Canada - Sentry killed in War Memorial shooting, Ottawa, 22 Oct 2014

I was so busy following the ridiculousness in Ferguson, I wasn't even paying attention to what was going on in my OWN country! :(

Prayers for all involved. :rose:

There are conflicting reports regarding one of the soldiers being dead. CBC (on my TV) retracted that info because they were confusing it with the soldier from the other day.

Not sure what is true or not. Flipping through the channels to find confirmation.

This is WAY too close to home. :(

#BREAKING Minister of Employment Jason Kenney confirms the soldier shot in Ottawa is dead http://on.thestar.com/1nz5osN

edit: it appears some news stations are issueing retractions, so it may be false. i really hope hes okay..

Might be some confusion because they just announced that the shooter had died around the same time he tweeted his condolences. Also some confusion regarding the soldier who did die on Tuesday in the Quebec incident. He succumbed to his injuries the day after that attack so there is probably a lot of confusion regarding two separate incidents.

MOO

"Police identified three crime scenes – the War Memorial, Centre Block and finally the Rideau Centre mall, located kitty corner from the Chateau Laurier.

Gunfire was still being exchanged in the Rideau Centre by noon, as police warned at least one gunman was still at large.

Blocks in every direction were evacuated or put on lockdown.

I've never trembled so much going on-air. Will continue bringing you updates on the #OttawaShooting

On CNN they are implying these are ISIS attacks? Are they jumping to conclusions or is this the future we all feared?

It follows this very recent event..(bbm)

"Prime Minister Stephen Harper was safely taken away from Parliament Hill, his spokesman said.

His events for the day were cancelled, including bestowing Canadian citizenship on rights activist and Nobel Prize winner Malala Yousafzai.

The offices of NDP Leader Tom Mulcair and Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau told media the opposition leaders were also both safe and at undisclosed locations.

The shooting comes just two days after a newly converted jihadist ran down two soldiers in his car in a Montreal parking lot, killing one.

I have been following live coverage on an Ottawa news station:

Click on the 'listen now' link on the website. Lots of local details not being covered on CNN etc.

Ok, I was trying to find out why everyone was already pointing fingers. I guess it isn't a big stretch to point to ISIS then. This is scary.

Was anyone else shot except for at Parliment and War Memorial? How do they know there was/ is a shooting at Rideau Center? Did that shooter hit anyone? If shots were actually fired did the shooter just not hit anyone or was it police shooting at the perp? This part is very confusing.

Speculation at this point, as scene is apparently chaotic..imo.

There is supposed to be a presser "within the hour" from RCMP. Not sure when or where.

Also, PM Harper will speak sometime later.

Canadian cabinet minister Jason Kenney says "Canada will not be terrorised or intimidated" following #OttawaShooting

I notice in really fast breaking events there are loads and loads of false reports. I do not think they are lies necessarily but that locals are very nervous and anything that could be slightly mistaken for something threatening, they call in and report. The thing at the mall and the thing at the high school I am HOPEFUL are just hysterical mistakes. :please:

Here's Daily Mail, per usual stacking one account atop the next and generally tabloiding it up ("Arabic scarf"):

Canadian Parliament under lockdown after gunmen 'shot soldier standing
guard at the National War Memorial before opening fire in the Parliament halls'

‣ A reserve soldier in his 30s was shot in the abdomen at the National War Memorial in Ottawa shortly before 10am on Wednesday
‣ Dozens of shots were then heard inside Parliament and shots were also reported at a third site, the Rideau Centre mall
‣ The Parliament's Sergeant-at-Arms shot one of the gunmen dead
‣ Witness accounts of a suspect include descriptions of him as short with long hair, overweight, wearing a dark jacket and 'Arabic scarf'
‣ Residents of the city have been warned to stay inside and away from windows as authorities swarm downtown in the search of the gunmen
