Pimentel was 24 years old when he and his friends went out to celebrate the New Year on Dec. 31, 2011 at a nightclub at Exhibition Place. He left the club sometime before 3 a.m. and was separated from his friends when he got into an altercation with a group of unknown people near East Liberty Street and Hanna Avenue. Pimentel was stabbed several times. He was rushed to hospital but didn’t survive his injuries".

"He is described as Caucasian in mid-twenties, five-foot-six to five-foot-ten, slim build and has a short haircut.

Investigators are urging the man, or anyone who knows his identity, to come forward and speak with police."

"Toronto Police Hope Serial's Popularity Will Help Solve 2011 Homicide"

"Pimentel was at a party with two other friends but the trio was separated as they were leaving. At some point, Pimentel ended up alone, got into a confrontation with an unknown man and woman, and was stabbed to death.

Earlier this month, Det. Tam Bui began posting clues from the case on Twitter in an effort to crowd source new information.

Using the hashtag #mikepimentelmurder, Bui has tweeted photos of the crime scene and an image of a woman police hope to identify so they can speak with her. He has also posted photos of three critical pieces of evidence: a hair extension, a high-heeled shoe and a set of keys with a distinctive key chain.

He tweets a new piece of evidence every Saturday, with a final clue expected on New Year's Eve.

"This could be a unique way of drawing information from the general public and more specifically people who were in Liberty Village on January 1, 2012," said Det. Jeff Tavares, who works with Bui in the homicide unit and has helped with the project."

    rbbm.

"The decision to post the suspect’s image on New Year’s Eve is not just about marking the third anniversary of the crime. Det. Tavares pointed out that people come in to the city from all over Southern Ontario and even across the country to celebrate, and the publicity is intended to reach the same kind of broad audience.

“It’s quite possible this couple or an individual has come in from somewhere else,” added Det. Bui, who declined to comment on whether investigators obtained useful DNA samples from the hair extension.

While Mr. Pimentel was murdered three years ago, the investigation was active until last summer, when Det. Bui’s team “exhausted a number of leads.” Working with the Toronto Police Service’s corporate communications and social media strategists, Det. Bui decided to aim for a media blitz for New Year’s.

He also solicited advice from Twitter Canada executives about social media tactics. The tweets have featured photos, hashtags and leading questions. “Chris last saw Mike piggybacking a blond woman north on Dufferin from this bridge,” according to one. “Who is she, what did she see?”

Det. Bui, who is a devoted Serial fan as well as a voracious reader of detective novels, even tweeted the Scottish crime writer Ian Rankin for thoughts on what his fictionalized gumshoe, Detective Inspector John Rebus, might do. “Hmm,” replied the best-selling author. “I have mixed feelings. Might be a lot of dreck to sift through. On the other hand, last chance saloon.”

The photos are of him fuzzy and not that useful perhaps except for somebody who know him

But the picture of the woman (!) could you get anyone more idiosyncratic looking? She is an excellent clue somebody will recognize her.

It would appear that he got into a scrap with someone over something very insignificant. A huge impediment to a case like this is the fact that there is no link between offender/victim.

It appears that he was actively socializing with the crowd wandering about in the area, and that got him into trouble.

There have been vicious assaults that have made the news in recent years. The two above stand out. I should have posted this in the Toronto Crimes Forum, but put them here as they are examples of how tough it is to solve cases like these. Both of these cases are unsolved, to my knowledge, so I thought it was worth giving them a glance. It is pure luck that these aggravated assaults didn't turn into homicides.

You get dark streets, and altercations that happen in either isolated areas, or just a badly, in crowds, where the perpetrators tend to melt away. It is a lose/lose situation for victims and police, who cannot find a link between offender and victim.

There is a subculture of wannabe tough guys and people who think they are mma fighters, or knife-fighters etc., and are protected by their equally stupid friends. This was likely the situation in the Pimentel case, as well as the two cases above. The two I found come with video footage. Watch and see how easily this stuff escalates.

Edit. The video doesn't work in the Globe and Mail story. Maybe it can be found elsewhere online. Sorry about that.

Poirer is being held in custody.

Police made the arrest after using social media to share clues in the case with a global audience."
