I didn't see a thread on this. How extremely terrifying!!!!!!!!!

She was online chatting with her boyfriend who witnessed her murder via webcam. :-(

Bless his heart, trying to do what he could from China!!!!

am I right in understanding that the roommates are saying they know who the stalker was?(an ex roommate) I hope the police are seriously seeking out that lead.

How horrible for this poor girl and her family. As a former exchange student, this one really shakes me.

It sounds like her friends know who the stalker is and it won't be long before they catch him. How utterly horrifying. Her boyfriend in China will be traumatized for life. I wonder if she felt safe opening the door simply because she was on webcam with her boyfriend ... otherwise it doesn't make sense that she would open the door to someone who was stalking her.

The first comment by Deborah, London, U.K., 19/4/2011 23:32 gives a better explanation for the delay by police.

The boyfriend saw what was happening, and began using social media to leave messages for the Toronto friends. Those friends were asleep as it was the middle of the night in Toronto. When they got up they saw the message and went to check on her.

My guess would be that he was let into the house by someone else(or had a key, since it says in th article that her stalker was an old housemate)

She wouldn't have a peephole on her bedroom dooor. I imagine if I had a house full of housemates, and someone was knocking on my bedroom door, I would think it was one of them, not an outside guest, at 1AM.

Police charge Brian Dickson with first degree murder. "Police have asked the media to not publish photos of the suspect because it could compromise the investigation." I have never heard of this type of request but I guess the media will have to comply. Apparently, the autopsy was inconclusive and they are awaiting toxicology tests. There was talk in the media (rumor?) that she could have been given a lethal injection. I'm pretty sure the suspect is the guy that was "stalking" her according to her friends. RIP Qian.

Apparently he's scheduled to be in court tomorrow at 10 am.

It says he was "known to police"... Wonder if he's done this before, & the webcam caught him this time...

You know, the media never ceases to amaze me.

If the police didn't want his pic published why in the world would anyone violate that requirement just to be the 1st one to come out with it!?

Seems like her parents could sue them if it might compromise the investigation....

Were there any other attacks on women going on in the area?

He was charged with sexual assault in Jan 2006 and the charges were withdrawn in April. I wonder if this is how he is "known to police?" I'm very worried that there could be other stuff too. He has filled his itinerary with clubs and organizations to look good, IMO.

"In January 2006, Dickson faced a sexual assault charge, which was withdrawn in April. Although they did not know about the charge, friends said they noticed a change in him."

Ms. Liu, who also went by the name “Necole,” attended Beijing City College and came to Canada last fall, planning to earn a master’s degree in media. She took English courses at York. In January, she moved into the basement of a house on Aldwinckle Heights south of the school.

She was chatting with her boyfriend, Meng Xiaochao, on a webcam at 1 a.m. Friday, when she let someone she seemed to know into her room. The man tried to hug her, Mr. Meng said, the two struggled and the assailant shut her laptop. In Beijing Thursday, Mr. Meng expressed relief at the arrest."

His picture is on Facebook on his profile and very easy for anyone to find, I saw it before I saw that article.
Slightly OT, but only a few weeks ago, another female Chinese student was murdered by a "spurned lover" at a university in Sweden...

    ARGH!!! Not again!

"Lawyer Steven Krys, who is representing 29-year-old Brian Dickson, said there is much “confusion” surrounding what actually happened to the victim, Qian Liu, who was found dead a week ago. Police have not yet determined the cause of death and there were no obvious signs of trauma, but Mr. Dickson was charged with first-degree murder days after Ms. Liu died."
