I feel the same way you do about releasing info about RMcD's children.

The link to the CBC News article contains a video which was filmed in the Co-op Store where Nancy worked. The unnamed middle-aged woman who spoke is possibly Nancy’s mother.

RMcD was located at a campsite near Dead Man's Flat at about 7:15 p.m. MT on Thursday, Canmore RCMP stated in a news release after the truck was found earlier that day; however this article confirms people had reported seeing McDiarmid camping near Dead Man's Flat, a small hamlet east of Canmore, as early as Monday, Cpl. Darleen White told CBC News prior to his arrest.

"I'm glad they caught him," Gladys Swenty, Nancy's mother, said when CBC News informed her of McDiarmid's arrest.

She said it was "a little scary" when McDiarmid was on the lam because there were rumours and fears circulating around Fisher Branch that he might still be in the community.

When asked if she was hoping or praying McDiarmid would be caught, Swenty replied, "I don't pray. I stopped praying after my daughter went missing. "I've been crying for the last 50 days," she said. "If there's one person who didn't deserve it, it was her [Nancy]."

It further states RMcD was taken into custody without incident and will be escorted back to Manitoba but whether he is in Winnipeg is uncertain because there is nothing in the media to confirm McDiarmid is here. It is highly doubtful RMcD was released on a promise to appear but his name does not show up in any hearings in any Manitoba Courts. It is possible the preliminaries were handled outside of the Winnipeg Courts and the records have not been updated. A local journalist said he wasn’t even aware RMcD was brought back to Manitoba three days earlier yet this article says he was.

Killer pleads guilty, sentenced for 2011 murder of Nancy Swenty

Nancy Swenty was 33 when she was killed by Russell McDiarmid in 2011.

WINNIPEG – June 2013 - Russell McDiarmid has been sentenced to life in prison for a murder that shook the town of Fisher Branch, Manitoba.

McDiarmid, 53, pleaded guilty Monday to killing Nancy Swenty, 33, in Fisher Branch on July 27, 2011. The judge gave him no chance of parole for 10 years, the minimum for second-degree murder.

McDiarmid, whose ex-girlfriend was a friend of Swenty, went to her house July 27, got in an argument with her and strangled her, court was told.

He put her body in her truck, drove to a hunting shack and broke into it, found a tarp and wrapped her in it before tossing her body in a ditch.

The motive for the murder is still unclear.

Swenty was reported missing after she didn’t show up to work the next day.

For a month, family, friends and volunteers searched for her.

She was found on Aug. 28, 2011, her body badly decomposed.

McDiarmid was seen by friends with a bite mark on his chest and scratches on his face, court was told.

McDiarmid was questioned by police after Swenty disappeared but subsequently left the province. A warrant for his arrest was issued after her body was found and police caught him in Canmore, Alta., on Sept. 15, 2011.

McDiarmid declined to speak in court.

Russell Gordon McDiarmid gets life in prison for murder of Fisher Branch woman Nancy Swenty

June 10, 2013 - A Fisher Branch man has been sentenced to life in prison for a senseless killing that still remains shrouded in mystery.

Russell Gordon McDiarmid pleaded guilty to second-degree murder Monday for the July 2011 killing of 31-year-old Nancy Swenty.

“It really was an incomprehensible killing,” said Justice Brenda Keyser. “There doesn’t seem to be any real explanation for how someone could lose control to that extent and kill someone.”

Court heard McDiarmid had just broken up with his common-law wife, Swenty’s friend, when he visited Swenty at her home north of town. After talking for a time, McDiarmid “in a fit of rage” attacked Swenty and strangled her to death, said Crown attorney Brian Bell.

McDiarmid wrapped Swenty’s body in a tarpaulin and abandoned it 30 km south of Fisher Branch.

“This was an awful, heinous and unnecessary murder,” Bell said. “There is no rhyme or reason known to the Crown.”

Police discovered Swenty’s badly decomposed body on Aug. 28, 2011.

Police questioned McDiarmid following Swenty’s disappearance but did not arrest him until Sept. 15 when he was found hiding in Canmore, Alta.

Swenty was described as an animal lover and devoted daughter who had coffee with her mother every morning before work.

“My heart has been smashed so bad it will never mend,” mother Gladys Swenty wrote in a victim impact statement read out in court. “She was my life.”

McDiarmid offered no explanation for the killing. Defence lawyer Len Tailleur said McDiarmid is bipolar and only now being properly medicated.

“This has been a life-long issue for him,” Tailleur said.

McDiarmid has a criminal record of 25 convictions spanning 30 years. Keyser agreed to a joint recommendation McDiarmid be eligible for parole after serving 10 years of his sentence.

“It may be that Mr. McDiarmid is never released,” she said. “It will be up to him to satisfy the parole board that he is a safe person to be released into the community.”
