CBC:
Amber Hildebrandt reports: "The officer gives Williams a moment to think about things and asks if he's concerned about anything. In a more direct way the officer says, 'This is a significant investigation.' When asked whether there is any contact with the four victims that Williams might be concerned about his wife knowing, he replies, 'Absolutely not.'"

CBC:
Amber Hildebrandt reports: "The officer asks if Williams has ever been in Laurie Massicotte's house. Williams says no. The officer then asks if Williams understands how DNA works. Williams says yes and the officer asks again if Williams has been inside Massicotte's home. He says no."

CBC:
Amber Hildebrandt reports: "The officer asks if Williams knows Jessica Lloyd. He responds, 'I didn't even know her name til I heard about it on the news.' The officer turns his questions to the type of tires on Williams' SUV."

This is the first trial I have followed on WS. The "live" streaming from the courtroom by media via blackberry is a first???

Will this be a precedent for other trials and "real time" reporting?

Specifically thinking of Tori.

10:14 smithjoanna: It was actually 17:41 at that moment, not 17:48. Now it's at 17:44 (We've been told he "breaks" around 19:30)

10:17 smithjoanna: RW says he drove back to Tweed that evening. "I kissed my wife goodbye and headed back to Tweed, to go to work the next day."

When asked, Williams tells Smyth that he has Toyo tires on his SUV. These are the second version of those tires on his vehicle. They were put on in the fall. The dealership in Ottawa says these tires are very popular for Pathfinders, he points out.

[10:10 AM]

Smyth says that sometimes when people get stopped in a vehicle canvas about a crime, they get nervous and say things they didn’t mean. He says if Williams did that when he was stoppped last week regarding the disappearance of Lloyd, that he shouldn’t feel bound to that.

Steadily, the colonel's on-screen body language becomes more and more telling. He shifts in his chair, his arms still tightly folded. By now it must be evident to him that the police have got him squarely in their sights.

The Bandido trial was live streaming from a courtroom also.

As for the Stafford case, I'm not sure as there is a publication ban in place for at least TLM (and no doubt she will be testifying at MR's trial). - JMO

CBC:
Amber Hildebrandt reports: "Smyth asks Williams where he was the day Comeau went missing. Williams says he was having dinner with his wife, but can't quite remember where. The officer presses him saying, 'You see what I'm getting at, right? That kind of detail can be very helpful to us.' Williams tells Smyth he 'kissed my wife goodbye and headed back to Tweed.'"

Lianne Elliott:
Det. Insp. Chris Nicholas, the lead OPP investigator on the case, has praised Det. Sgt. Jim Smyth's work conducting the interview.

"It was an excellent piece of police work," he told CBC News before the proceedings got underway today. "It's one of the best interviews I've ever seen. It's a smart man being outsmarted by a smarter man."

CBC - Amber Hildebrandt reports:

"Crown attorney Lee Burgess said that he has struggled to determine what information, what evidence to put before the court.

He has spent eight months reading over and sifting through the reams of information collected through Russell Williams' meticulous cataloguing of his crimes. Burgess said it was important to put a substantial amount of information on the record.

The life imprisonment sentence may have been secured by Russell Williams' confession, but 25 years down the line, when Russell Williams is up for parole, the parole board will look at the record of evidence. And that is why they are carefully cataloguing his catalogue and his crimes. So whenever he does apply for parole, be it 30 or 40 years later even, they will be able to assess the risk Williams poses to the community."

Very important for that reason. And in 40 years, some of us might be walking down the street with a cane, and see him, and, well, who could blame a senile old person for whatever might happen?

10:21 smithjoanna: Det asks #ColRW if there's any reason why Comeau would have referenced him in her writings.

10:22 smithjoanna: "If that's the case, I would be very surprised," RW says. [via Twitter]

10:23 smithjoanna: Det steps outside. Crown explains that meanwhile, police were testing his footwear. #ColRW has denied being in homes of 4 victims. [via Twitter]

10:24 smithjoanna: Detective will return now with impressions of RW footwear and of footprints from property. Crown asks judge to study his reaction. [via Twitter]

10:24 smithjoanna: "Every time I walk out of this room, there are issues that come up. And they're not issues that point away from you," Det says.

CBC:
Amber Hildebrandt reports: "Smyth asks Williams if he's done any off-road driving near Hwy 37. Williams says no. The officer then says, "Would it surprise you to know that when the CSI people were looking around Lloyd's property they found tire tracks looking like a vehicle left the road. They examined the tire tracks. Tire tracks are a major source of evidence for us. They identified those tires as the same tires from your Pathfinder.'"

10:23
CBC:
Amber Hildebrandt reports: "Williams asks, "Really?" Family members in court are heard gasping after hearing this. The officer asks about Comeau. 'Is there any reason at all - we're searching computers and BlackBerrys and looking through houses at diaries etc. - is there any reason at all that comeau would've referenced you in some of her writings?,' says Smyth. Williams says, 'Not at all.'"
