a structured, protected environment that eliminates some of the crazy in the world outside. We’re talking neighbors, people keeping an eye on things, and whatever level of attention you need. And we’re talking about having a home, not a hospital bed.

I continue to think this is a genius plan. But assisted living is not to be confused with a nursing home.

Now I see someone else has responded to the misconception about assisted living. But the distinction between that and a nursing facility needs to be clear.

I think you're right. When describing the assisted living facilities I'm familiar with, I was thinking of the individual apartments - bedroom, bath, living, kitchen with dining area. But, I'm sure others might have been thinking 'nursing home.' The big one we have nearby has independent living apartments too that are 1, 2, or 3 bedrooms, 1 or 2 baths and have a carport for your car.

All of that can be true and coexist with what the state found.

The medical staff were clear with their condition- muscle wasting. A 29 year old weighing 82 pounds. Emaciation. Cognitive delays due to neglect and starvation.

The fact that the adults are being transferred to an assisted living facility bears that out.

No one is lying.

There was a case of a family with multiple children who targeted two foster kids in particular. They are featured with the rest of the large family in professional family photographs with their skeletal faces standing out.

Just because the parents sometimes took their kids places once in a while doesn't mean the DA was exaggerating.

They lived in squalid conditions. Physical abuse. Sexual abuse. Starved. Chained.

Being escorted to community college by the psycho mom doesn't change that. Neither does sitting outside with a couple of them at a contest. Or decorating their home for a couple hours with a nativity scene.

This is a deeply disturbed family. It is likely that the parents felt they were normal or tried to approximate normalcy at times.

BBM
While I agree that they these kids were abused, chained to furniture, and lived in filthy, disturbing, conditions, it's coming out that there were sightings of them outside, in what seemed to be normal family activities. I agree, that it seems, as you say, LT/DT either felt they were normal, or attempted to do/be normal, at times.

In the beginning, though, I thought that no one had seen them at all, except Elvis dude, the kid in TX and the person who'd found the runaway. It turns out that lots of folks have seen them but had no clue what went on behind closed doors, they just thought they were odd, or, they were like the kid in my class who hadn't been taught at home about pesonal hygiene.

I have to say, I never watched the vow renewal videos. I just couldn't.

If this case were unsolved, I would. But, I just can't...

Could be. Also could have started the Facebook profile as a way of putting family off. That way they could respond to requests for pictures and updates by simply saying it's all on Facebook.

In this case, I would say it is an early step in the process of termination of their parental rights.

Or minimization of victims abuse, pain, and narratives. Reducing those narratives to a DA's "political motivations" Minimization, blame shifting, and denial.

Absolutely not victim centered.

How about truth centered or justice centered?

And?

Those are the facts we have right now. We have no logical reason in the world to doubt them.

And VMMKING is not currently on a jury or under instruction from a judge. None of us are.

And victims. And family (both those in support of the Turpin and those against). And neighbors. And classmates. And guys who sold them tacos weekly.

I'm analyzing all of it.

I have zero reason to believe the facts that we have now are not the truth, therefore the discussion is "truth centered".

Justice for who?

The Turpins? Or their 13 victims, 6 of which are children.

This is pretty much what I thought.

I don't have FB, but I know about it. Their presence seems skimpy. I think it was done to appease old people specifically.

Knowing what we know:

This isn't minimizing?

Or this?

There's a lot that sensational about the reporting in this case...starting with the headlines that were splashed everywhere in the news and social media. I would expect this from the Mirror or Daily Telegraph, but not NBC

California parents arrested after 13 children found shackled, held captive in their Perris home (link)

Obviously the 29 yr old escapee was not found shackled. There were actually 2 or 3 found shackled and there were no charges against them related to the baby.

Do these statements of fact minimize the neglect and abuse these children and adults suffered?

This has probably been posted already, but it says that they were isolated from each other and held in different rooms in small groups.

From your link:

Investigators have learned that the children were isolated from each other and locked in different rooms in small groups, Hestrin said.

The children did not have access to televisions or radios but were able to read and write and expressed themselves in hundreds of journals that were seized from the home, the district attorney said.

"It appears to me that they lacked any kind of understanding about how the world worked," Hestrin said.
