I'm really curious as to why LE was searching Middle Mountain Rd the next weekend after Dylan went missing. Anyone have any ideas? This is not the route Dylan would have walked to the lake or Bayfield and it appears to be a Forest Service road and a bit out of the way. Here is a map showing A) MR's house B) Middle Mountain Road

Is that where they were using the "unidentified scent dogs" according to that one report?

I think they really searched the whole Vallecito area quite thoroughly hoping to find Dylan.

Holey smokes!

ETA - I notice the bottom portion is close to Mushroom Lane, but we don't know if Mindy's clue during the search amounted to anything & that search was later.

isn't it possible that dylan was intentionally not getting up because he had a plan for the day and wanted his dad to leave without him? we're making a lot of assumptions about a kid's mind, and maybe he thought once his dad left he could make it to a friend's house, or otherwise do what he wanted without having to ask permission. as a kid i never "slept in" as well as i did on sunday morning hoping my parents wouldn't wake up for church. :twocents:

I can totally see this as a possibility. The thing that puzzles me about this scenario is that DR didn't "communicate" with anyone after dad had left. The lack of communication is what causes me to question this theory.

Calling TXJan - what was the exact date that the 9:37pm time was mentioned for the FIRST time by LE? And, what was the exact date that Mr. Redwine changed his story from Dylan was tired YADA YADA YADA --> Dylan was texting (or playing games while watching a movie YADA YADA YADA) until around 10:30pm-ish?

Here's what I have about the 9:37 text information:

@lynseypug I was told the last text sent from his cellphone was at 9:37 pm. It's the only electronic device investigators are talking about

I believe this is the information/date you are looking for re: MR stating they stayed up and watched the movie, etc.

Date: 2/4/13
Melissa Blasius Interview

Mark Redwine:
Well, there’s not a lot of cell phone service between Durango and the lake up here, and it’s not until you come up past the dam that you actually can get your cell phone service as a Verizon customer.

But, I specifically remember him texting about that time, and he was texting on the couch after we were here and watching the movie he was over there texting or playing a video or something. I just assumed he was texting, ‘cos it’s not like he can’t ever get service up here, it’s just very sporadic. You know, in one place he might be he can’t get service and then he could take a step to the left or a step to the right and voila all of a sudden he has service, and the two places he told me he could get service was from the corner of the couch where he was sitting, which has been changed, but right by the TV there, and my room.
Well, he didn’t go into my room. He went upstairs for a few things – brought the DVD player down so we could watch that movie that he wanted to watch.

Mark Redwine:
Well, we were watching the movie together. I remember the movie being finished. I at some point was pacing the floor and got up and was taking care of a few little things you know over here at the kitchen table while we were doing that but, you know, it was – Shortly after the ending of that movie, which my guess, and I don’t recall because I don’t keep track of the clock… you know…it must have been… I thought it was earlier in the beginning…’cos I was fairly tired anyway, and I know Dylan was tired because he indicated to me that because he had been up ‘till 4:00 the night before and that he had spent most of the day in the airport traveling to get here that he was tired, and, you know, it seems to me it had to been about 10:30’ish maybe by the time the movie got done… somewhere in there and, you know, shortly after that I ran up and went to bed and he finished up doin’ whatever he was doin’ watching Nickelodeon or whatever he was watching.

Why would not finding a body in the lake not give one comfort.

Can anyone here explain this to me. I would be breathing the biggest sigh of relief imaginable.

"Elaine Redwine doesn’t believe her son is a runaway because it wasn’t his nature and because he was happy at his new school in Colorado Springs where he entered eighth grade this fall.

“It’s no comfort that they didn’t find anything in the water today,” she said Monday.

Because IMO, it's the catch 22. If they had found Dylan in the lake, she would know where he was and can begin the grief process. Because he wasn't found in the lake, he is still missing and can be anywhere and in any condition. The unknown was still there, no comfort because you still don't know where your child is.

One of the only pieces of documented evidence we have in this case is text messages between Dylan and R making definitive, firm plans to meet at 6:30 am that morning. By 6:45 R is asking Dylan where he is. These plans were the firm expectation of these two boys. If he changed his mind we have no evidence of that and have to assume it happened without any evidence. JMO

Thanks for pointing this out. His friend was certainly alarmed when Dylan was 15 minutes late. Granted, not call the cops type alarm but I have always thought the contrast between R's reaction (texting to update Dylan of their whereabouts, texting to see where he is, texting to say his mom and dad are looking for him, then finally complete and total panic when he realizes no one has heard anything all day) and MR's reaction is telling. Of course, it is also heard to see the reaction to a missing person through the eyes and words of a 13 year old.

If these directions are correct, then it would be an out of the way, fairly private place to stop near the northeast corner of the lake.

Directions: From downtown Durango drive north on US 550 to 15th Street and turn right. Then after a short distance merge left onto Florida Road which becomes CR 240. After about 13 miles continue on CR 240 by turning right at the Lemon Reservoir intersection. After about 4 miles at the bottom of the hill turn left (north) on CR 501. Drive along the west side of the lake and continue around the north end to the northeast corner of the lake and turn left (north) on Middle Mountain Road (FR 724)

Also maybe Elaine was only thinking of finding something belonging to Dylan, some sort of clue as to where he is. It would be very disheartening to go through that day of searching and still not have any solid clues.

I have always wondered about Eileen Lake, off to the west of MR's home, up a trail about 1100 feet. Hiking sites say it closes in October, and is only accessible by foot and sometimes horseback. People try to fish there but the lake is covered in lillypads and no fish to be found really. It's only about a 2-4 mile hike round trip depending on the starting point.

It is closed to ATV's, but that doesn't mean a person couldn't break the rules. Months ago I asked if MR has a trail bike or ATV of some sort, and don't remember hearing an answer.

Has Eileen Lake been brought up on this forum, or by LE?

Hi Dee - can you link Mindy's clue for me? I think I missed that and I would love to see it.

Thanks!

IIRC MR does have an ATV. IIRC there was mention of him allowing Dylan to ride it on his own when Dylan was younger.

Me either. Could we have a link please?

Thanks!

Salem

I believe it stems from the protective orders news report/discussion. Elaie stating that MR let Dylan ride alone on the ATV even though he was too young (only 9 I believe?)- will check out those links for more info.

Also- the mushroom lane clue was referred to in the scanner thread during the Dec 8/9 search. Is it still in the parking lot?

Here's the only MSM information I can find about other lakes that were searched:

Tuesday afternoon, a helicopter from the San Juan County Sheriff’s office in New Mexico searched lakes in La Plata County. Those included Vallecito Reservoir, Lemon Reservoir, Haviland Lake, Lake Nighthorse and Electra Lake.

“We are just trying to be as thorough as possible and look as many places as we can for Dylan,” Bender said.

Maybe if Wendy K comes back with her dogs they can search there if they haven't already.

It is in the scanner thread towards the end of the day.

I am still searching earlier threads & came across Scorekeeper's post:

"All of the information received by the Task Force is being compiled by Task Force Crime Analysts for timeline development and future Task Force action strategies," said Lt. Ray Shupe, Public Information Officer for the task force.

"Regional law enforcement agencies, Colorado law enforcement agencies, as well as local, state, and federal law enforcement officers in other states around the U.S. have been assisting the Task Force in tip follow-ups."

Thank you rebeccaeee - I have read the protective order docs and don't remember the ATV discussion. If you find a link, that would be great. If not, I'll wait for aust amature sleuth to come back and see if they have a link handy. If not, that portion of the discussion will be removed.

I'll check out the scanner thread. Thanks for pointing me to the info!

Thanks for the info on the fly-over searches. Lake Eileen is fairly shallow and covered with grasses and lillypads, so my guess would be that even if they looked from a helicopter, any sightings would be nearly impossible. A canine search would be ideal imo. This is a hiking link showing how the lake is accessed, and toward the bottom a couple of good photos:
