More than 1,000 police officers joined forces Thursday morning to execute dozens of search warrants across Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia.
The operation began just before 6 a.m. ET as scores of officers with the Surete Du Quebec (SQ), the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and regional police forces began sweeping into various locations.
Details are scarce, but Sgt. Daniel Thibaudeau of the SQ, which is leading the operation, confirmed that officers are targeting an organized crime network.
Initial reports indicate the network is involved in drug trafficking, mainly cocaine.
A backlog of police vans and squad cars were visible outside Montreal police headquarters early Thursday.
The raids are believed to be the largest police operation Quebec has seen since 2009, when officers carried out a sweep that targeted the Hells Angels motorcycle club, CTVs Montreal Bureau Chief Genevieve Beauchemin told Canada AM on Thursday.
Police said 156 people were arrested during Operation SharQc, an acronym for Strategy Hells Angels Region of Quebec. Like Thursdays raids, the SQ worked in conjunction with the RCMP.
Investigators are expected to share more details about the sweep at a 2 p.m. news conference in Montreal.
