CA - Pacific Palisades - 30,000 People Ordered to Evacuate From L.A. Wildfires #2

I read something the other day that suggested that a lot of the land where there was heavy fuel load was federal. But I can't remember where I read that, so MOO.

In his fact-check article, Gavin Newsom pointed out that the federal govt owns 57% of the forest land in California. The US Forest Service is responsible for that land.
The state of California owns 3% of the forest land in California.
The rest is owned by cities, counties, Native American tribes and private holders. Link

I check the Federal Land Management website Good Neighbor Authority. It appears the only program CA participated in was for restoration after a fire.

CALIFORNIA

Klamath National Forest - Forest-wide Good Neighbor Authority Supplemental Project Agreement with CALFIRE to collaborate on important forest health work, including post-fire recovery across the Klamath National Forest. We currently have a successful collaboration with the Shasta-Trinity Unit of CALFIRE and Shasta Valley Resource Conservation District, for work on the Yreka Craggy project, which will include post-fire restoration work. This forest-wide agreement will maximize our collaborative effort and provide flexibility and opportunities to accomplish shared stewardship goals across the landscape.

I also looked at the CA Bureau of Land Management and found little on fire prevention forestry management. I did find they promote hardening of structures.

....
Known as the California Wildfire Mitigation Program (CWMP), this effort encourages cost-effective wildfire resilience measures to create fire-resistant homes, businesses, public buildings and public spaces.

The problem with mitigation on federal land maybe impacted by conservation groups. It appears the federal government is trying but it's and
uphill battle.

CHICO, Calif. - The topic of wildfires and forest management is front and center amid the destructive wildfires in Southern California. A Plumas County environmental group has filed a lawsuit, demanding more study before this largest-ever forest management project moves forward in the Plumas National Forest.

Unlike most states, California heavily regulates its property insurance market.

In 1988, California voters approved Proposition 103. It said insurance companies had to get permission from the state Department of Insurance before they could raise their rates.

We purchased insurance to shift/ limit our risk. Get a DUI, insurance cost goes up. Have a low cost, high deductible health insurance, personal cost can go up. Live in a high risk area, home owners will increase.

Insurance is a for profit business. They are constantly monitoring and limiting their risk. The more risk the more it cost.

CA limited the ability for private insurance to increase cost to cover ris Citizens made choices, move, uninsured, or a high risk policy with CalFire.

I'm hoping CAFire insurance has enough reserve to pay claim for the current policy holders.

@Elley Mae I wonder if new regulations were ever written? Article states it would be 12/24 before they could take affect, once they were approved. Article was 9/23.

Good information and something that should be remembered when some in Congress propose cutting funds for the US Forest Svc.

It's shocking how much false information about the fires and fire control is spread on the "news" and social media these days. Why do people make up such ridiculous stuff?

You will probably appreciate this as a nurse. I felt that fireworks were partially the reason why I had a job in Special Education. Vision issues, hearing loss, loss of fingers, brain damage...on and on. Really sad that no one realizes this, until after the fact.

I also think that Fourth of July fireworks should pretty much be banned in the Intermountain west, just too dry in the summer, and too much risk of forest fires.
I always worry about our veterans who may suffer from PTSD during fireworks. It has to be so triggering for them. :(

The current fires are in LA County. They do not involve any federal forestry property.

Fire mitigation is the responsibility of LA County.
Moo...

The death toll has risen to twenty seven, with one more victim attributed to both the Palisades and the Eaton fires.

Thirty one people are still unaccounted for.

I thought the Eaton Fire and Hurst Fire were in Angeles National Forest. National Forests have a quirky relationship. We had property about 100 feet from one. Where they start and stop isn't clearly defined either.

ETA: According to Google maps and the NFS maps our property was fairly deep inside the national forest. It's confusing because our fire service was the local town fire dept.

Also there are numerous state and local nature areas within national forests. They're considered "partnerships"

The red flag warning expires on Thursday afternoon. The horrible weather conditions are passing.

Sheriff says that families are at least a week out from being able to return home. They are still going through neighbourhoods - with some areas potentially containing deceased people, so they need the right services there to process the scenes properly. They still have 31 missing people.

Palisades fire investigators have more than 150 leads, and are scouring all available video from state cameras, residents, and social media.

It seems they have privately owned tracks land rental cabins. My apologies.

Have they released any data on structure damage for these areas?

That may depend on how many stock buy-backs they did.

Yes, our house is close to a national park. If there were a fire there, it would be handled locally. The natl. park rangers handle some things, but local LE and EMS handle other issues.

Could be. A Soho NY art gallery owner says that most of the destroyed artworks depict flowers on Japanese paper. And were purchased by Morris from him for $875,000.
The gallery owner (Georges Berges) still has some of Hunter's work at his gallery.

Hmmm, that is going to be interesting. We likely wont know, but I'd love to know how insurance is going to address this.
