Case History
* Remains found in a plastic bag during a dig at a new home site in Redondo Beach. Per anthropologist, bones to be greater than 5 years and potentially decades old. Age is estimated at 20-50 years

While browsing NamUs, I came across this case, and it caught my attention because I live quite close to Redondo Beach.

There is very little info and a wide time frame, but all available info fits Carol Jeanne Lubahn.

The height is within an inch, her age is within range, and her car was found in Redondo Beach in the parking lot of the old Red Onion restaurant (now the Cheesecake Factory) near the corner of N. Harbor Drive and Portofino Way. I wonder where in Redondo Beach the remains were found.


The only other possible with a connection to Redondo Beach is Tawnya Faye Parker, although the DLC is probably too recent.

Her blood was found on a mattress and under the carpet in her boyfriend's apartment on the Esplanade in Redondo Beach.

This case just showed up on my radar this morning, so I have not found anything out other than the little info available in NamUs. I would bet the Daily Breeze newspaper would probably have a story on it. The DB is a local newspaper with a distribution covering the beach cities between the LA Airport and San Pedro.

Human bones: Construction workers made a grisly discovery Aug. 29 in Redondo Beach when they unearthed a bag of human bones.

The bones were buried in plastic at the rear of a lot where a home once stood on Wollacott Street. New condos were going up.

Police said the bones -- including ribs, legs, arms and vertebrae -- were likely that of a woman. No skull was found.

Detectives set out to figure out who the woman is, how she died, and who killed her.

Update: The events of Sept. 11 slowed the investigation, but Redondo Beach detectives are back at it.

"We still have not been able to identify her," Redondo Beach police Sgt. Phil Keenan said.

Keenan said the investigation remains active and detectives are following leads

It seems that the perp would have to have been familiar with the area, given that it was placed in the rear of the property. The perp either owned the property, or knew that it was vacant.

Her age is two years off the range but height is within an inch.

She is from Carson and reportedly met her killer/s in Hermosa Beach which is not far from where the body was found. Her murderers said they dumped her somewhere rural and don't even remember which county but they could have lied. Maybe you forget if you're a serial killer and dump victims every day but otherwise I think that experiences like hiding a dead body would tend to stand out. Granted, if they had another victim they could have several.

I wonder how much about the style of garbage bag could tell investigators about the age of the remains. The remains were thought to be as old as 50 years when they were found, meaning they could have been put there in 1951, but plastic trash bags weren't very common then:

A lot of new garbage bags are printed in a very "digital" type of text with warnings about suffocation risks (white text on black bags or dark text on white kitchen bags.) I'm not sure if bags were printed with these warnings decades ago or if a printed warning wouldn't wear off the bag if it was buried for years, but I imagine it would have been stamped on the bags instead of being printed on, so maybe that could help date the bag. I hope that made sense.

Given that Cristopher Wilder's nationwide rampage took him through Redondo Beach/Torrance, it was quite reasonable to think that that this case might have a connection to your sister's case (or to Elizabeth Kenyon, Mary Opitz, or Rosario Gonzalez). (although IIRC, somewhere I saw a comment from you that you doubt that your sister's case is connected to Wilder).

But regardless, I doubt that Wilder was familiar enough with the area to choose that location for a dumping ground.

I just spoke with Daniel Machian of the LA County Coroner's office. He says that a DNA profile has been developed for this UID, but he is not sure whether or not it is in CODIS yet.

Just from the few places mentioned here, they are not very close.

Most of the places mentioned (Little Tokyo and Downtown LA) are about 25 miles from Redondo Beach. The LA Airport is fairly close, but I doubt that your sister would have any roles in the airport scenes.

I just spoke with Detective McMillan of Torrance PD, who is listed as the contact on the site. He is fairly new to the case, and is not sure if this comparison was made. But he said it sounded like it was worth looking into. He will look into it and let me know what he finds.

ETA: He just called me back and said that the other investigator told him that it had been checked out and ruled out.

I didn't ask, but according to Daniel Machian, they did have a DNA profile on the UID, although he did not know whether the profile was in CODIS.

It may be something like the fact that Carol had given birth and the UID had no evidence of prior pregnancy. (Although I don't know that to be true of the UID)

Although his other victims were young men, serial killer Patrick Kearney lived the Redondo Beach area. Known as the "Trash Bag Killer," he dumped many of his victims along the freeway or in the desert and often in bags. He also dismembered many of them, which might account for the lack of a skull in Jane Doe's case. I wonder if there could be a link between these cases?
