I wonder if they ever checked phone records..from Audreys land line phone.

I feel that she was expecting company when she was found, dead, in her garage with her coat on…and the dogs inside. And if that’s the case, there should be records of who she talked to that night.
No one to speak for Audrey….

Here's my question: How did the killer get into the garage/house?

Details I can vaguely recall (without searching the thread):

Audrey had sent an email to someone in her coffee group saying she would attend "Hell or high water". IIRC one of the dogs needed to see a veterinarian at some point in this timeline. Audrey had been fighting a cold and was avoiding people. P.K had a cake he'd intended to bring over and for whatever reason, dropped in at an unexpected/unscheduled time which is how/when Audrey was discovered.

Did Audrey smoke? I've always imagined AG going into the garage with her coat on so she could have a cigarette.

Wasn't there also a claim that someone heard dogs barking earlier that morning? Maybe I'm mixing up my threads?

    CANADA - Canada - Audrey Gleave, 73, Ancaster ON, 30 Dec 2010 #6

Thank you for the timeline!

I've always thought that the mailbox incident was related. The 27th to approx 11:30 a.m Dec 30th are shady areas. Did AG answer the phone the day of? Did AG send the "Amazing Grace" email? Don't worry, I will try to answer my own questions just thinking out loud.

What type of "discrepancies" were addressed in PK's polygraph, I wonder.
March 1 2020 rbbm.
Who killed Audrey Gleave?
''Early in the investigation, a detective told reporters Kinsman had "absolutely" been ruled out as a suspect, but to Kinsman's eyes that changed.

He understood why. While lacking any apparent motive, Gleave granted few people access to her home, and he was one of them.

He voluntarily took a lie detector (polygraph) test, and says police told him the results were "inconclusive" and that he had been "deceptive" in some of his answers.

He says he was "skeptical about the pseudoscience of polygraph tests" and the results confirmed his skepticism.

Kinsman stresses he doesn't want to be critical of investigators, but he went from wanting to help the police to feeling hurt when it seemed to him that detectives had narrowed their focus on him.

Detectives also questioned his wife, in February 2012.

"They were accusing my husband of doing this awful thing, that I know he could never ever do," she says.

Kinsman says police interviewed members of his immediate family and asked to take imprints from shoes belonging to family members, as though testing to see if he wore someone else's footwear on Gleave's property.

Police, aware that Kinsman is a devout Christian, asked him where he believes Gleave's soul rests. In heaven or hell? He found it an uncomfortable line of questioning.

"It's not an illegitimate question," he says now. "But you have to be OK with an open-ended answer. I mean nobody knows right? Certainly, Audrey's soul was not in my hands."

He says that when he used to visit Gleave they had conversations about faith, although he says she was not religious.

"Alex and I are strong believers, and there is nothing that would prohibit a plea out of desperation for salvation that would go unanswered … I know what reason tells me, and what I hope for."

He says police focused on apparent inconsistencies in his recollection of events, but the shock of seeing his friend's body, and the passage of time, blurred many details for him.

At one point, he said he had carried the cake for Gleave into the garage where he discovered the body, but later said he had left the domed-lid Tupperware in his car the whole time. He's now convinced he must have left the cake in the car.

After he was interviewed by police at the scene of the homicide he drove home and along with Alex ate the cake — a "Texas stollen" cinnamon and raisin coffee ring cake.''

What a compassionate, shocked Christian. Eats the cake, that he wanted to bring to his dear friend, who is lying there murdered, stretched out on the concrete floor, bleeding, with open eyes staring in terror, with her trousers burst. Her soul wasn't in his hands (to conduct it to hell or heaven), but her Christmas cake was and tasted good enough.

Yes.. that part just blows my mind.

Regarding the question of if she smoked?

Yes, according to this news report "While private was the word many people used to describe Gleave, Vanstone said she was many things: animal lover, someone who loved her smokes and candies, coffee groupie, bargain shopper, car-buff, funny and stubborn."
'That's so Audrey'

Just a thought - re: eating the cake. If he arrived there around 11 (before lunch) likely had to stay for many hours for questioning, etc. maybe even go to police station for prints...(speculation)...long day=hungry. I'm doing a study on overeating and the causes and often people stress eat. If he hadn't eaten all day and brings in a cake in to his home, I could see him mindless gorge on it even if he planned to eat something else. Stress eating, hunger solving, perhaps. Thoughtless. Not in his right mind. Comfort food.

Only because of the cake he entered AG's garage and then later ate part of "the evidence". - But okay, it isn't dramatic. only worth a little mention.

To me, there is a lot to be said about this cake.

First off, to me again, it seemed that the handyman was kind of balking/making fun of AG because she had given the recipe and had wanted it made exactly according to that recipe.. no room for experimenting with fun flavors, or whatever... likely boring for a certified chef. In other words, a plain jane cake.. was it really that big of a hit that you'd want to sit with your partner and eat the entire thing during one setting?

Secondly, yes, the delivery of that cake was the reasoning for the visit. Their Christmas get-together, so to speak. What did AG have to give to her friend when they presumably exchanged gifts, or was this just a one-way street wherein AG knew ahead of time that her friend would be baking a cake made to AG's specs, but AG had no plans to reciprocate the Christmas gift-giving spirit? But AG was ill around the time of Christmas. I believe she'd been sick 'before' Christmas, and their plans got postponed? Or was it instead that AG was trying to get out of that get-together altogether? How is it that AG was sick before Christmas, but then fine to spend a meal with her other good friend, at her friend's house, I believe it was said with the friend's family as well? But then too sick again to have her get-together with the handyman friend? And also not sick enough to avoid giving her veterinarian friend a hug when she saw him, reportedly during same time period, even though it seemed AG was somewhat of a germiphobe?

When exactly was this special-order cake prepared/baked? How many days had it sat before it was to be gifted to AG, and ultimately eaten?

The friend arrives to the house with the purpose of giving this cake, cake in hand, while he presses the numbers on the garage pad (reportedly known only to AG and himself), ... and then discovers her body splayed in a pose on the floor, dead. That would sure be enough for me to drop the cake!? But then later, the story changes to that he did not have the cake in hand, and had instead left it in his car. Which is more accurate? The early version of the story, when memory is the freshest? Or the later version, when perhaps memories become clouded? Perhaps police had wondered how he'd managed to keep hold of the cake when caught offguard at the sight of his friend's corpse? After thinking on it, perhaps the memory changed to having left it in the car?

Police very early on, became way too focused on the 'weird guy' who had been 'living' nearby (but still, from memory, I believe it was about 6 miles away?), so perhaps they didn't do all the checks and balances they should have at the beginning, ie by asking to see the cake, etc. As fromGermany has alluded to, if the entire cake was eaten right away after leaving the crimescene with it, was there any evidence at all that the cake actually existed?

The thing Claroon mentioned, about stress-eating... for sure.. I get that. Eat away! But this wasn't just simply a matter of 'eating'. This was eating the very thing that was so highly connected to his good friend of a few years. Eating a thing that couldn't possibly help but invoke memories of everything-Audrey, and everything horrible about that fateful time. I'd love to hear the perspective of a forensic psychologist/psychiatrist to know their thoughts on the immediate and total consumption of that memory-inducing cake. I might suspect that such a cake may be sort of memorialized, not wanting to eat it, as it was the last memory of AG, and it might bring highly charged emotions. Or I might equally suspect that such a cake might be completely discarded, as it was the thing of a most horrible, nightmarish memory that one could only want to forget. But to eat the whole dang thing in one sitting as it has been portrayed? Yes, I'd love to hear professional thoughts on that. imo.

(What was stopping the couple from putting this cake named after Audrey onto their menu, since it was an independent bakery/cafe, they could create and name whatever they wanted?)

After he was interviewed by police at the scene of the homicide he drove home and along with Alex ate the cake — a "Texas stollen" cinnamon and raisin coffee ring cake.

The couple would like to put a similar dish on their café menu at Saving Thyme and name it after Audrey."

"He says police focused on apparent inconsistencies in his recollection of events, but the shock of seeing his friend's body, and the passage of time, blurred many details for him.

At one point, he said he had carried the cake for Gleave into the garage where he discovered the body, but later said he had left the domed-lid Tupperware in his car the whole time. He's now convinced he must have left the cake in the car.

:from the handyman friend's WS post:

So as early as the beginning of November, she told me she didn't want me to purchase anything for her for Christmas, but only to make this cake for her (because, as she often lamented, she was too lazy to make it herself). With respect to the comments about Audrey being a foodie and the surprise that she would let someone make food for her, I think this can be answered by understanding Audrey's approach to cooking/baking. She was a firm believer in scientific method and repeatability. Her recipes had painstaking detail and permitted no creativity whatsoever. In fact, she despised recipes that left room for the cook's personality. This is why she didn't have any problem asking Alex and I to make the cake for her because had "tried me out" before - asking me to make a spaghetti sauce that she loved to death - and she found that I could reliably follow the recipes she gave me. This hopefully also addresses my bringing the cake despite the fact that she was sick. Because it was such a long-planned thing, it didn't even register with me that she wouldn't be able to eat it until she was better.

@ dotr (#523)
- Some quick info about the scheduling of time to drop off the cake. I had originally planned to visit AG on Christmas day but she had emailed me a day or two prior to call it off because she was so sick. So, on Christmas day I called her to check in and that's when we set the definite time to get together around 10am on Thursday for me to drop it off.

Audrey did tell me when she gave me the code that I was the only person in the world to have it other than herself and she insisted that I not write it down anywhere and only commit it to memory. She gave it to me - she said - in case I ever needed to come while she was out and get tools out of the garage to work.

They were so creeped out and shocked and sad that they ate the whole cake the very same day he found Audrey's violently murdered, posed body? Did LE even see the cake, the only "reason" Kinsman says he stopped by? And why would he have used the code to let himself in if he thought she was there? Just wondering here.

Did the cake ever actually exist?

How nice after that long detailed story of recipes and how important the cake was and all that, they just shoveled it into their mouths on the way home! No taking it home and having a cup of coffee to help "process" everything? PK really had the stomach to eat that thing after seeing his dead friends body on the garage floor like that? Gross!

Imo this cake sounds like it wasn't as important as some would have others believe. I mean... come on

What, if the cake was feeded to the dogs? Though police may have seen the cake at a certain point on the day, when PK reported AG to be dead.

I could definitely see someone slipping a sedative into a piece of cake and feeding it to a dog to get it out of the way but not in this particular scenario/case.

One thing I'll say about this cake: If it was anything like the coffee ring cake that Tim Hortons used to sell then I can understand why it was a big deal. Anyone who remembers that cake knows it was addictive! Am I the only one who recalls it?

The retelling of the recipe seems to have a number of unnecessary and fussy details IMHO. Was Audrey really that particular?

I suppose PK was letting himself in because AG wasn't answering?

But what if she was in the bath or on the toilet? He was okay walking in on her like that? I also find it odd that two people ate an entire cake at one sitting, even a "coffee cake".

Of course no one can help it if they need to use the bathroom however... PK states that he phoned ahead of time, that this visit had been arranged and was rescheduled from a previous date. Audrey apparently was expecting this visit. Now I'm wondering if there were any indications of AG preparing for company? For example, a recently washed coffee or tea pot? Plates and napkins set out on the counter? Anything like that to indicate Audrey was expecting guests?

Audrey gave PK the pass code for the garage. Assuming PK has let himself in previously under similar circumstances or as a matter of convenience while doing repairs etc. By the time PK would get through the garage and into the house, I'm guessing should be enough time to be out of the bathroom. If Audrey were expecting PK, I don't know why she would be in the bath or shower.

It's totally possible to eat an entire cake for sure but under the circumstances and given the scenario it sounds absurd IMO. All I can imagine is PK driving with one hand and eating coffee cake with the other and it's ridiculous.

Serious question: Did LE look for cake crumbs? Wouldn't it be kind of funny if there were legitimate crumbs logged into evidence somewhere?

Audrey was found in her garage; PK, per his report, didn't enter her house the day he found her in the garage. Here's what I remember from previous discussions on Audrey's thread here (and the now-defunct Unsolved Canada site):
IIRC: While PK was one of the very few people ever to have been inside Audrey's home in recent years, they often had their visits on a bench outside. (I assume he was inside her house on rare occasion for the odd jobs she likely asked him to do.) Audrey by several accounts was a very private person (and some people intimated she was a bit of a hoarder; I don't know if that has been corroborated) and so very few people, even folks in her circle, were invited inside the house. PK had the garage code at least so he could access tools and things (and maybe enter her home? I'm not sure) when Audrey was not home.
I recall that several reports indicated that Audrey was a late-night owl -- and a smoker; she smoked in her garage including in winter with her winter coat on. There was a lot of speculation at the time of her death that she may have gone to the garage for a smoke when she was attacked there. (That's only one theory, of course.)
For my part, I don't find it surprising that a whole cake could be eaten in one sitting (especially if the eaters are in shock from the events by which the cake remained in their possession).
Like some other posters, I always wonder if there could be links between Audrey's murder and Sonia Varaschin's. Both remain unsolved.
I try to remain hopeful that new info/evidence/technology will lead to justice soon; it's great that folks here are trying to keep Audrey's case active. Sadly, she doesn't have family to lead that fight for her.

That’s what is the saddest, Audrey doesn’t have family to fight for justice.
I’d like to know what happened when PK phoned to say he was on his way…no answer? But he came anyways?
With or without cake in hand when he went to the door? That part isn’t even clear. If I was delivering a cake..I certainly wouldn’t take two trips to the door in winter…I would go to the door with the cake in hand, since that was the plan, bring a cake.
And..since Audrey was such a loner…who’s to say how much money was stashed in her house?
I don’t think Police will ever know that answer..but I hope they followed paper trails of POI’s.

Excuse this post as it's kind of a lot...

Did PK actually speak to Audrey that morning of December 30th? Could PK "fake" it and say he called when in truth, the phone just rang? Was Audrey even alive at that point in order to answer the phone?

How would someone know when to strike? Did she have a set time for a "before bed cigarette"? How would anyone know she was out there?

Just because PK had the passcode for the garage door doesn't mean he had the ability/authority to enter AGs' home.Wonder what the door/lock setup was like between the garage and the home? Anyone know?

Figuring out the "why" would probably help reveal the "who". Is it possible that there was more than one person involved?? IIRC we discussed the possibility of formulas or some kind of patent as potential motive, yes/no? It was something about research that Audrey had done in her past or something that her and P.K had in common? I forget the details now.

For all we know, LE could have their eye on someone but maybe are lacking the physical proof, solid evidence to hold against someone. Due to the nature of what happened to Audrey, it makes me wonder if that person hasn't either done a similar act before or since.

Why would someone want to kill Audrey Gleave? Doesn't appear to be about money. Someone smashed her mailbox within 1 month prior to her murder. Do we know if Audreys' was the only one? I'd take that personally 1000%. In fact, they mention this kind of thing when talking about stalking. Damage to property is in the top 5 things that stalkers do.

What could have transpired that would cause someone to lash out in such a way? Could there have been some indication of Audrey having words with someone in the days/weeks leading up to her death? Above and beyond what I would call passive aggressive but possibly a hint at the guilty persons' personality? Not even a ripple on the surface and then one fatal strike?

The attack and murder comes across quite nasty. Whoever did it took a souvenir too, let's not forget that. Even if it was meant for some kind of "effect" (Idk, say maybe someone trying to stage or make it look more brutal or something) that still speaks to the mind of whoever did it, that they decided to take that extra step.

Because here is another thing: Isn't it quite specific to take a part of/something from the victim? This is not something that all killers do. I don't know the difference between signatures, M.O, motive, patterns etc but it seems that there are levels and degrees. IMHO there's a difference between a "trophy" and a souvenir. No matter what was taken or removed my point is that this isn't exactly a run of the mill kind of thing. If Audreys' killer has done this before or since, would they do something similar?
