"June 19, 2014 7:01PM EDT

HALIFAX -- Five children aged 10 and under were rescued by police following a national child pornography investigation that targeted alleged sex offenders and resulted in hundreds of charges, the RCMP said Thursday.

Officers released the results of a four-month investigation into child exploitation that reached into every province, announcing in Halifax that more than 150 people have been arrested or are under investigation.

Sgt. Michael Petrilli said almost two million images and videos have been seized, with many involving infants and toddlers.

"I cannot stress enough what these images are and what they are not," he said at a new conference where he was flanked by about a dozen officers from 40 police agencies involved in the operation.

"These images are not simply children having a bubble bath. They are clearly children that are in a situation where they are being sexually assaulted."

Investigators said two of the children who have been rescued are from British Columbia, and the other three are from Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick."

"Three from Newfoundland, eight more investigations ongoing

In six months the unit responsible for investigating child exploitation cases in the province has surpassed the number it investigated in 2013, police officers told a news conference Thursday.

RCMP Supt. William Malone (left) and RNC Staff-Sgt. Joseph Gullage outline details of an investigation and arrests involving child pornography Thursday at the RNC’s St John’s headquarters.

“Last year we had 49 active investigations. So far this year we have 50 active investigations,” said Staff Sgt. Joe Gullage of the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU) Newfoundland and Labrador.

“So we are seeing an increase, and it’s a national concern. It’s something every province is concerned about."

"Malone said the ages of offenders and where they live don’t reveal any type of profile.

“It crosses all economic strata, all economic lines. An offender can be of any age. There are no hard and fast rules of the types of individuals. They are business people, in jobs you never know until you get on their computers,” he said.

“These individuals think they can do this kind of thing unabated, but they will get caught. It’s only a matter of time,” said Malone".

    Wonderful news!!!!!

I wish operations like this had ten times the resources allotted to them.

Let's hope they are able to go on and save many more children from these monsters.

" It’s possible the investigation could move beyond Canada if it’s found the material was sourced from or shared by people in other countries through Interpol or other police agencies.

“I would be shocked if there are not some international investigations stemming from arrests here in Canada,” said Sgt. Darren Parisien, an RCMP member from Saskatoon who worked on the investigation.

He said most of the investigations resulted from police identifying possible offenders online, rather than receiving a complaint. That can involve an officer posing as a child or someone trying to acquire child porn."

“The police are working very well together throughout the country, throughout the world. We will find you, you will be arrested and you will be charged,” said RCMP Sgt. Rob Vermeulen.

Officers announced Thursday in Halifax that police have seized almost two million images and videos, many involving infants and toddlers. They said the five children from Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and B.C. knew their alleged abusers"

Interesting series of articles, this one from LE's point of view working on these cases.
    An example..
    http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/faq-child-porn-arrests-in-investigators-own-words-1.2680640

    "Who are these people?

"Just think about 10 houses that are around your home. In one of those 10 houses is the typical offender, which is a male between the ages of 15 and 80. The only commonality that they have are two things, that they're male and they have access to the internet. Other than that, it's every aspect of society. You have young and old, you have people who are wealthy or poor and you have people who are educated and uneducated."

Is anyone who looks at these types of photos likely to become an offender?

"There are two categories of people — those who are repulsed by these images and those who are excited. And those who are excited about it will continue to go down that road until they have the opportunity to offend against that child. I have no doubt every single person who looks at child pornography is going to be a hands-on offender if given the opportunity."

"Next week on CBC's The National

CBC News was given unprecedented access to an online child exploitation investigation in Moncton, N.B. You can see Alison Crawford's in-depth report on The National on Monday, June 23."

I'm glad that they are saving children and taking out the bad guys. I hope all of the perps go to jail for the rest of their lives.
