    50 years ago - 1966 August 12 - Harry Roberts, John Duddy and John Witney, members a car theft ring, are pulled over by British policemen Christopher Head, David Wombwell and Geoffrey Fox. Roberts and Duddy then gun down all three officers. The criminals were all eventually captured, convicted of the murders and given long prison terms. Duddy died incarcerated in 1981 while Witney was released in 1991 then beaten to death by his flatmate in 1999. Roberts, the sole survivor, was finally paroled in 2014.

    50 years ago - 1966 August 14 - Ten-year-old Jane Taylor goes out for a bicycle ride in Mobberly, England and is never seen again. It is suspected that she was a victim of serial child killer Raymond Morris who was convicted of another murder and sent to prison for life.

    150 years ago - 1866 August 17 - New York City gang leader Bernard Friery is hanged after being convicted of murdering bar owner Henry Lazarus with a stab to the throat.

    100 years ago - 1916 August 19 - Celestine Buisson vanishes after leaving to meet Henri Landru. She is believed to be the eighth of, at least, 11 victims of the Frenchman whose ploy was to seduce lonely older women then murder them after gaining control of their insurance and assets. He was finally beheaded on the guillotine in 1922. It was a query by Celestine's sister that led to the serial killer's eventual arrest.

    50 years ago - 1966 August 27 - Frank Biggs dies mysteriously after admission to New Jersey's Riverdell Hospital with a suspected ulcer. This admittee was the sixth of at least 9 noncritical patients to expire unexpectedly there in an eleven month period. Dr. Mario Jascalevich was eventually charged with killing some of the nine with curare but he was eventually acquitted, leaving the cases unsolved. The doctor went back to his native Argentina after the trial and died there during 1984.

    50 years ago - 1966 August 29 - After being tried in Egypt, Sayyid Qutb is hanged. He had been charged with plotting to assassinate President Gamal Abdel Nasser and overthrow his government.

    50 years ago - 1966 August 29 - Marvin Gibbs, 13, dies in Georgia hospital. He has been poisoned by his mother Janie Lou Gibbs but this will not be discovered until she also murders her husband, two other sons and a grandson. The serial killer will eventually be put on trial, convicted and sentenced to five consecutive life terms.

    50 years ago - 1966 September 1 - Eighty-year-old Mary Muentener dies mysteriously after admission to New Jersey's Riverdell Hospital for gallbladder surgery. This admittee was the seventh of at least 9 noncritical patients to expire unexpectedly there in an eleven month period.     50 years ago - 1966 September 3 - Julia Beckwith, 6, of Milwaukee is raped stabbed and strangled. She is the first young lady murdered by serial killer Michael Lee Herrington. In the following year, Herrington will be convicted of this and another murder and sent to prison for two consecutive life terms

    50 years ago - 1966 September 6 - South African Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd is stabbed to death as he enters the House of Assembly in Cape Town. The assassin, Dimitri Tsafendas was ordered held for life due to insanity and died in 1999 while still confined.

    100 years ago - 1916 September 7 - Nicholas Morello, head of his namesake New York crime family, is gunned down in a Brooklyn street along with his bodyguard Charles Ubriaco. The hit was ordered by the head of another namesake crime family, Pellegrino Morano, and carried out by his men. Morano and all but one the men involved were convicted and sent to prison for terms ranging from six years to life. One man, Antonio Parretti fled the country but returned in 1926, at which point he was arrested, tried and sent to the electric chair in 1927.

    50 years ago - 1966 September 10 - After visiting a London club frequented by servicemen, Jeremiah Murphy, 44, is found stabbed to death. No motive could be determined for the unsolved murder of this homeless Irishman.

    50 years ago - 1966 September 10 - In Iowa, student Norma Jean Horgen, 18, vanishes. Later in the day, her body was found floating in Clear Lake. A male student was charged with her murder many years later but the case against him was dismissed due to insufficient evidence. The case remains unsolved.

    50 years ago - 1966 September 13 - Ursula Rohling, 20, is raped and strangled in a German park. Her boyfriend is accused and commits suicide as a result. It will later be determined that her murderer was actually serial killer Joachim Kroll. He continued to murder for ten more years until the plumbing in his apartment building was found to be clogged with the remains of a small child. Kroll went to prison for life and died there in 1991.

    50 years ago - 1966 September 18 - In North Carolina, Parker Kiser dies of what was originally thought to be a heart attack but it was later determined that he was likely arsenic poisoned by his daughter Blanche Taylor Moore. She went on to murder several more victims but was finally discovered and sentenced to execution in 1991. The serial killer now resides on death row.

    50 years ago - 1966 September 18 - Twenty-one-year-old Valerie Percy, the daughter of U. S. Senatorial candidate Charles Percy, is beaten and stabbed to death in her bedroom of the family's Kenilworth, Illinois home. Her stepmother reported that she was awakened by a noise and saw a dark haired man rush out of Valerie's room. Charles Percy won the election but the murder was never solved.

    50 years ago - 1966 September 23 - Seventy-year-old Emma Arzt dies mysteriously after admission to New Jersey's Riverdell Hospital with gallbladder issues.     50 years ago - 1966 September 27 - Jerry and Linda Bricca along with their four-year-old daughter Debbie are found stabbed to death in their suburban Cincinnati home. No one survived and the murders remain unsloved.

    100 years ago - 1916 October 4 - Soldier Bella Kiss flees a WWI combat hospital in Serbia after he gets word that police are closing in. He exchanged papers with another mortally wounded soldier in an attempt to fake his own death but it didn't work. While searching for fuel, authorities had discovered seven women pickled in oil drums at his house in Czinkota, (Austria-) Hungary. Upon further investigation, they also found sixteen other women and a man buried on the property. One of the women was his wife and the single male murder victim was believed to be her lover. Although Kiss was reportedly sighted on three continents over the next two decades, the serial killer was never apprehended.

    150 years ago - 1866 October 5 - After being convicted of four murders, Richard Burgess is executed in New Zealand. Before he was hanged, Burgess also boasted of committing an additional five murders.

    50 years ago - 1966 October 11 - Fifty-one-year-old Alice Hochhausler is beaten, raped and strangled in her home. She is assumed to be a victim of Posteal Laskey, aka the Cincinnati Strangler. The serial killer was found guilty of a similar murder and sent to prison where he died in 2007.

    50 years ago - 1966 October 16 - Arland Withrow, 17, is strangled by Ralph Nuss who then had sex with the corpse and threw the body in a Michigan river. Nuss, who was believed to have killed at least two other men for the same purpose, was eventally captured and sent to prison for life.

    50 years ago - 1966 October 16 - Eighteen-year-old Sherryl Thompson is stabbed 22 times and murdered by serial killer Michael Lee Herrington. The criminal was believed responsible for at least two other murders of young females and wound up going to prison for life.

    50 years ago - 1966 October 20 - Eighty-one-year-old Rose Winstsel is beaten and strangled. She is assumed to be a victim of Posteal Laskey, aka the Cincinnati Strangler. The serial killer was found guilty of murder and sent to prison where he died in 2007.
