Sad. For reference here is a photo I took of Ragged Point and just how treacherous it is. The road is not visible but it is by the treeline in the upper 1/3 of the photo. Not a road to be driven on carelessly or in bad weather.

Found an aerial view online of the same spot in my photo.

On scene of vehicle over the side North of Ragged Point Highway 1. 1 deceased patient 1 dog located so far. Recovery ongoing

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, Calif. - The California Highway Patrol and the SLO County Sheriff's Office, along with Cal Fire, are investigating a vehicle over the side on state Route 1 just south of Ragged Point in San Luis Obispo County.

A State Parks official first spotted the car and reported it at about 3:30 p.m Tuesday.

Just SOUTH of Ragged Point. Having driven back and forth that makes more sense than north stated in the above tweet.

I think by comparing to the photo in the tweet I posted that this is the spot https://www.google.com/maps/@35.7755429,-121.3270926,3a,75y,192.79h,87.15t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sCZuY-8fcEjLlMQdF5iAnhA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

BREAKING NEWS:::::[ bad news...]

Just now on local ch 2 news; POLICE FOUND A CAR OVER A CLIFF BY RAGGED POINT--- one body has been found and one dog has been found so far---but the just now reached the wreckage

Oh no. This confirms my earlier fear they never made it past Ragged Point. An accident must have happened just after they were seen at Ragged Point with the dogs. :(

It's also possible that they reached their destination and were on their way home. The south bound lane is next to the cliff. The north bound lane hugs the base of the slope.

Sad day today here on WS. Prayers for their families for strength and peace.

RIP

Additional detail on the location:
The location is a rugged spot about 10 miles north of Hearst Castle along the Central Coast. A helicopter crew surveyed the car’s wreckage and spotted what were believed to be the bodies of a human and a dog about 15 feet from the vehicle, Seebart said.

This news report confirms that "The investigation on the highway is concentrated at a vista point, where there is no guardrail." I agree with your analysis that that would be the "Ragged Point - Scenic View" so your map is spot on.

This is a far view of the "View Spot" as you would approach it from the north:

This is a near view of the "View Spot" as you would approach it from the north:

This is the view of the "View Spot" as you would approach it from the south:

The highway is fairly straight around the "View Spot". I makes me wonder what might have happened for their car to go "over the side" here. It's all very sad.

This is one of my worst nightmares. Last year my boyfriend and I drove from LA to Vancouver, BC for fun and took the coastal cliff route. Absolutely breathtaking but terrifying. Any time it started to get foggy or rainy, I had us stop. The weather in CA has been rainy and windy the last few weeks, I can't imagine how scary this had to be or how tricky those roads were. RIP. :(

Not sure if this allowed, if not admin please remove... What I've been able to discern from family members and friends on social media, the body of Brian Fernandez has been located along with his car. The body of Olivia Gonzales has not yet been located so her church, family and friends are still holding onto hope.

Such a sad story indeed. We do not know all of the details yet, but if this was just a terrible car accident due to road conditions and weather, I sure feel terrible for Mr. Fernandez's family considering the sister (Olivia's) vocalized suspicions regarding his involvement early on.

My thoughts go out to these families.

God Bless those fire and rescue workers. They must have been there all night in what looks like horrible weather conditions. At times it looked like it was snowing and at other times it looks like heavy rain blowing sideways right into their faces and they didn't even flinch at the rain hitting them while they worked those ropes. I hope they have better weather today to finish the recovery.

Slo Stringer is one of go to sources here on the CC. They do a great job when our local news isn't around.
