Port Alberni RCMP searching for Brandon Cairney - Port Alberni Valley News

Port Alberni RCMP are looking for Brandon Cairney, who hasn’t contacted family in two weeks. This is uncharacteristic for him, family members say. SUBMITTED PHOTO

''Port Alberni RCMP is searching for a high-risk missing person. Brandon Gabriel Cairney, 31, a Port Alberni resident, has not been seen for two weeks.

Cairney is a reclusive man who spends a lot of his time walking in and around the Alberni Valley by himself, says Port Alberni RCMP Cpl. Amelia Hayden. Cairney has been known to walk to Mt. Arrowsmith Regional Park, Nanaimo, China Creek Campground and Stamp Falls Provincial Park.''

“Brandon has a brain injury and is faced with challenges daily. He recently missed an appointment in town, which is highly unusual for him and his family hasn’t seen or heard from him in two weeks.

“We all want to make sure that Brandon is safe and are reaching out to the public to help us find him,” Hayden said.

Cairney is described as a Caucasian male, six feet (183 cm) tall, approximately 180 pounds (82 kg) with brown eyes and balding, short brown hair. He may either be clean-shaven or have a full beard.

Anyone who knows of Cairney’s whereabouts or who may have seen him walking on the highway or on a trail is asked to call the Port Alberni RCMP at 250-723-2424 or Alberni Valley Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).''

Excellent article written about the number of missing males in B.C:

‘Where do you start looking?’: Vulnerable men are missing on Vancouver Island, some for decades. Their families are seeking answers

‘Where do you start looking?’: Vulnerable men are missing on Vancouver Island, some for decades. Their families are seeking answers

This is a major red flag from the article:

"Shortly after Brandon vanished, his bank card was used two times for small purchases in communities within a 150-km stretch east of Vancouver: once at a corner store in Hope and a second time at another convenience store closer to the city.

The individual who used the cards has never been verified; security footage wasn’t clear enough to identify them, Mark said."

Brandon has been found alive 5 years after going missing. https://lm.facebook.com/l.php?u=htt...vaI-0enTHUI1IvMaB_epqTQy1YlwY8qiB6IKlTNZfviWg

Cairney was questioned by police after being found sleeping on a park bench in Burnaby but this is where what should be a happy ending, takes an unfortunate turn.
“So he is identified by his fingerprints after he is picked up and then, unfortunately, Brandon tells police and Border Services that he is an American citizen, he goes by a different name and says he’s not Brandon Cairney,” Palmer told CHEK News on Sunday.
In a surprising twist, the man whose fingerprints identify him as the same missing Brandon Cairney from Port Alberni, tells police that it’s not him.

Cairney had minor brushes with the law before he went missing which is why police have his fingerprints.

He had also suffered a major brain injury in a car accident that nearly killed him when he was

Cairney was featured in journalist Laura Palmer’s podcast Island Crime in Season 2: Gone Boys. Palmer featured a number of men missing from Vancouver Island, and Cairney’s story was one of them. Palmer broke the news on Sept. 24, 2022 that Cairney had been found.

“He insists he is not Brandon,” Mark Cairney wrote to Palmer. As of the podcast release date, Brandon Cairney had not contacted anyone back in Port Alberni. The family is struggling with the knowledge, according to Brandon’s uncle. His mother, Linda, told Palmer it was a shock to hear Brandon is alive, and difficult for her to comprehend why he is using a different name and not recognizing his Port Alberni family.

“We know he’s OK, but we still may never see him, and that brings up different emotions, of course,” she wrote to Palmer.

I'm so glad to know that Brandon has been found alive!

Hope I don't get in trouble for posting more of the same article, apologies if against TOS (mods plz edit if so thx). Port Alberni man missing for five years resurfaces, but denies he is Brandon Cairney – Williams Lake Tribune

"He explained that Brandon had been picked up by border services representatives in Burnaby, for reasons that haven’t been made clear. Brandon has apparently been living in the United States for the past five years under a different name."

So many questions. Living in the U.S? Where? How?! Did he have fake ID (how would he manage that and why)? I'm assuming there hadn't been any activity on Brandons accounts throughout his disappearance. How was he supporting himself?

IIRC he had been living independently on Vancouver Island prior to his disappearance. I hope we get more updates and that he's going to be ok :(

Almost exactly five years after his disappearance at age 31, the Island’s Brandon Cairney seems to have been found in Burnaby after apparently being in the US. But the identified person insists that he is not Cairney—a Port Albernian who was a high school star athlete but changed dramatically after a brain injury.

Brandon Cairney went missing in October 2017. It had been over 10 years at that point since he was in a car accident that nearly killed him and left him with a major brain injury.

Before the accident, Cairney had been a star athlete, playing basketball, high-level soccer, and competing in track & field. He also loved art and music.

After the accident, his emotions were magnified, and his short-term memory was affected. Due to the brain injury, he wasn’t able to hold down a job, he suffered from constant headaches, and would go for long walks to help him cope.

In October 2017, Brandon Gabriel Cairney was meant to make it into an appointment, but he was never seen or heard from again by his family.

In an updated podcast episode, Mark said RCMP told Brandon’s family he had been found in Burnaby sleeping on a park bench.

Burnaby RCMP confirmed with Daily Hive that the man reported missing in 2017 in Port Alberni was found Thursday, September 22, and was arrested on an outstanding warrant
