Until my family or friends can identify me, you can call me Bret Stone.

On September 5, 2001, six days before the tragedy of 9/11, someone found me deceased in a wooded area near a cross country ski trail. Specifically, I was at Deep River, Ontario, on a bench in an outhouse, in a wooded rest area of cross country ski trail, in the Laurentian Hills.

It appears I had been there a couple of day before they found me. They say there was no trauma found to the body. So I guess I wasn't shot, or hurt that way. I didn't hear any findings on drugs or anything that could have been in the blood system.

I'm a male Caucasian. Estimated to be about 28 to 40
years of age. I was about 5'3 to 5'4, slim build with brown
hair. I had normal teeth with good dental hygiene.
My glasses were blue and pictures are provided

Plus my Eyeglasses that are for a near-sighted person and are described as follows:

Frame is "Koh Sakai"Model # is " KS9365"Colour is " 6CPR"Size is " 46-23-145" Right lens prescription is "2.50 -1.75 X 182"Left lens prescription is " 3.50 -1.00 X 008" There is a reflective coating on the lens which is said to be expensive.

One might wonder with so many personal effects and my detailed glasses why can't they identify me? It seems like I had plenty of travels. Don't the hotel's remember me? How about the airlines, can't the flight roster provide a list of names that can be narrowed down to identify who is missing?

Doctors, can you help police solve this mystery?

The Ontario Provincial Police are asking doctors for their help
in identifying this John Doe in the Deep River, Ontario, area.

Ontario’s Missing Persons Unidentified Bodies Unit hopes physicians may recognize man found dead in outhouse

“In a lot of these instances (where people go missing), there are a lot of mental issues or other issues where the person has sought psychiatric help,” said Sgt. Lafleur. “We have so many people calling in saying, ‘My son has gone missing, he is bipolar,’ or has diagnosed schizophrenia, we thought maybe some doctor would remember seeing them at some point.”

“Especially those (physicians) who see individuals with emotional disturbances, (seeing the case) may twig someone’s memory that this person was in to see them,”

Another thought: I wonder if our UID was a birdwatcher? Costa Rica is known for that and so is Algonquin Park as it's a good spot for boreal birds, which are not found in too many places in the US.

Yes, that looks like a very close match to me.

I'm trying to remember there was something odd about Gelb's disappearance, but I can't find any local news articles from the time to jog my memory. I know that he wasn't in the news for long, on account of 9/11, but I was sure there were a few things. But the archives are turning up blank.

Thanks for finding that. I knew I remembered something about his disappearance. I sent an email to My Fox Boston asking if they have an archive for older articles. The currently online information only goes back to 2009, apparently. Will let you know if I hear back from them.

Nice work guys! and I agree, that last photo looks a lot like the UID profile sketch (jaw line slightly different). Found a color photo of Jerald Gelb's front as well. Will post images together for comparisson purposes:

Am looking at pics of both Jerald Gelb and Emerson Dobroskay and the hair texture of our "Bret Stone" seems different, not as wavy and coarse. Also, i'm trying to picture Bret w/o the facial hair, because it could be a result of just a couple of days of not shaving, and not a regular feature of his appearance.

Charles Gay is quite a bit taller, Sable. Although I agree his facial features are very similar, he's 5'9, and "Bret" is only 5'3 to 5'4.

Hi, it's nice to find others interested in this case. I've been trying to help find this man's identity for years. I also thought about Gerald Gelb, the dates coinside for a possible match. Hope it pans out.
The area that Bret Stone was discovered in is very close to Chalk River Nuclear facility, which made me wonder if he was a scientist doing research?
Did you read about the rescent case of the Nuclear Scientist missing 41 year old Lachlan Cranswich Jan. 18 2010. This happened very close to the same location that Bret Stone was found. Maybe a possible connection somehow.

I e-mailed Karolyn Tontarski at Namus to see if Jerald Gelb had been looked at for this UID and got the following response:

Hi Carolyn – I put in a request for the comparison of these two cases a while ago with the Brookline Police Department. I’ve contacted the case investigator regarding the status of the comparison. I’ll let you know once I hear back. Thank you so much for your help! Karolyn


So we're not the only ones thinking these two could be the same person. Apparently Brookline PD didn't follow through or at least didn't report back about whatever they may have found out.

Did you read about the rescent case of the Nuclear Scientist missing 41 year old Lachlan Cranswich Jan. 18 2010. This happened very close to the same location that Bret Stone was found. Maybe a possible connection somehow.

Fits the description.
It says he was homeless, so possibly wouldn't have the money to travel, but who's to say that the travel bag found in "Bret Stone's" possession even belonged to him, he could have stolen it, or found it?
