Man denies murder of 13-year-old girl from Burnaby, B.C.

A man accused of the first-degree murder of a Burnaby, B.C., teenager six years ago repeatedly denied killing the girl as his trial started.

Ibrahim Ali pleaded not guilty and told the jury through an interpreter that he “did not kill <name redacted>”

4/4/23 Wednesday, Trial Day 1: The jury trial of Ali began Wednesday in the Supreme Court of British Columbia. Ali entered a plea of not guilty to the crime in court Wednesday morning. The B.C. Crown Prosecution Service informed CBC on Wednesday a publication ban had been placed on the girl's name. When asked for his plea in front of a B.C. Supreme Court jury, Ibrahim Ali said three times through a Kurdish-speaking interpreter that he "did not'' kill the 13-year-old girl.\
The judge, in his opening remarks to the jury, reminded them of their commitment to not showing a bias against a Muslim Kurdish man from the Middle East. On Thursday, the Crown is expected to make its opening arguments to the jury & introduce its first witness.
Trial continues on Thursday, 4/6/23.

...the judge, in his opening remarks to the jury, reminded them of their commitment to not showing a bias against a Muslim Kurdish man from the Middle East.

"Our biases about personal characteristics such as race or gender, whether we realize it or not, can affect how we believe or disbelieve things we see or are told or how we react to those things," said Bernard.

"You must make a conscious effort to resist and to help other jurors resist jumping to conclusions based, for example, on race, ethnicity, religion or gender."

Live Updates: Day two of trial for Syrian national accused of killing 13-year-old

Apr. 5, 2023
The trial of Syrian refugee Ibrahim Ali began yesterday nearly six years after the death of <a 13 y.o. girl> in Burnaby, B.C. Ali is facing a first-degree murder charge for the death of the young girl. He had only been in Canada for approximately three months before he is alleged to have killed Shen.

Justice Bernard: This morning as you will see Mr. Ali is not present and we can’t proceed without his presence.

Justice explains that due to the holiday we will have to wait until Tuesday.

Jury is dismissed and the matter is adjourned until Tuesday, [4/11/23] 10am.

To a Mod - can I use her initials?

We prefer "13 y.o. girl" or "13 y.o. victim", but I don't see a big issue with her initials. The worst that would ever happen is we would be asked to change it and given WS is in the US, that would probably never happen.

Not sure what all the judge took into consideration when issuing that particular Order at this point in time given that she is deceased and her name has in the media for the past 6 years. They don't usually issue a pub ban in those situations but judges rule.

Go with either initials or our suggestion .. whichever is easiest for you.

Have a conflict here... (and there is nothing I can do about the headline with her name on it)....

per this article dated 4/5/23:

The trial is expected to resume Thursday for opening statements.

Now wondering if it will begin Tuesday or Thursday....

4/11/23 Tuesday, Trial Day 2: No info or articles available. Trial continues on 4/12/23.

Looks like they did not start on Tuesday... from the article posted above ^^

However, on Thursday they were called into the courtroom and notified by Bernard that Ali would not be present before being asked to return Tuesday.

But when the group of 14 was called in, they were once again sent home.

“I again begin by apologizing for keeping you waiting this morning,” Bernard told them.

“I can't explain why, other than – despite efforts to keep this matter moving forward – things have arisen that have to be dealt with in your absence,” Bernard continued.
[......]
The jury has been instructed to return Thursday afternoon.

:(

A trial has heard that a 13-year-old girl from Burnaby, B.C., was passing through a neighbourhood park when she was dragged into the forest, sexually assaulted and strangled.

In an opening statement at B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver in the trial of Ibrahim Ali, Crown attorney [I.K.] told the jury the trial will hear evidence that will show the murder was random, but DNA evidence proves Ali sexually assaulted the girl.
