Downey man arrested in death of 6-year-old South L.A. boy

On Christmas Day, David Nicholson Jr. dropped off presents for his son and daughter at the South L.A. apartment where they lived with their mother.

For D’Vine, 4, he brought a doll set; for Dayvon, 6, a skateboard, walkie-talkies, a Nerf gun and a playsuit of body armor. His daughter was there, Nicholson said, but Dayvon wasn’t. His mother said he was with a man she called “Coach Ty.”

On Thursday, Dayvon’s mother called the boy’s grandparents to tell them he was at the hospital, unable to breathe. Nicholson raced to St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach, where a police officer took him aside and told him Dayvon had died.

.....

Tyler D’Shaun Martin-Brand, 23, a friend of the boy’s mother and a supervisor for a Los Angeles Unified School District after-school program, was arrested Thursday by Downey police in connection with Dayvon’s death. He is being held in lieu of $2-million bail.

.....

Dayvon’s family said Martin-Brand worked at Normandie Avenue Elementary, where Dayvon was in the first grade. They said they are disturbed that the man accused of killing Dayvon worked among children, and they want to know “whether this man was hurting any other kids,” said the boy’s grandfather, David Nicholson Sr.

While the first article states that the suspect was an acquaintance of the mother and an employee of the school district, this one says he was also Dayvon’s basketball coach.

Police have yet to release details surrounding the boy’s death, but family members said he died at the hands of his basketball coach Tyler D’Shaun Martin-Brand, who was arrested and booked on suspicion of murder Friday.

“Dayvon was a loving, fun, just adorable kid that was very energetic, loved people, loved to play,” Virginia Sewell, Dayvon’s aunt, said. “He loved basketball, and he was just a caring kid, he loved everybody.”

DOWNEY, Calif. (KABC) -- A 23-year-old Downey man has been charged in the fatal beating of a 6-year-old boy who was in his care and is being held on $2 million bail.

Suspect Tyler D'Shaun Martin-Brand, 23, appeared in a tense Downey courtroom on Monday but did not enter a plea.

Martin-Brand appeared in court but did not sit down, instead choosing to stand in a doorway during the proceedings. His arraignment was continued until Jan. 16.

Prosecutors say Dayvon was in the suspect's care over the holiday break when Martin-Brand severely beat the young boy at his Downey apartment.

Dayvon was taken to St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach on Thursday and died shortly after he arrived, officials said.

Why was this little one spending Christmas with this guy and not with one of his parents?
Why would the mom hand him off to him and not have him at home on Christmas so his dad could bring his presents? Did she want rid of him for some reason?
Yet his sister was at home.
Something hinky.

Downey man pleads not guilty in death of 6-year-old godson

A Downey man pleaded not guilty Thursday to murder and assault charges stemming from the death of his 6-year-old godson the day after Christmas.
[.....]

He is due back in a Norwalk courtroom March 24, when a date is scheduled to be set for a hearing to determine if there is enough evidence to allow the case against him to proceed to trial.

If convicted as charged, he could face up to 25 years to life in prison, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Thanks for all your work on this sad, sad situation, @Niner. ;)

It's so hard to understand, as are all of the child cruelty/death cases we see. Could the man not see that the little guy was dying? Did he care? Or did he just want little Dayvon dead?
Dammit.
Another angel flies up and is now at peace. Too soon, too soon.

Still showing on the court site that this is happening - maybe a video conference.
