The all-star playmaker, who wears No. 16 with the blue and white, was the victim of a carjacking at gunpoint on Monday night.
“It happened at the Cineplex theatre on The Queensway,” said a police source.
Toronto Police tweeted about a carjacking at The Queensway and Islington Ave. at 7:46 p.m., saying a man was robbed of a Black Range Rover by three suspects with the use of two handguns as well as a knife.''

Const. David Hopkinson said “the suspects have fled in the Range Rover.”

''According to a source, Marner was going to a movie with a friend when “the guys approached wearing masks and said they wanted the vehicle. Mitch said, ‘go ahead and take it.”’

Carjackings and muggings have been on the rise in recent times, as have car thefts. And the thieves have become extremely violent in their fleecing of the vehicles.''

''A day after Maple Leafs star Mitch Marner was robbed of his Range Rover at gunpoint outside an Etobicoke movie theatre, Toronto police said they have already seen more carjackings so far this year than they did in all of 2021.

“It just seems that this is a crime of opportunity, and the end game is profit,” Insp. Richard Harris of the holdup squad told reporters outside Toronto Police Headquarters Tuesday. “So whether it's a new trend that is believed to be something that's gonna make quick money, I'm gonna say and suggest that they stop. We will not stop.”

Harris said that so far this year Toronto police have responded to 60 carjackings, with the thieves usually targeting high-value vehicles. He said that compares to 59 carjackings in all of 2021.''

''Speaking with reporters, Harris said “every rock will be unturned” as police search for the perpetrators in this and other carjacking incidents.

“We’re actively working to establish any links and dedicated investigators, trust me when I tell you, are working on this feverishly and continue to review any and all evidence that we have so far,” he said.

So far this year, Toronto police have made 20 arrests in carjackings, with many of those suspects believed to have been involved in multiple incidents.

While Marner was not physically injured, Harris said other carjacking victims have been and that all of them deal with the psychological impacts of having been victimized regardless of physical injuries''

''Toronto police will announce several arrests made in response to a rash of carjacking incidents across the city.

Dubbed "Project ZigZag," police appear to have launched an investigation targeting carjackers in Toronto, who have been active in large numbers over the past two months.

Recent incidents involved weapons such as guns and knives, with up to six incidents occurring across the region on one night in May.''

One encounter involved Toronto Maple Leafs star Mitch Marner losing his Range Rover outside an Etobicoke movie theatre.

Insp. Richard Harris will speak outside Toronto police headquarters on College Street sometime around 11 a.m.''

''Uniformed and plain-clothes officers are patrolling “hot spot” areas in the city — including the Yonge Street corridor — and the service has launched a “carjacking team” solely dedicated to investigating the crime.

Some of the carjackings involved gunpoint robberies of drivers in parking garages and city intersections — even in broad daylight, according to police.

In May, thieves took off in Toronto Maple Leafs star winger Mitch Marner’s black Range Rover outside the Queensway movie theatre in Etobicoke. No arrests have been made in that case.

Toronto police released the names of several people facing multiple carjacking-related robbery charges, including Hamzah Hussein, 18, who was allegedly one of two men involved in the June 19, 2022, gunpoint robbery of a woman as she walked to her car in the Albion Road and Islington Avenue area.''

''It’s not just Mitch Marner—carjackings are surging citywide. From January to May of this year, the city experienced 69 of these violent car robberies, compared to 64 in all of 2021. That comes on the heels of a steady increase in overall car thefts in recent years, from 3,282 in 2015 to 6,508 in 2021.''

''We’re starting to see a lot of physical force being used and more weapons involved. Some victims, unfortunately, are experiencing some sort of injury. Thankfully, no one has had to do any lengthy stays in the hospital, but as I’ve said before, the psychological trauma is just as concerning.

Do we know why these crimes have skyrocketed? Is this a spate of random one-offs, or is there an organized-crime element?
There’s definitely greater sophistication, and it leads us to believe organized crime is involved. We can attribute a big chunk of these robberies to the same persons or groups of people.''

No doubt it took robbing a hockey hero to get the police to put this thieving business to an end. Otherwise, folks who have their vehicles stolen are not given any police time. Vehicles are insured. Sorry for the inconvenience.

We had a vehicle stolen in TO. The thieves even used it and while on their drive, they went to an ATM for cash and left the receipt in the vehicle. You'd think that an ATM receipt would be very helpful for investigation purposes, with cameras at the ATMs, right? Nope. There was no investigation at all. Your vehicle was completely trashed, but recovered, so what's the problem?

''Police have arrested two suspects and issued a warrant for two others as they continue to investigate a dramatic spike in carjackings in Toronto, with 182 incidents so far this year.''

''Harris said the carjackings are targeting both high-end and average vehicles for resale purposes and criminal activity.

“Any high-end vehicle, Mercedes, BMWs, we're seeing Porsche, Lamborghinis...And then when we're saying the not so high-end vehicles, we're seeing a lot of Honda's, we're seeing a lot of Toyota’s, sedans. There's no rhyme or reason with respect to the lower-end vehicles,” Harris said.''

Maple Leafs star Mitch Marner says that the arrest of two suspects who allegedly stole his Range Rover at gunpoint last May comes as a “great relief" and will hopefully allow him to move on from the “scary” incident once and for all.
Marner made the comment to reporters at a Leafs practice on Friday just hours after police confirmed that they had made arrests in two carjacking investigations in Etobicoke in the spring, including one outside a movie theatre near Islington Avenue and the Queensway involving Marner.'

“I gave my thanks to them (the investigators) and my gratitude and appreciation because it wasn’t easy,” he said. “There wasn’t many cameras or anything around. The sun was going down, so it was tough to see anything. But they did a great job just sticking with it and getting the job done. I really appreciate the hard work they put in.”

The gunpoint robbery involving one of the Leafs biggest stars this spring came amid a rash of violent vehicle thefts across Toronto.

It was followed just a few days later by three armed carjackings that were committed across the city over a two-hour span.

A week later there was another six overnight carjackings reported across the GTA, including one where a man was pistol-whipped.''
