Richmond gang rape instigator gets 32 years in prison

MARTINEZ, Calif. (KGO) -- The man considered the instigator of a horrific attack on a 16-year-old girl outside a homecoming dance at Richmond High School received a long prison sentence Friday.

The plea deal came after jury selection had started in the trial of Manuel Ortega. Had he been found guilty by a jury, Ortega could have faced life in prison. Instead, he entered a plea that will put him behind bars for three decades.

Contra Costa Superior Court Judge Barbara Zuniga had few words for 22-year-old Ortega, the admitted attacker and primary instigator of a horrific gang rape that traumatized a Richmond community three years ago. In exchange for a plea of guilty to charges that included rape in concert, rape with a foreign object and sexual assault with great bodily injury, Ortega received 32 years in state prison.

The sixth and final defendant in a 2009 gang rape of a teenage girl at Richmond High School that shocked the community and drew national attention pleaded guilty to statutory rape in a Martinez courtroom Friday. John Crane Jr., 47, entered the plea in exchange for a three-year prison sentence, which he has already served, according to Contra Costa County Deputy District Attorney Alison Chandler...

Jose Montano of Richmond and Marcelles Peter of Pinole were sentenced last year to 33 and 29 years to life in prison after being convicted on charges of rape in concert, sexual penetration in concert and oral copulation in concert causing great bodily injury. Ari Morales of San Pablo and Richmond resident Manuel Ortega are serving 27-year and 32-year sentences for their roles in the rape and Elvis Torrentes received a six-year sentence.

Prosecutors say the investigation into the rape is ongoing and that the district attorney’s office will continue to try to match unidentified DNA profiles found at the scene of the crime.
