snipped...Footage from a KTLA news helicopter showed firefighters and police officials milling around four large rooftop water tanks, two of which had been opened.

...Firefighters will use specialized tools to get the body out, said Los Angeles Fire Dept. Capt. Jamie Moore. The body will have to be removed from the tank in good enough condition that it can be analyzed.

...The LAPD told CBC News that the rooftop had previously been searched, though it's unclear if the water tanks had been checked. There is no security camera on the roof.

...LAPD Sgt. Rudy Lopez said anyone could have opened the tanks, but access to the rooftop should have been restricted.

Police in Los Angeles confirmed the body retrieved Tuesday from the water tank of the hotel where Vancouver resident Elisa Lam was last seen Jan. 31 as that of the missing student.

    snip

“It is her. They’ve confirmed it with the body markings,” Officer Diana Figueroa said Tuesday evening. “It is under investigation, I don’t have anything further.”

Figueroa said it was too early to say how Lam was killed.

    snip

Police said the discovery of the body is being treated as a homicide investigation.

To recover the body, LA Fire Urban Search and Rescue used a power saw to cut into the tank to preserve evidence on her body and the tank.
Now, it's up to the LAPD to find her killer.

They've interviewed all the hotel employees and guests but will re-interview them as someone familiar with the hotel may be responsible. There is no public access to the roof; it's secured with a lock and an alarm.

An autopsy has not yet been scheduled for the woman but would likely occur Thursday morning, Los Angeles County coroner's spokesman Ed Winter said.

Winter said investigators were still trying to determine how and why Lam got in the water tank and had "no idea" yet how long she may have been inside. The matter is being treated as a death investigation, he said.

Law enforcement officials familiar with the case said although foul play was always a possibility, they are closely examining whether her death might have been accidental.

Lam, of Vancouver, British Columbia, traveled to California alone on Jan. 26 and was last seen five days later by workers at the hotel near Skid Row that offers rooms for $65 a night.

Police initially called her disappearance suspicious. Investigators are now considering the possibility of foul play because of the location where the body was found.

    - guests have been ordered not to drink the water, water test results from Public Health not available until Thursday

    - according to two guests, the water had been a "dribble" for days

    - a ladder would have to be taken to the platform [from this I take it's not left beside the water tanks - you'd have to go get it]

Hope I'm allowed to link to this:
