Vanderhoof rallies around missing woman's family

The Mayor of Vanderhoof says his community is rallying around the family of Madison Scott, the 20-year-old woman who went missing this weekend after attending a bush party in Central B.C.

Police later found her truck and tent at a campsite at Hogsback Lake about 25 km south of Vanderhoof but a massive search by air, ground and water by 150 people failed to find any other trace of her.
RCMP called off the ground search for Scott on Monday, but friends and family say they're raising money to pay for a further helicopter search. A Facebook.com site has been set up to organize the effort.
The town's mayor Gerry Thiessen knows the Scott family, and says the disappearance has hit the town hard.

Madison Scott, 20, parked her truck and pitched her tent at the lake on Friday, as many did from her peer group. There was a party at the campsite that night, and she was there enjoying the spring fling. She somehow disappeared into the blur of revelry and twilight.
"She was last seen by those at the party around 3:00 a.m. Saturday morning," said RCMP spokesman Sgt. Rob Vermeulen. Her family called police when she did not return on Sunday afternoon as expected. A check with her friends indicated no contact after the last sighting of her at the party.

Scott is described as a Caucasian, five-foot-four, 170 pounds with ginger hair. She was last seen wearing a black T-shirt and blue-jean Capri pants.
"This is totally out of character," he said. "That comes from her family and her friends. They all informed us that she is not out of communication like this, so something is wrong."
The Citizen will be in close contact with searchers for the duration of their efforts

    POLICE SHIFT FOCUS
Interviews are the focus of police activity right now. Everyone is being spoken to who was at the parties Friday and Saturday nights at the Hogsback Lake campsite, anyone who was travelling in the vicinity, anyone who talked to Scott prior to her departure for the campsite on Friday, anyone who has the smallest piece of the puzzle.
"We must consider all possibilities," said RCMP provincial spokesman Sgt. Rob Vermeulen. "We are trying to piece together her movements, and that means needing to contact anyone who might be able to give us a clue."
The Mounties have added another layer of policing with the North District Major Crime Unit.
"It is better to call them in early than late, but no we do not have any indication that a crime has been committed," said Vermeulen.
"If they are part of the process right away, it helps. They are certainly great interviewers and have a lot of skills that can be useful right now. They are an excellent resource."
Scott was last seen at about 3 a.m. Saturday morning at a party at the Hogsback Lake forestry campsite

    Vanderhoof
Update: Police conduct search for 20 year old Madison Scott
    Share |
    2011-05-31 13:48 PDT

    File #2011-1508

Investigative efforts continue in the search for 20 year old Madison Scott from Vanderhoof. Madison was reported missing on Sunday May 29th when she failed to return from a party at Hogsback Lake about 25 km south of Vanderhoof.

Vanderhoof RCMP along with Search and Rescue Teams from Vanderhoof, Prince George, Burns Lake and Fort St. James conducted extensive air, water and ground searches on Sunday and all day Monday. Upwards of 150 volunteers searched, including horseback patrols, of the shorelines, walking and ATV trails and the logging roads in the area. Water areas were also explored with boats and side scanning sonar. Despite search efforts of the area, Madison is still missing.

At this time a physical search of the area has been suspended until new information can be obtained that would allow searchers to focus their efforts in another direction than already considered.

The investigation has determined that Madison attended a party on Friday night in an area well known and used by locals. The area is a former Forestry campsite, which also has a parking lot and boat launch area. Madison was last seen by those at the party around 3:00 a.m. Saturday. Police also know that another party was held there Saturday night. RCMP would like to speak to anyone who may have attended either party, was camping in the area or was in the area over the weekend for recreational purposes.

“We believe someone who was in the area this weekend may have seen Madison or even spoken to her, “says Sgt. Rob Vermeulen, spokesperson with E Division. “It is important that we determine what happened that night, what her plans were for Saturday and the rest of the weekend. We have conducted some interviews, but it is important that we speak to anyone and everyone who will help piece together the bigger picture. We still have many questions as does Madison’s family”.

Vanderhoof RCMP along with members of the North District Major Crime investigators continues to make this a priority investigation.

Madison Scott is described as 20 year old Caucasian, 5 foot 4, 170 lbs with ginger hair. She was last seen wearing a black t-shirt and blue jean Capri pants. She was driving an off-white early 1990s model F-150 pickup truck and had a two-tone blue tent; both were left at the site and are now in police custody.

Police are asking anyone who may have seen Madison or may know of her whereabouts to contact the Vanderhoof RCMP immediately at (250) 567-2222.

Prince George, B.C.- A helicopter continues to scour the Hogsback Lake area south of Vanderhoof for missing 20 year old Madison Scott. Family Friend, Dan Wingham, says it costs $800 dollars an hour to have the helicopter in the air, so an account has been set up at Integris Credit Union for donations.

I am so worried about Madison Scott. This location is in Highway of Tears territory. Please god let her be found safe.

Mounties have suspended the search for a missing 20-year-old woman from Vanderhoof, B.C. but hope partygoers present the night she disappeared will come forward and assist their investigation.

Madison Scott was last seen at around 3 a.m. Saturday morning at a party at Hogsback Lake, located about 25 kilometres south of Vanderhoof.

So far, none of the partygoers police have interviewed can recall seeing Scott leave.

Parents of missing local woman speak out

The parents of missing local woman Madison Scott issued a plea to the public last Tuesday to help them find their 20-year-old daughter.

    [snip]

During a press conference at the Omineca Safe Home, Madison’s parents Eldon and Dawn Scott described her as “a beautiful, caring and loving daughter, sister and friend.”

“She is a passionate 20-year-old young woman who loves sports and photography. She has a great sense of humour and she loves to socialize with family and friends,” said Dawn Scott.

    [snip]

He said that the RCMP has 14 investigators working on the 300 – 400 tasks generated by information they have received so far.

    [snip]

He added that investigators are still speaking to those who attended the parties at Hogsback Lake the weekend Madison went missing, and that there are still those who haven’t yet come forward.

“We don’t believe that we’ve made contact with everyone that was out there at this point so that’s what we’re looking for.

    [snip]

Although police confirmed her phone was active at around 7 a.m. on May 28, four hours after she was last seen, Vermeulen confirmed on Tuesday that it was not anything outgoing.

    Highway of Vanishing Women

There are few roads on earth more dramatically breathtaking than Canada's Highway 16. The lonely 837-mile stretch of asphalt slices east-west through British Columbia, winding its way through towering snow-capped peaks, bustling mill towns, and a remote wilderness that feels as if it hasn't been touched since the beginning of time.

It's against this ruggedly beautiful backdrop that people are disappearing, the most recent in late May, when 20-year-old Madison Scott vanished near what has come to be known as the Highway of Tears.
