Canada - Five slain at Brentwood house party, Calgary, 15 April 2014 *Insanity*

I've been watching and hoping this case would move forward, but looks like another delay.

ciao

From your link:

he understands the legal ramifications but there is concern whether his mental health makes him not responsible

"The court is expected to hear whether or not he can be held criminally responsible for his actions if convicted on Thursday, but learned that the report was not ready for release."

Eta. I'm so curious about the motive. Jmo

ciao

I don't think there was a motive, I think he's severely mentally ill and had an episode, perhaps triggered by stress of exams? JMO

Reminds me a bit of the Greyhound Bus killing and Vincent Li...no motive, just a trigger that caused an episode. Apparently the trigger was a small incident between Tim McLean and Vincent Li at a rest stop. Li was trying to speak to a young girl who was not interested in conversing with him while having cigarettes. Tim McLean stepped in and told Li that she wasn't interested in being bothered (or something to that effect...it was a short news footage that reported this...unfortunately I can't find it). It was after this rest stop that Li changed seats on the bus and sat by McLean...the rest is history....so something as simple as a perceived slight, the stress of exams, etc could trigger a mental illness episode should it be discovered that mental illness does indeed exist for Matthew DeGrood.

"The Crown and defence have asked the judge to put a publication ban on the information, arguing it could be prejudicial at trial.

The judge granted an interim ban on the details until Oct. 7 to allow media time to argue against the move."

Ok -- dear Judge allow the publication ban until Oct 7 but then televise the trial so that we can all see for ourselves how well the justice system functions.

Well that is a little frustrating :(
I have to admit that I am extremely curious about the reasons why this happened.

I think it is insulting to think that publication of the trial is going to taint any possibility of a fair trial.
Perhaps the court should act in a timely fashion - schedule X amount of time for the trial and get on with it. MOO

I agree newone.....I do not understand our justice system and do not hold much faith in it anymore. I mean we have people who dismember their best friends doing less than 8 years. Then we have others in prison for life on less charges. So I just do not know anymore :(

Matthew de Grood, 24, goes on trial Monday in what is the city’s worst mass killing...

While the trial may bring closure for some, for the victims’ families it will lay bare the brutal details of their children’s deaths... Prosecutors and the investigating officers have met with the families to prepare them. Wiberg said it is one of the most difficult cases he’s had in his 32-year career...

Scholarships in honour of Lawrence, Hunter and Segura, all University of Calgary students, were awarded for the first time on the second anniversary of their deaths.
