Both were booked into the Kern County Jail just after 8 p.m. according to KCSO. It is unknown at this time where the adoptive parents were arrested.

They are both due in court Thursday morning.

A post circulating on social media showed a picture of an RV that the suspects were reportedly using. Eyewitness News did not confirm the West parents were in that RV or that they were taken into custody from that RV, but Eyewitness News did hear reports of the RV at Highway 43 and Highway 58. Eyewitness News went to that spot and saw a tow truck taking that RV away. The RV had the same license plate number as the RV in the post.

The couple were arrested after 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Mar. 1, 2022, after charges were filed against them earlier that afternoon; their first court appearance is currently slated for this Thursday, Mar. 3, 2022.

Humphrey, of Humphrey & Thompson Attorneys at Law, said it’s difficult to get a murder conviction when there’s no body and only circumstantial evidence. But it may be slightly less difficult when children are involved.

“It’s less likely, just from a layman’s perspective, that a child is going to be self-sufficient and hitchhiking across the country or traveling to the outer reaches of Chile or Peru and living off the land,” he said.

Defense attorney Tony Lidgett has handled almost 100 murder cases. Not one, he said, involved a situation where no body was found.

With adults, there’s the possibility they’ve left town and don’t want to be found. In the case of missing children, they could have been kidnapped, either by relatives or strangers, either to live with and be cared for by the culprit, or for more nefarious reasons.

The Wests entered not guilty pleas to two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of willful cruelty to a child and falsely reporting an emergency. They were arrested Tuesday after being indicted by grand jury.

Defendants Trezell and Jacqueline West appeared with defense attorneys Thursday.

Judge Chad Louie ordered them held without bail and scheduled trial for May 23 but, given that defense counsel has only just been assigned, that date will likely be postponed.

Trezell West is represented by Timothy Hennessy, Jacqueline West by Alekxia Torres Stallings.

Prosecutor Eric Smith asked that all offense reports be sealed and a gag order issued barring attorneys, investigators and witnesses from publicly commenting on evidence. Louie granted the request to seal the offense reports and a motion on the gag order is scheduled next week.

The indictment charges the adoptive parents with the boys’ deaths. The first 2 counts — the murder counts — carry a total potential penalty of 30 years to life in prison. Willful cruelty charges carries six years.

The grand jury returned a “true bill” on the indictment against the defendants, and Judge Colette M. Humphrey approved a warrant for their arrest. The indictment took place over three months.

Zimmer said she can’t discuss the evidence in the case, but there was enough direct and circumstantial evidence to convince the grand jury that a murder was committed.

She and IM, the boys’ stepfather, said Kern County Child Protective Services isn’t giving them any answers.

“We don’t know where they are,” said MW.

“We have no idea if they’re alive or not,” said IM.
