[h=1]Mary O’DONNELL – Case Overview[/h] It was just after midnight on July 28, 1988, when Mary O’Donnell left the A&W restaurant at Lakewood and East Hastings Street, heading for home. She would never arrive. Just a short while later, at 1:40 a.m., her body was discovered on the grounds of Templeton High School. She had been robbed and beaten to death.

Mary, who was sometimes called Marie, also used the names Patricia Marie Rafferty and Marie Patricia Janulus. She was often seen in the 2100 and 2200 hundred block of East Hastings – she was well known not just at the A&W, but at the Dairy Queen and Church’s Chicken.

Mary would usually walk south on Templeton Street from East Hastings, and through the schoolyard to her home in the 2100 block of Adanac Street. She sometimes liked to go to the Grand Union Pub at 74 West Hastings and the West Hotel at Carrall Street.
The petite 53-year-old had lived alone, since losing her husband of 14 years to a heart attack the year before, and she struggled with mental illness.
Someone preyed on one of our most vulnerable citizens that night – a woman who was living her life as best as she could, despite her struggles and challenges. She was just trying to get home and go to sleep. Help us catch a killer. It’s been 38 years now, but somebody out there knows something.

[h=1]Crime Stoppers Cold Case: Murder of Mary O’Donnell[/h]
O’Donnell was murdered, and after all these years her family still has no closure. Do you have any information? Police and Crime Stoppers are asking for your help.
She left the A&W restaurant at Lakewood and East Hastings Street just after midnight. O’Donnell was known to frequent that A&W and was well-known by staff.

Just a short while later, her body was found on the grounds of Templeton High School in East Vancouver.

Police say she was robbed and beaten to death.

O’Donnell would usually walk south on Templeton Street from East Hastings, and through the schoolyard to her home in the 2100-block of Adanac Street.

This feels very opportunistic. Being after midnight and in a high school location, makes me think gang related? It was after midnight, she was alone and an easy target. Looking at the blood that pooled at the crime scene, this was pretty quickly done. She was mentally ill and petite, which means almost anyone could have gotten the best of her very quickly. Try to snatch her purse, she pulls away and boom, beaten. Makes you wonder if they have any DNA evidence that could be re-examined?

Why did they have to kill her?!
It would not be hard to just steal what they wanted and then leave the poor woman alone, hoping that with some time and maybe distance, someone will finally speak up.

My personal guess? If this was gang related ..she just walked into a bad scene. They want to rob her, but she pulls back and they don't tolerate defiance. So they beat her. She is 53 and petite, so it wouldn't take much to kill her. Of course someone knows something, they ALWAYS do.

Perhaps someone does know something sounds like a small town, hope after all this time this one gets solved.
