CA - Barbara Stroud, 18, Willits, 7 January 1973

What makes this case so heartbreaking is that Barbara Stroud was a loving and dutiful daughter. She was taking a gap year between high school and college to aid her parents in building up their business up on Ridgewood Summit south of town. And while she was doing that, a pack of savages raped and murdered her. It raises the indignation meter a couple more notches.

Is there any indication/suspicion that one or more of these assailants had a hand in other rape-murder-disappearances before or after? The fact that their names were called in to the sheriff tells me they had a reputation. For example John Annibel originally from Humboldt County just to the north was only convicted of one murder (Debra Sloan in Mendocino County) but suspected of several more in Humboldt previously. Could any of these guys be suspects in other cases?

Bruce Anderson, the editor of "The Anderson Valley Advertiser" hasn't forgotten Barbara...

and obviously, I haven't either.
Bruce presents a slightly differing scenario from the one I wrote above. He is probably more accurate, given that he has been following this case for year's , and may have the court records for the case. Anyhow, the details don't matter. Finding the evidence to charge and convict the two surviving defendants is what counts.

It's been 46 years...way too long for justice to be delayed.

A detail to clarify above information:
The defendants in Barbara's murders didn't get far enough in the trial process to be able to claim double jeopardy. This means the survivors can still be prosecuted!

Unsolved cold case: The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office still is investigating who murdered Barbara Stroud on Jan. 7, 1973. After leaving her boyfriend’s house in Willits that day, evidence shows her car was forced off Highway 101 about 2 miles north of the city. Her body was found three days later in a nearby remote area, and Stroud had been sexually assaulted and strangled. In 1975, six Willits men were arrested and five were charged. After a judge determined there wasn’t enough evidence linking them to the murder, the charges were dropped. In 2008, Detective Andy Whiteaker submitted old evidence to the state Department of Justice for DNA analysis, the Press Democrat reported. The DNA evidence didn’t result in any matches, and the case remains unsolved, according to the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office. (Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office)
