I realize this is a little premature, but we have to face the facts; there is a possibility that this guy is a serial killer. He definitely abducted a hitchhiker in 2007 and is considered the prime suspect in two other murders.

RENO, Nev. — An Arizona auto dealer charged with killing a California woman in northern Nevada 40 years ago may have killed other women in the late 1970s, Nevada's attorney general said.

"All evidence points to defendant being a serial killer," state Attorney General Aaron Ford said in a court filing submitted ahead of Charles Gary Sullivan's arraignment Tuesday in Reno in the 1979 bludgeoning death of 20-year-old Julia Woodward.

Sullivan, 73, pleaded not guilty and is being held without bail.

However, no evidence was described in court and Sullivan's attorney, David Houston, said in an interview he doesn't believe DNA evidence that was presented to a grand jury ties Sullivan to Woodward's killing.

"Even if DNA shows he had contact with her, where is the act of murder proved?" Houston asked.

Houston and Sullivan didn't challenge a no-bail order, and a judge set another hearing for Jan. 30.

Ford said on the courthouse steps in Reno that the long-unsolved cases remain open.

"Evidence may have gone cold, but our tears have never run dry and our quest for justice never ends," he said.

In the court filing, Ford and prosecutors called Sullivan a suspect in the killing of Jennie Smith, a 17-year-old waitress at a Reno hotel-casino whose body was found in November 1979, and the unsolved disappearance of Linda Taylor, 23, in March 1979.

Sullivan was identified as a person of interest after Smith was reported missing in March 1978. Investigators said she told a friend she was going to buy cocaine from a man named Chuck.

Police determined that Smith and Sullivan knew each other, but Sullivan was not arrested and later moved out of Nevada.

In Taylor's case, prosecutors say a tip led investigators to Sullivan, who admitted dating Taylor but denied knowing what happened to her. The woman's body was never found.

Smith's skeletal remains were discovered in November 1979 off a remote hiking and biking trail outside Reno, not far from where Woodward's bludgeoned body was found in March 1979.

Woodward, of San Rafael, California, had been last seen by a friend a month earlier at San Francisco International Airport, where she planned to board a flight to the Reno and Lake Tahoe area, authorities said.

Prosecutors said it appeared both Smith and Woodward had their eyes bandaged, their underwear and identification stolen, and were left wearing one shoe.

Prosecutors say DNA evidence found on Woodward's clothing led to Sullivan, who was convicted of a 2007 sex attack in California.

Houston, the defense attorney, said earlier DNA tests were inconclusive.

Sullivan was arrested Aug. 28 in Prescott, Arizona.

In 2007 he was living in Pollock Pines, CA. He has also lived in
- Reno, NV (where Julia Woodard and Jennie Smith were killed)
- Blythe, CA (either moved there in 2007 or 2011; the details were a little difficult to read)
- Payson, AZ (where he was arrested)
- Possibly Sacramento, Phoenix, near Eureka, CA, Washington State and Idaho; however, I am NOT 100% certain. It was definitely someone with that name who had lived in Pollock Pines and Payson at the right times, but I chose not to add the link I found this at just in case.

Even so, I wanted to suggest crimes he may have been involved in, mainly at the Nevada/California border, where he was active in 1979.

- Donna Lass, 25, South Lake Tahoe, CA, 1970 (missing) The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs)

Of course this man has not had a trial yet but I think you may be onto something. Here is another report about the case:

Charles Gary Sullivan is arrested on single murder count, amid fears he is a serial killer | Daily Mail Online

I read that he lived in Vallejo, CA. I am unsure of when, however. As well as Scottsdale and West Mesa in Arizona. (I read this on a forum re. the Zodiac, but I don't think it is him, by the way) Although West Mesa did get me thinking...

Charles Gary Sullivan's attorney, David Houston, said Monday that DNA from a stain on Julia Woodward's clothing might show Sullivan had contact with Woodward in 1979, but not that he killed her.

Houston said Sullivan's murder charge should be thrown out because prosecutors failed to tell a grand jury that DNA showed Woodward had sex with other people, and they improperly compared the crime with Sullivan's conviction in an unrelated 2007 sex attack in California.

"Even if you believe the DNA evidence, DNA says (Woodward) had sex with other people," Houston told The Associated Press. "Why aren't they looking for those people?"

Sullivan has not been charged in the Smith or Taylor cases. He's due for another court hearing Jan. 30 in the Woodward case.

Houston said Sullivan wasn't given proper notice of the Washoe County District Court grand jury proceedings, and DNA from Woodward's clothes only showed that Sullivan had contact with Woodward "at one time."

"Association is not enough to prove murder," the defense attorney said.

That doesn't quite make sense. Sure, the victim may have had sex with other people, but this guy is a known sex offender (and he supposedly knew Linda Taylor). Is he still a prime suspect?

Sullivan may have been living in North Dakota around 1981 and may be linked to the disappearance of Barbara Louise Cotton. He also may have ties to Montana around the same period.

Other Jane Does found in the Sierra Nevada's around the time that Sullivan was living in Reno from around 1978-1979.

Emigrant Gap Jane Doe - NamUs #UP6296 (found on December 17th, 1977, estimated death few days prior).
Placer County Jane Doe - NamUs #UP17572 (found October 30, 1980, estimated death 1979).

Forest Hill Jane Doe - NamUs #UP6321 (found on August 6th, 1985, estimated death 1981-1983)

Jane Doe's from around when Sullivan was living in Pollack Pines, CA around 2007:

Nevada City Jane Doe - NamUs #UP17160 (found September 3rd, 2006, no estimated year of death listed). This doe was found around the same area where Sullivan allegedly tried to kidnap someone in 2007.

This body was found north of Reno. Little to no information on it yet though.

Pyramid Highway Jane Doe - NamUs #UP89100 (found in January of 2022, no estimated year of death listed).

There are an usually large number of other Doe's found in the area, but their PMI's don't quite match up so I didn't list them above. Many of them are concentrated in the Colfax/Forest Hill area, which is about an hour drive from Pollock Pines. It's towards the left side of the map.

I'm semi local to the area and was always wondering why there were so many Doe's in our region, especially from the late 1970's to the mid 1980's. The region isn't the most populace one. I wonder if Sullivan had a had something to do with these murders, as they were dumped in places that it seems only locals would be able to navigate well.

Last week investigators in Dawson County, Montana announced that they were closing the unsolved murder case of Dexter Stefonek, and identified Charles Gary Sullivan as a person of interest.

67 year old Stefonek disappeared from the Bad Route rest stop on I-94 near Glendive, where his vehicle was found ablaze on 19th November 1985.

Dexter had been returning home to Rhinelander, Wisconsin after visiting his son in Oregon. His body was found in March 1986 concealed at a remote private dumpsite approximately 18 miles from the rest stop.

Websleuths thread on Dexter Stefonek

While they lack enough evidence to bring charges, Dawson County investigators are certain that Dexter was killed by now 79 year old Sullivan.

Sullivan and his then vehicle matched descriptions given by 2 eyewitnesses who saw a suspect individual at the rest stop around the time of the crime.

When investigators from Montana attempted to question Sullivan about the murder of Stefonek he repeatedly invoked his 5th amendment rights.
