Bones Found Near Where Charlotte Teen Went Missing

    POSTED: 6:15 pm EST February 7, 2007

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, Calif. -- Human bones have been found not far from the area where a teen from Charlotte disappeared nearly a decade ago.

Kristin Modafferi was spending time in San Francisco in 1997 when she went missing.

A utility worker found bones in Santa Clara County, Calif., just outside of San Francisco, on Wednesday.

Here is another article with other missing person possibilities:

Bones found in Los Gatos ravine turned over to coroner
    By Leslie Griffy

    Mercury News

Santa Clara County Sheriff's deputies today handed over several dozen bones found Tuesday under layers of dirt and leaves to the coroner's office, hoping to identify the skeletal remains.

Homicide detectives and other investigators will not continue scouring a ravine near Lexington Reservoir where the bones were uncovered today, having finished searching the site Tuesday.

With part of a torso in hand -- ribs, a clavicle, vertebrae and arm bones -- investigators were not immediately able to identify the age or gender of the person. Those questions could take quite some time to answer, according to Santa Clara County Sheriff's Sgt. Ed Wise.

After a day of combing the area, between 25 and 40 bones were found in about a 30-square-foot portion of a steep ravine off Bear Creek Road near Summit Road, Wise said. No clothing or personal effects were found.

The adult size of the bones rules out the possibility that the body may be the remains of 7-year-old Vallejo resident Xiana Fairchild, who was kidnapped in December 1999. Her skull was found in the Santa Cruz Mountains in January 2001. There are several missing people in the Bay Area. Among them: 18-year-old Kristen Modafferi, of San Francisco, 33-year-old Elizabeth Whited, of San Francisco, and 42-year-old Jeanine Sanchez Harms, of Los Gatos.

Wise said the bones found last week in the Santa Cruz Mountains were not buried, but had been covered by leaves, brush and tree limbs that had fallen to the forest floor over the course of a few years. Some of the bones stuck up out of the brush.

According to a website about Kristin Modafferi, she was 5'8" tall, 140 lbs. The bones appear to be that of a small adult. I don't think this is Kristin.

This is my first post at WS, but I have been lurking for several years ;)

When I first saw this post, I immediately thought of Ylva Hagner who went missing almost 10 years ago from Belmont, CA. Her case has always disturbed me because she was a business acquaintance of my husband.

She is 5'6, probably too tall for these remains but I thought I would throw it out there.

Here is more info about Ylva:

I apparently missed this story on the local news. Los Gatos is close to where I live, and is on the edge of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Over the years the Santa Cruz Mountains have yielded many bodies, and are considered a dumping ground for bodies. Santa Clara County covers a large area, with San Jose as the primary city, surrounded by smaller cities, Los Gatos being one of them.

Kristen Modafferi disappeared in San Francisco, over 50 miles away. Although the bones could belong to any number of missing persons, it's a stretch to immediately say the bones could be hers. Xiana Fairchild's skull was found close to Los Gatos.

Are there any other websites with pics of Ylva I don't know if it's the face or what but I sware I have seen her or some one who looks very much like her I know they say everyone has a twin but this is really going to bug me untill I can place the person I have seen- also does she have and accent/dialect that makes her unique? I am studing speech pathology and I tend to try and place accents/dialects to help train my ear so I tend to notice people with them even if I don't talk directly to them. By accent/dialect I mean would her speech stand out in any way I have been trained (in school)to speak standerd english so even a small one would stand out to me.

My husband says the couple of times he met Ylva, she spoke with an accent. He thinks it was either German or Swedish, but this was 12 years ago or so, so he could be mistaken.

I have been checking out google results- she is reported to be 5'5-5'6 and about 110 lb.

I don't think they believe she just walked away. Her car was located in a neighboring city, she had lots of friends, a successful and satisfying career.

IIRC, they looked at a man that she dated or planned to date or wanted to date her. I am going to have to go back and get the details straight. It's been a while since I have read up on her.

OMG, the family's information screams out it's the professor!! Where can we get more details on this one? Is this guy still walking around free as a bird? That's scary. Sounds like he's the a person of interest, but they probably didn't have enough evidence to hold him. Is there a website on this case? I'm gonna check Belmont's PD website and see.

So is it "at least 5 years" or "not more than 5 years". Those are 2 different time periods.

lol i thought the same. santa clara county is not "just outside" SF, there is a whole nother county between (san mateo) and the area where these remains were is about an hour out from SF. there are TONS of missing from around this area.
