Our home is still standing but I know WAY too many people who have lost homes. The battle is still raging but with much better odds and we may even have rain this Thurs. Driving home from work is rough as I drive by the worst of it along the freeway. Post apocalyptic is the only way to describe the ruins left over and the half charred vineyards I pass. But I am very lucky.

My aunt and her husband and kids in Bear Creek were evacuated at 4 am PST. They're at her husband's elderly parent's house in Santa Cruz.

"9:17 p.m. State cuts red tape to aid recovery efforts: Gov. Jerry Brown issued an executive order Wednesday aimed at streamlining wildfire recovery efforts by cutting back on a number of regulations and fees. The executive order includes suspending planning and zoning requirements and state fees for mobile homes, extending the prohibition on price gouging and expediting hiring for recovery and emergency personnel.

8:52 p.m. Bear fire grows but firefighters increase containment: The Bear Fire burning in the Santa Cruz mountains grew slightly to 300 acres, but firefighters have managed to reach 15 percent containment by Wednesday night. Earlier estimates on Wednesday from Cal Fire put the blaze at 271 acres and 10 percent containment."

Firefighters expect full containment on Wine Country wildfires by Friday
http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/Another-firefighter-hurt-battling-Santa-Cruz-12287511.php

(I'm so happy to post this headline!)

"Firefighters have finally managed to dig, burn and bulldoze containment lines around nearly all the North Bay fires, and smiles were at last beginning to appear Wednesday on faces of the people holding the hoses and shovels.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, known as Cal Fire, said it now had a handle on the major fires that only days ago were raging wildly out of control as they cut multiple paths of death and destruction in the North Bay and beyond. The death toll went up by one Wednesday to 42.

“We were pretty successful getting good containment,” said Cal Fire Deputy Chief Bret Gouvea. “We stopped the forward progress (and) we have containment lines around those fires.”"

Stay safe, cvaldez!

"A hundred miles to the south, the Bear Fire that started in the Santa Cruz Mountains late Monday continued its moderate spread Wednesday after destroying at least four structures, injuring six firefighters, blackening more than 270 acres and causing residents in some 150 homes to evacuate.

Fire officials had to ground aerial attacks on the blaze for about 90 minutes Wednesday due to a rogue drone being flown illegally in the area. The Santa Cruz County Sheriff Office also said they arrested a suspected looter who broke into an evacuated home on Hidden Springs Lane and stole about $15,000 worth of jewelry and a bicycle. He was identified as Marlon Coy, 54, of Boulder Creek.

The steep, rugged terrain in the area has posed the greatest challenge and contributed to injuries to firefighters, said Angela Bernheisel, a Cal Fire spokeswoman. One firefighter who fell from about 30 feet Tuesday remained hospitalized and may need surgery to repair cuts to his face, she said. Another firefighter suffered second-degree burns to his hands early Wednesday and was being treated at a hospital, Bernheisel said.

The Bear Fire was 10 percent contained Wednesday, as firefighters went about the task of preventing the wildfire from spreading to homes in the Las Cumbres community, which have been evacuated."

California wildfires could leave behind toxic mess, health officials warn
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/califo...eave-behind-toxic-mess-health-official-warns/

""Most clients are saying, 'Why do I feel this in the throat?' And we're telling them, 'Well, it's obviously the air. It's the smoke.' There's a lot of bacteria now forming," said Red Cross volunteer Joe Apicelli."

"Scott Alonso with the Sonoma County Department of Public Health is urging people to stay inside, especially children and those with lung problems.

"And also, when you're driving, make sure your AC is on re-circulate," said Alonso. "Protecting yourself from that, so your air filters are doing all the work for you and they're not bringing in that outside air."

Alonso said the long-term effects of breathing in this air are still unknown. But to lessen the chances of developing a serious illness, he encouraged people to remain patient and not clean up their homes.

Instead, he urged residents in or near the fire zone to make an appointment with the public health department and allow the professionals to remove the hazardous waste.

"Don't clean up right now. It's not safe," said Alonso. "The toxic ash and the debris is harmful. We don't want you sifting through it. We don't want children in it. Do not touch it. Just keep track of what's there, and then we can get involved working with you to clear it out.""
