The whole document is worth reading, but you might start at pg 309 if you are specifically looking for historical attitudes toward residential schools. It's one of the most thorough documents, but there certainly are others.

The graves, potential graves of children now exceed 1,000. Children.

The names of those that need to do something now are important imo. They wanted the job, the perks, the prestige or whatever it is that goes with the current appointment.

Minister of Indigenous Services - currently Marc Miller (since 20 Nov 2019) I'm not on twitter or any other social media sight, but cannot find any current statement(s) from him on this matter in msm.

Prime Minister of Canada - currently Justin Trudeau

The buck has to stop with these guys and they need to start speaking - today. Names of those that let this happen, at the time, need to be recorded. They wanted the job after all and received taxpayer $$ to carry out whatever it is they carried out.

Let's not give them another place to hide.

More than 160 unmarked graves found at former Kuper Island Industrial School: First Nation
''The federal government took over the administration of the school in 1969 before closing the institution in 1975.

There has been a series of recent discoveries using ground-penetrating radar of what are believed to be the remains of hundreds of children in unmarked graves at former residential schools.''

''The ground-penetrating radar doesn’t find actual bodies but grave shafts, as well as changes in the soil, Simons said.

The school was demolished in the 1980s and Simons said that has been a challenge for both researchers and the community.

“Where it once stood is the core or centre of the main Penelakut town, so people live around that space,” Simons said.''

About two acres were scanned at the apple orchard located near the residential school. This location was chosen based on survivors’ reports and the finding of a juvenile rib bone and tooth in the soil during another dig, Beaulieu said.

More than 160 acres still require surveying.

“There are very likely to be a number of human burials in the area,” Beaulieu said. “This investigation has barely scratched the surface.”

I've followed along without commenting until this post. Everyone is aware that world wars, epidemics, poverty and a global depression affected everyone during this time period.

I walked through my village cemetery a couple of years ago to see the sheer impact the Spanish flu had on the population. Whole families wiped out within weeks. And in a village of 1000 people on Remembrance Day the number of flags that identified veterans of two world wars as well as the Korean War.

The point is, I could view those deaths because they have all been acknowledged with death certificates. They were known and their deaths acknowledged by family and friends. A place of remembrance marked their passing with loving tributes.

Where is the acknowledgement of these deaths? Who advised the families that their children had died? Were they even told that their children were no longer alive? They weren't acknowledged because they were deemed nothing more than a failure of the plan to "beat the Indian out of them". Please don't suggest that there is a rational reason for rubbing out of the existence of these children, regardless how they died.

John A MacDonald, Canada's first Prime Minister made this statement when he introduced the Indian Residential Schools and the rationale behind their locations. “When the school is on the reserve, the child lives with his parents who are savages; he is surrounded by savages … He is simply a savage who can read and write,” Macdonald told the House of Commons.

Canada's Food Guides were created by experimenting on Indigenous kids in these residential schools. Why them? Because they were expendable.

One of WS recently identified John Doe's 'Septic Sam' has been identified as a FN individual who along with his brother and sister were part of the 60s Scoop. He entered the residential school system after the experiments ended but his autopsy still showed he had evidence of malnutrition. While you and I may have been listening to the Beach boys or the Beatles these kids were removed from their homes without ever having contact with their parents for years. And many never returned home.

It's disingenuous to suggest there are rational reasons why these children have no names. There is nothing rational about systemic racism.

“A group of Halifax-based nuns that operated the Shubenacadie Residential School in Nova Scotia has apologized for its role at the institute, but is refusing to say more about the gesture or whether it's reached out to Indigenous survivors.

The Sisters of Charity staffed the school for its duration from 1929 to 1967. It was named a National Historic Site in 2020 to mark the "discrimination, mistreatment, abuse and neglect" Mi'kmaw children suffered after being forced to attend the school.

Survivors have told of widespread physical, sexual and psychological abuse.

On Monday, the religious order posted an apology to its website:

"The recovery of the unmarked graves at former Canadian residential schools is a stark reminder of the most vulnerable and enslaved in our nations. We hear the cries of hidden children, women, and men. Our breath is laboured as we begin to understand the harm inflicted on the innocent," ”

Officially 16 children died at the school, but Indigenous groups believe the number is much higher. According to survivors ‘the nuns ran the show’, and were very much a part of what went on it the school.

The nuns kept daily records. They allowed access to them in the 1990’s, but since then have not shared them. The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation said it will upload its copy of the archives this year.

Support is available for anyone affected by their experience at residential schools, and those who are triggered by these reports.

A national Indian Residential School Crisis Line has been set up to provide support for residential school survivors and others affected. People can access emotional and crisis referral services by calling the 24-hour national crisis line: 1-866-925-4419.

The Lac La Ronge Indian Band has become the latest First Nation in Saskatchewan to begin searching for unmarked graves associated with a local residential school site.

The band launched its search efforts on Saturday using ground-penetrating radar equipment at an old cemetery site west of downtown La Ronge, Sask., located approximately 375 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon.

The work in La Ronge will take time. Only 30 per cent of the cemetery site was explored on the weekend, with elders and other band members sometimes taking the reins of the equipment.

The remaining 70 per cent of the cemetery still needs to be combed, Cook-Searson said.

"And then we also have to do the outside of the cemetery, in the surrounding area, where elders have said that there's a mass grave here … you know, just from oral history and time passing down information," she said.
 
According to the CBC and National Post, the Prime Minister is surfing in Tofino on a family holiday.

His official diary said he had private meetings in Ottawa on this first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

His office did update it and confirmed that he was in Tofino, surfing.

ETA: at approx. 7:30pm P. M. Trudeaus’ Twitter account says he spent some time speaking with survivors today.
