Recovered/Located CA - Cecil Knutson (dec'd), Dianna Bedwell (inj'd), Valley Ctr, 10 May 2015

"San Diego County Sheriff’s Department May 12, 2015 Page 2"

"At this time, any surveillance video that has captured the couple leaving the casino will not be released to the public."

"A parallel investigation is ongoing and specific details cannot be discussed at this time."

This is from the Press Release, under Update:Missing Couple-Valley Center
http://apps.sdsheriff.net/press/default.aspx

also from this link => homicide unit called in.

with the video of the couple getting into their car not being released, Diana's phone going dark "almost immediately", Cecil's phone going dark 15 minutes later, the phone last pinging "away" from their intended direction, their car's gps going dark and now homicide coming on board....sounds to me that they may have met with foul play.

They have been reiterating on the news - the daughter herself said it - homicide gets called in (here, at least) on nearly every missing person case that goes beyond a few hours.

Here, at least, and they said it specifically on the news again talking about Cecil and Dianna, that they do it because it allows them additional resources.

I'm sure on some level it's also in case an investigation goes that way, but they've been very specifically saying it today when talking about this case, that they're doing it because of the additional resources.

Their daughter Debbie Apple, speaking on camera today, said "homicide detectives" were hard words to hear simply because of the word 'homicide,' but that they're grateful because it's bringing resources they'd not have otherwise.
Homicide detectives were assisting in the search although officials said the incident is still considered a missing persons case. It is standard procedure to include homicide detectives in such cases, department officials told NBC 7.

The daughter, Debbie, is interviewed in this clip here also, and they again talk about homicide being brought in and emphasizing again it being because it's routine, but the part with Debbie talking about her reaction isn't here.

I'll keep hunting, as it was in the part I heard live (and posted during) earlier this evening.

“My mom has never missed a phone call from me – ever – she answers it every single time.” Said Robert Acosta when she didn’t answer her cell phone on Mother’s Day when he called worried because she and her husband did not arrive to his La Quinta home for their Mother’s Day celebration.

“My gut says they are trapped and my mom is telling my dad ‘don’t worry my son is going to find us.”

These parents sure are loved!

Their kids say such sweet things - about one another as well (the sister feeling so badly her brother was dealing with the first hours alone until she got out here, etc.)

“I’m going to find my parents. I don’t know how, in what state, but I’m going to find them … I owe it to them because they’ve given me everything,” Robert Acosta, Bedwell’s son said.

About once a month, on Saturday, I drive my Auntie to our local Indian Casino. She loves to play the penny slots. The very last thing we do before we leave is turn in any winning receipts at the cashier window. I am always very highly aware of any one watching us. I wonder if Paul and Dianna were keeping track of any one lurking nearby when they cashed out?

“All we can do is hope and pray that they are found alive,” said Donna Miller, who lives next door to the couple in the Rancho La Paz mobile home park off East Orangethorpe Avenue.

From neighbors (and some little bits from kids again)

Knutson and Bedwell seem to get along well with each other and are affectionate, Miller said.

“He was kind and patient with her and called her honey,” she said. “Dianna said, ‘I don’t know what I would do if anything happened to him.’”

Charlie Miller, Donna Miller’s husband, said Knutson has a wry sense of humor.

“He calls me the kid,” Charlie Miller, 70, said, chuckling.

Smith said her dad is sarcastic and constantly makes little quips.

“When the whole family is together, everyone walks around holding their sides because they have been laughing so much,” Smith said.

She described Bedwell as having a gentle nature.

“She is a sweetheart,” Smith said.

Son being ex-LE probably explains his incredibly quick response to not just worrying, but getting out there and looking!

The couple were playing nickel slots because they had had a run of luck at the casino previously, Knutson’s daughter Kristen Smith said from her Palm Bay, Fla., home.

Knutson and Bedwell had planned on going to the home of Bedwell’s son, Robert Acosta, a former San Diego-area police officer who lives in La Quinta in Riverside County for a Mother’s Day dinner, Smith said.

This is good to know he's done a whole lot of driving in his lifetime - and obviously with a lot of responsibility.

Knutson and Bedwell, both retired school bus drivers who have been married for more than 25 years, are diabetic and without their medications, Smith said.

“It was just a day trip, but I’m hoping they kept surplus medicine in a little case in the car,” Smith said.

And another tidbit from the neighbor:

Despite their diabetes, Knutson and Bedwell are “robust and alert,” said Miller, though she noted Knutson suffered a fall about a month ago when he tripped on some uneven pavement while pushing a trash container to the curb.

This is not looking good. :(

Both of these are from LA stations and are quite good I think.

The comments about the car tracking thing really keep making it seem like this has to be an accident UNLESS they know it wasn't tracking prior (which it seems like surely has been checked...I'd hope! :waitasec:)

Otherwise they'd either have to have done it in the lot (which seems like they'd know didn't happen since Paul is seen going to get the car and then get Dianna) or else they'd have to stop and do it - if it were to be intentional (which I REALLY doubt in this case)

Or else someone else would have to know their car HAD the tracking thing AND had it enabled...and that all just seems like a long shot and that it'd have to have been planned well in advance.

While I don't think something being done to them is totally out of the question, and I think is more probable than suicide of any sort, it seems like it'd be a crime of opportunity and NOT some huge premeditated thing in this case.

Especially since if someone really just wanted to kill them and had been behind this well in advance, it'd have been easy to run them off the road and no one would really be any wiser other than thinking it was an older couple who were killed in a crash.

Definitely FB comments on news articles saying the same thing I did about the cell phone issues in a lot of that area - and how much it can vary between networks and even phones (of different models or years) - with some even mentioning specifics by carrier.

https://www.facebook.com/ktla5/posts/10153337358214614 (sweet comment on that one from one of the students who at some point Dianna was a bus driver for talking about how very sweet she was - not a common perception of most students about their bus drivers!)

On this one someone even mentions reception of specific networks on the roads out there https://www.facebook.com/News8/posts/10153262447557552

Obviously this isn't them since it JUST happened, but a crash on one of the routes Paul and Dianna could have driven (Old Castle Road)

It's amazing how many times a week we get bad crashes on several of the possible routes :(

And about 2 hours ago there was another bad one on the same route (Valley Center Road just after the turn from Lake Wolford) This one knocked out the power as well.

Both of these are on the exact same route :(

This one required Mercy Air to transport (w/ blood tech going to the hospital) that looks like it potentially could go fatal.

This is the response call out for that one: 1601, 1612, 3367, 1692, 16R2, MAIR6, 6495

Busy night for the same accident investigation resources - and both callouts for the investigator came less than an hour apart :(

Just for perspective since this is two major injury crashes on a 13 mile possible route for Cecil and Dianna, and all in 90 minutes:

Red is the casino

The first dot very close to it is the Valley Center / Queensbridge rollover one that knocked out power and required Mercy Air

The one closer to 15 is the one on Old Castle / Pamoosa that the FD believes has someone trapped in the burning car

One good thing out of two not good incidents are that this will give them two places they should VERY definitively know Paul and Dianna are NOT.

Both have a very significant call out, so anything within the immediate area of either would almost certainly get noticed.

And if Paul and Dianna were sort of stuck nearby in their car somewhere, hopefully hearing all the sirens for both of these would get them to blare the horn to try to attract attention, which could expand the radius a bit (assuming they were more just in the vein of stuck but still alert, etc.)

Acosta said the family has a special gift waiting for his parents: tickets to the Donnie and Marie show.
"The tickets and that card is still sealed and we're waiting to give it to them," he said.

And there it is..........If somebody expected me to go to the Donnie and Marie show..........I'd go into hiding too.

If not for LE refusing to release the video from the casino, my guess would be a car accident. But it sure is sounding like LE suspects foul play.

I think it just means they are running a parallel investigation as to whether they may have been followed or carjacked after they left the casino. This of course would mean obtaining dozens and dozens of surveillance camera videos from various businesses. All of that in itself is going to take a good amount of time. Some businesses may offer it voluntarily, and some may require a warrant. They then have to go through video by video and review them.

To me it seems like a logical course of action because these two individuals appear to have vanished so quickly, thoroughly and completely. I still think it was a freak accident of some kind, but I don't have access to all the ping information that LE does.
