Canada - Ibrahim Ali, accused of killing girl, 13, Burnaby, BC, 18 July 2017

Got this article in my alerts - dated 9/5/23 - and in the article it mentions Tuesday, so I am going to "assume" that this IS for that date - witnesses, etc. BUT! I thought the mother of the victim already testified - maybe she has been on the stand the last few days??!!

anyway - here's the article

Sept. 5, 2023
The mother of a young teen girl killed six years ago told a British Columbia Supreme Court jury she regrets allowing the girl to stay home alone the day she went missing.
[.....]
“I also very much regret that I did not cause her to go with me, so much so that I lost her,” the mother told the jury through the interpreter on Tuesday.
[.....]
The defence has not yet told the jury its theory of events.

So - I shall post this...

I don't think the cross-examination would have taken multiple full days. I'm thinking maybe that ill juror was out for a few days and they just resumed yesterday, after the Labour Day long-weekend. It's frustrating that reporting has been so scarce.

Oh - do Canadians celebrate Labor day? And you could be right. I guess I have to wait for another article....

Sept. 14, 2023

An RCMP expert testifying at Ibrahim Ali's murder trial says she's never seen a DNA match as close as the one between the suspect and samples found on his alleged victim — except for DNA matches between identical twins.

Forensic biologist Christine Crossman says police investigators were very thorough in their collection and testing of genetic samples from the body of the 13-year-old girl, whose identity is protected by a publication ban.
[.....]
Crossman told the B.C. Supreme Court on Wednesday that police obtained a "cast-off'' DNA sample from Ali in the form of a discarded cigarette butt in August 2018, matching it to an unknown male's genetic material found on the girl's body.

The match led to the police getting a warrant to formally obtain a sample from Ali, which again matched DNA from the body that was found in Burnaby's Central Park.

The defence has not yet revealed its theory of events to the jury.

A defence lawyer at the Ibrahim Ali murder trial in British Columbia Supreme Court has raised the possibility that the person whose DNA was found inside the victim may not be the one who killed the teenager.

Kevin McCullough has finished cross-examining forensic biologist Christine Crossman, focusing on the fact Ali’s genetic profile only matched samples found in the young teen girl’s vaginal and anal areas.

The defence has not yet formally presented its theory of events in the case. But on Friday, McCullough questioned the implications of some genetic evidence, including an oral swab of the deceased girl that found no trace of his client’s DNA.

He raised the scenario of Ali and the girl having “engaged in oral sex,” and the girl then eating or drinking something. This would have reduced the chances of Ali’s DNA being found in an oral swab, he suggested.

“Yes, certainly, eating or drinking could reduce any foreign DNA in the oral cavity,” Crossman said.

The Crown is expected to present a new witness on Monday.

I know he's just doing his job but the suggestion is ridiculous and disrespectful to the young victim and her family.

My goodness!

The Ibrahim Ali murder trial was interrupted Tuesday when the accused apparently fell asleep with a suit jacket over his head and face during testimony from a sexual assault expert.
...
“You’ve heard Mr. Ali’s not feeling well,” [the defence lawyer] said. “He’s now covered his head and appears to be sleeping. Can we have some time? You’ve heard that he has a headache.”
...
The trial was later adjourned until 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Regarding what happened in court on Monday:

A sexual assault expert will have to wait till Tuesday to find out if she’ll be allowed to give her opinion on whether injuries to a girl found dead in a Burnaby park six years ago “appeared to be more consistent with consensual or non-consensual sexual activity.”

Dr. Tracy Pickett, the director of B.C. Women's Hospital sexual assault service, took the witness stand at the trial of Ibrahim Ali in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver Monday.

''Let sleeping dogs lie" imo.

At about 3:20 p.m. Wednesday, the jury was called into court and told to return Thursday morning.

[The judge] told them he had spent most of the afternoon “dealing with the matter at hand, which is that Mr. Ali isn’t feeling well enough to proceed.”

The trial was originally scheduled to begin on April 5 and wrap up at the end of June but may now continue into December.
